Show goes on for 911

By Siva Darshan Ratnasingam

LEE Brennan, Spike Dawbarn and Jimmy Constable of 911 were disappointed with the turnout at their concert in Dewan Merdeka of Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur.

The hall was half filled, but this could have been because the concert took place on a Sunday night.

Still, the show went on. The host, MTV’s Ary Malik, introduced the opening acts: local rhythm and blues group Soulstreet and Danish trio Juice.

Soulstreet - comprising Zain Amri, Damian Seet, Farez Azlan and Allen Wong - sang Shout Out and This Is How We Do It and wooed the crowds with their vocals.

Juice - with Eve Home, Maria Jansen and Anne Rani - sang Not In Love and Best Days.

The two acts whetted the crowd’s appetite. So, when 911 appeared and started dancing to the beat of Bodyshakin’, the screams were deafening.

The group then performed incredible stunts during Bodyshakin’.

This was followed by the ballad How Do You Want Me To Love You, giving the group and audience a breather.

One part that got the audience excited was when Brennan sang "How do you want me to love you, Malaysia?"
As the hall wasn’t full, he invited those who were sitting to come down and dance on the dance floor. It was soon filled with people.

Many girls cried when Brennan sang the heart-rending If You’d Only Love Me. When Constable came out to sing his solo number, Reunited, the crowd didn’t go as wild as they did with Brennan.

However, he winked and responded to the screams of the crowd by saying "Oh, stop it! I love you too, baby."

Dawbarn was a letdown as many expected him to sing solo too. He didn’t say much and just waved a little during the concert.

After a string of ballads, the crowd became restless. The group must have noticed this because it promised more dancing after singing A Little Bit More.

They then sang the uptempo The Journey, the title track from their first album. This kept the crowd on their feet.

Next up was the group’s cover of the Bee Gee’s More Than A Woman and Don’t Make Me Wait. These got the crowd swaying once again.

The fans later asked for Love Sensation, but the guys apologised, saying they didn’t include the song in their programme but would sing it later, after Wonderland.

In total, the group performed 18 songs, which were well received but a "live" band would have made a difference, giving the show a fuller dimension. Instead, it used minus-one tracks.

The MTV I Like 911 Concert was held in aid of Open Minds, a community development programme for the education of children with special needs.
