The windows desktop revloution has produced a three dimensional desktop. Click on the image to see my desktop running dimension.
Dimension is the world's first three dimensional desktop running using OpenGL. Those cubes rotate in 3d.
Litestep is another shell replacement for the windows desktop. It is entirely configureable.
Click on the the image to see my desktop running the litestep now distribution of litestep.
Since litestep is configureable there is also theme support. With a little bit of hacking you could make litestep look real sweet. Here is a litestep theme called blacklit2 that I tweaked with. Click on the picture for the full view of my desktop running a tweaked blacklit2 theme.
The Linux operating system allows desktop configuration as well.
Linux allows the user to pick window managers and desktop environments. The screen shot shows an enlightenment window manager theme called cyrus accompanied by a GTK theme of the same name. There is a transparent Eterm running. You can also see a shaded netscape session viewing this web page. The background is from propaganda. If you want some cool background images, I suggest you go there. I am also running the gnome desktop environment. Click on the small image to see a full screen view of my desktop.
BeOS is another operating system that you can use. The BeOS is a stable operating system that uses new technology to keep it running smoothly. It does not use old programming code as a base for its system (unlike the other operating systems out there), therefore it is up to date with today's hardware. It also is extremely fast, it takes me 10 seconds to boot up into BeOS.
The sawmill window manager allows desktop customization as well. Like enlightenment, sawmill allows the user to customize the appearance of window borders and function. It does however, not have all the features that enlightenment has because its aim is to be a window manager and not a complete desktop interface. The themes are gnome aware and change with the appropriate gtk theme if desired. If you are a gnome user, definitely look at sawmill, it is extremely fast and customizable, and an excellent accessory, or perhaps a requirement for gnome from my perspective. The screenshot shows sawmill running a theme called blue-steel, with a gtk theme called cyrus.
