DAILY VARIETY (June 18, 2002; p.18) by Michael Fleming HYPE MACHINE EYES FILMS: When it comes to directing hip-hop videos, Hype Williams is without peer. But reality hasn't matched the hype in TV and feature films. The helmer hopes to change that by aligning with RSA, the production company run by Ridley and Tony Scott. Williams plans to do co-productions with RSA through his banner Naaila. While RSA facilitates Williams' videos and commercial work, Scott Free will work with Williams' Endeavor reps on a TV/feature transition that until now was limited to the low-budget drama, "Belly." Scott Free's the production arm that locates and produces directing efforts by the British brothers, who say they're happy to welcome Williams to the fraternity. "I've stolen from Hype Williams for years, and now he's part of the family," Tony Scott said. "It makes it legitimate." Williams hopes to emulate the success of the Scotts, who moved from commercial production into features. Williams has directed videos for Janet Jackson, No Doubt, Jay-Z, Will Smith, Ja Rule, Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliot, and commercials for Revlon, the Gap, Nike and MasterCard.
