All American Boyz!

... what's it like growing up in the states? 3T fill us in...

TJ, what was your childhood like?
My friends were great... I always got on well with my brothers and out family was very close. I love my friends, but as you grow up you see how people are - my real friends are the same, but some people are not as nice at they should be.

So have you had some difficult experiences with people?
Not too hard, cause I saw what they were like quickly and avoided them after that.

What nasty situations have you found yourself in?
Well, sometimes i would be in stores and the assistants would watch me closely - that happend to lots od coloured children. You know how you can tell when someone's watching you and then you look up and they look away quickly? So I could never pick something up in a shop to look at it - my white friends always could. then I was old enough to drive I got pulled over and they checked to make the car was really mine. I showed them it was mine, but I was really scared because they handcuffed me. They threatened to take me to jail.

   That's a pretty tough exeperience
It is and it hurts. It happend a lot with the LA police. My area was nice, but there's still a lot of crime and it's starting to spread. A lot of kids carry guns and there area lot of fights - it's like the movies!

What kind of people were you friends with?
Mostly people in sport - which is were we'd be if we weren't Jacksons and loved music so much! Most of our friends are athletes - they're all determined to succeed in their own field. A lot of kids in America don't look towards their future.

   What, people you know?
Just peopple you see everywhere - if you're driving down the street kids will stare at you trying to start something. If you stare back for more than four seconds you could be in trouble. I don't stare because I don't like the violence.

---

Taryll, what really reminds you of growing up?
My house - it's my father's dream house. He bulit a lot of it himself. He wanted to bulid a strong house for us because of the earthquakes. There are earthquakes all the time in L.A., but when we moved into that house nothing ever happened to it, it didn't have any earthquake damages.

Have you ever experienced an earthquake then?
Yeah, loads - at least four or five.

   Were you scared?
The first time I was scared, but not too scared becasue we used to practise at school what would happen if you were in an earthquake. I was about seven and by the time I could react it was over. I'm not scared anymore. I don't like it, though, because I don't like being in control. Although I belive TJ could sleep through an eartquake! My dad could do it, too!

He manage to sleep through an eartquake?!
Yes, millions of times, but I know TJ could do it. Taj could probably do it, too - he could sleep through anything! I couldn't do it... I don't fall into a deep enough sleep. They sleep forever!

Who had the biggest room in the house?
Dad - it was huge! Our room were normal kid - size, but we didn't spend much time in there anyway! There was a big room where we would play video games and have sleepovers. We had a wonderful childhood.

When did you leave that house?
When I was 11 or 12. We wnt with mom and dad stayed there, but we still saw him every week.

What was your new place like?
It was OK. It was nearer our school - that was the best thing about it. It was more of a temporary house so we never really got into it. We still haven't properly moved in to the house we're in at the moment - that's life on the road for you.

---

What kind of school did you go to, Taj?
A private school called Buckley and it was a very good school - it's known for getting people into good collages.

Did you get a lot of attention?
Yes, my graduating class only had thirty pupils in it, and in some schools in America they can have up to 200 people in a class.

   Tell us about your house...
It was really nice, kinda Spanish, the tiles and colours especially - like beige and brown. It was a great house, with a little pond in the front, a swimming pool at the back and a massive garden.

Did you help your Dad built it?
Well, we were little - he built it pretty much himself. We did help out with small thing whenever we could!

   What else do you remember?
It was a normal house... Mom always made sure that it was clean. We did have a couple of cleaners, though - one for the inside and one for the outside, and a gardener came every week.

Did you ever have to help with housework?
We did dishes, taking out the garbage and setting the table, stuff like that. We were responsible for our rooms as well.

   What was your bedroom like?
Pretty messy - we were kids after all! I had a poster of the Three Stooges on the wall - what do you mean, who are they?! They're a comedy team who appeared in loads of black and white films in the Thirties - I'ma big fan! I also had a computer and a water-bed which I got as a part of my graduation present!

Are they much comfier than normal beds?
Not really, and it kept popping. I kept dropping pencils on it and it would burst! I wouldn't recommend them - they are nothing special.
