Family: Fionnuala and James's children: Daire (born jan 31 1998) and Kate (born jan 6 2002). The rest of them are just about barely on the web. At least everyone has email. John is working in Athlone/Cork designing parts of pharmeceuticals plant. Bill and Pauline are working in Posterscope in Dublin centre. Mary's in UCC doing something like environmental science. Happy to report Mum & Dad are battling & conquering windoze, email and other nasty software.

I was from Cobh island. Now I'm from Dublin? Scary. I've visited some places. I have.

How To Become A Hacker FAQ |hack note stuff |Bizarre stuff
recent hacks :)

I have a lovely palm. I like it. I killed my PalmIII's screen twice and now I've a Palm Vx. It travels everywhere. I hack on it, write small programs, record diary, play tweedly music or games mostly. I encountered Commodore 64s first at school. Then we had one at home and I ATE the manual. Next was Amstrad 6128. Lovely thing. 3.5" disk drive ruled! :) Then off to college to experience VAX and 8080 PCs. In 4 years UL managed to go from 8080s with two 5.25" fdds to 486s ... wow. That was 1990 to 1994. In work play is with unix servers and PC workstations mostly. When I find time I play with lots ... including java, linux, perl, ... and of course reading slashdot/science news/ is much fun.

News: sci/tech, linux, hack, ....

Fionnuala bought a guitar. And of course I mess with everything ... so I'm afraid this hack out of guitar fretboard notes was inevitable. My brother Bill and assorted cousins can actually play (& even sing on occasion too). Recently collected some harmonica info for doul Bill. I have great fun playing recorder or tin whistle or guitar at home with Daire and Fionnuala. Oldish rock songs, some newer, nursery rhymes, scout songs, traditional Irish songs and anything (which doesn't go beyond C, G, D, A, E, Em, Am, Dm, F on the guitar).

I actually do a fair amount of STUFF. There's never enough time ... but sure what can we do huh? I would like to do EVERYTHING I like ALOT and even become really good at it. I guess I might attain competence and perhaps even expertise in things when I'm an octogenarian maybe. Right. We hike a bit, and even climb sometimes on the wussy Irish hills. I'm starting to get the hang of windsurfing. I sailed much when I was younger and spent a year in canoes in UL. I kite and practice origami. I look at stars & planets & such when the sky is dark. I draw very badly but it's great fun with Daire, make & do is great too ... we've made a lighthouse and rocket.

I cook. With mainly yummy, sometimes delicious, on occasion inedible consequences. We grow things and on occxasion eat them too.

I read. Science fiction, fantasy and a bit of everything else. Clive Barker, Ian Banks, Tolkien, Pratchett, Oscar Wilde, T.S. Eliot, Leslie Thomas, Neal Stephenson ....

I play some _conventional_ sports. Badly mostly. softball.

I would cycle everywhere if I could carry Fionnuala, Daire and Kate on my bike. I settle happily for cycling over rough field/motorway building site to work every day. My bike is heavyish, a bit Dutch, green saddlebags and Daire's bike seat on back.

Do I have a LIFE? :)
