One of my favorites. I love the way it starts off calm and then builds, builds, and then builds some more. The flute solo by Roi is phenomenal....especially at the live shows. They really jam this part out and Roi gets into a nice groove with Carter providing a funky beat. One of the band's best-lyrically and musically. One that you can listen to over and over and never get tired of.

This song succeeds best with evokin emotion from the listener. When TYPICAL SITUATION starts, its so calm, you can't help but feel at peace. It speeds up, but the first fast section doesn't ruin your calamity. Finally, once it gets fast the third time, it really makes you want to dance. The song brings you through the full spectrum of emotion, it makes you happy, it makes you peaceful, and it energizes you. But truly, this song is all about Leroi, the flute rules!

another amazing song by dmb. easy to get into.

............it's a damn good song!....

From the beginning of the some the craftmanship of the lyrics is superb. The countdown from ten is really neat. My favorite line in the song, "Why are you different, Why are you that way?" I get reminded of this everytime I meet someone weird of this line. It is also great how the song ends. The harmonics played together with the drums and bass gives it a great feel.

This is number 4 on my personal top 10 DMB songs list. I am always in a daze when I listen to this song. Isn't it based on a poem, or something? I know I read that somewhere. I also love the way that Dave inverts the sentence dealing with the eight ball. I think that might be my favorite line in the song. But, the rockin' part of the song is the chorus, I'm sure everyone would agree with me. I always have to get up and dance to that part. It's really a dangerous song
david wagner, dw001e@uhura.cc.rochester.edu
best versions of the song are long jam outs after the last verse followed by a brief segue into either minarets or blue water.
Kristen Sylva
At first, I didn't think it was as cool a song as others on the album, like Ants Marching, Satellite or Warehouse. But now, I can't get enough of the Band's songs in general, Typical Situation included!

One of my favorites!
Cari Haas, cmhaas@odin.cmp.ilstu.edu
I love this song. Not many people who have that CD like that song. It gives me many different emotions because it goes from a very mello beat to a lively tune. That song actually gets me in a good mood in the mourning. Good pick!
Jim Hanke, Raygun1029@aol.com
Not only is this one of the most beautiful DMB songs, its one of the most beautiful songs ever.
Melanie, mmattoon@worldnet.att.net
What a great song. I love the part where he says "We'll keep the big door open Everyone'll come around" - It's such a happy line so welcoming! But as usual with Dave's songs it has an underlying melancholy tone - "Why are you different Why are you that way If you don't get in line We'll lock you away" Conformity is what he's really talking about, not some big party.
Mary BethPollino
I love this song, but then again, I love every Dave Matthews Band song. It has great lyrics and a great rhythym.
Matias Nino, man95002@uconnvm.uconn.edu
This used to be my favorite song when I first got the album. I believe that live, it's a very different song. The jamming makes the song sound happier and LeRoi's sax lick is excellent in live versions. It appears that Typical Situation has come to replace Blue Water in the Minarets>>Blue Water medley which the band used to do so often. I prefer they do Blue Water but I guess they have dropped that song as a band. I really like the new lyrics which Dave sings at the beginning of the song. This is also a good solo song for Dave to play by himself.

typical situation is a great mellow song it works great for a dave solo encore

I love how it sounds sort of melancholy and pensive, but then cheers up a little. Great song.

This song is very powerful and actually means a lot to me. It is Dave's cry for equality, justice, and all that other shit the government promises us. We are denied are rights daily, but rather than fight it we lie back and let it rush over us like water. Hell, I myself do it. I respect Dave for taking a stand and using his medium to voice his opinion and try to stir up people. Not a formal revolution but rather an idividual. If you can reach at least one person, it is one more than you talked to before. Obviously, by this message, he has reached me. Hopefully I could say after you read this that I contributed. Much like Cry Freedom, he focuses on equality and the eternal struggle for racial equality. We often tend to punish or repremand the people who stray from the norm. Much like are generation...."generation X" What is that label all about? It was put on our generation by our parents in order to exploit us and inevitably make money off of us. How many comercials do you see which exploit rock climbing, mountain biking, rollerblading, or any other "extreme sport" shit. Well, I have been climbing for 3 years and mountain biking fro 5 years and this whole exploiting stuff pisses me off. Why can't we stop labeling "leave the big doors open, so everyone will come around." Well, I will now get off my podium and explain that music is a big part of my life and to take it lightly is not only an offense to the artist but also to yourself. We are not mindless fools, no matter what they label or tell us.
Denton Hartlein, DILLYHART@AOL.COM
I love the fact that it is based on a prayer. That is awesome the way Dave can just take something like a prayer and just go with it. EVen though its one of his older songs (recorded at Rutabega) I still think its one of his best
Scott King, kings@stu.beloit.edu
Typical Situation is an overall awesome song. Lyrically speaking, it is one of Dave's best, if not the best. Musically, I love how it starts out slow but then gains momentum until the end jam. I like it best when it's played after Minarets.
Joe Mullett, mullett@stcc.adm.@stcc.edu.ma.
Well, it was my first favorite song. When I first got UTTAD I originally was not very familiar with DMB. At first it was only Ants and WWYS, then as I got into the album, I became transfixed with the song. Whenever i was around friends i played it and they would always ask who this was because DMB was new up in W. Spfld, MA, but anyways i loved it and learned it on guitar. something about the first song you learn to play that really gets you, that and its pretty easy. aside from that, it always makes me feel like i'm on the beach, by myself alone, looking a at things and breaking them down to the simplist things, problems thoughts, ideas, reasons, wishes, and finding that even us complex humans come down to very little if not anything and all we are are energy, the same with everything around. so in essence, I love that song and will always, and to say that I practice Daveism would be blasphemy to the Cathlic religion, I do analize and appreciate the many things and thoughts that dave has to offer to himself and everyone around him, direct and indirect.

I don't really listen to Typical Situation that much. But, like all Dave songs, It's a rad song

I think this song is just wonderful! The first time I heard it about 2 years ago I just loved it. That is about all I have to say so thanks for listening.
Colin (Roller) Stanek, ps41843@navix.net
I think that songs great soft tune in the begining is perfect. The gradual bild up to the more exciting refrain makes for a well rounded perfect song.

It is an awesome song, and I think that it's a great pick for the "SONG OF THE WEEK". Infact it should be the song of the month (that's how much I love it).
Richard Rowan, rowanrp@mail.auburn.edu
Typical Situation shows the bands ability to break away frow the "rock band" stigma and prove that they can create a moving ballad. This song is one that really "speaks" to me when I listen to it actually pulling me away from a hectic world into one of harmonic dignity. Lyrically, this song can go head-to-head with any. I realize that Typical Situation is based on an actual poem, but the band is able to create poetry not only in the lyrics but in the harmonies as well.

a message about being yourself and accepting others that doesn't come off as cheesy is hard to find, but this song has one
