NOVEMBER 2!
Rolling Stone reports on the "Symphonica" project:

Next Tuesday, the band will go into the studio with producer Bob Rock to work
on a new live album chronicling their collaboration with the San Francisco
Symphony, recorded last April 14-15 at the Berkeley Community Theater in
California.
According to Bruce Allen Talent, Bob Rock's management company, the Canadian
producer will head to San Francisco studio The Plant on August 11, where
he'll mix the as-yet-untitled record, which is due to be released on November
2.

Rolling Stone also notes that the "Black Album" will re released in the
DVD-Audio format in October!

SONIC NET REPORTS ON SYMPHONICA

Sonic Net has a lengthy article discussing the upcoming Symphony CD,
excerpts:

Metallica are preparing to enter a California recording studio to begin
editing a live two-CD set — including two new songs — that will chronicle
their April symphonic-metal experiment with the San Francisco Symphony
Orchestra.
"As far as incorporating any symphony into our new recordings, that was a fun
challenge," said Hetfield, speaking backstage at Woodstock '99. "It was a fun
thing to try and do. I never say never. But I don't feel we're going to get
75 musicians into a studio and pop off a little song or two".

The still-untitled symphonic set, also to be available on DVD and video, will
be derived from tapes of the band's two-night stand (April 21-22) at the
Berkeley Community Theater.

"A couple weeks into August, we'll get in there and start working on it,"
Hetfield said, predicting that the live album would be out in November. A
spokesperson for the band's label, Elektra Records, said a release date has
not yet been set for the album and video project.

"We put together two brand new Metallica songs especially for those shows,"
Hetfield said. "They're very Metallica, not written for the orchestra. We
just wanted to make it special with a couple new songs".

"We've always been into experimenting with things," (Jason Newsted) the
bassist said. "But you know there's a lot of new bands experimenting with new
sounds and technology, [and] it's only going to help your sound. ... I always
try to take on new influences, but don't ever get too far away from the
original influences".

Once the sessions for the symphonic set are completed, Hetfield said the
group will be eager to get back into the studio to record the follow-up to
the 1996 album Load and its 1997 sequel Re-Load.

Newsted said it would not be out of the question for the meat-and-potatoes
rockers to try their hand at using samples. "We shouldn't have too many rules
in the studio the next time," he said. "We really try to keep open about some
crazy ideas ... like James playing drums."

Metallica will finish out the year with a half-dozen live dates, culminating
with a New Year's Eve show at the 80,000-capacity Silverdome in Pontiac,
Mich. The Dec. 31 concert will also feature guitarist Ted Nugent and rap-rock
MC Kid Rock as opening acts.

MISSION: METALLICA

Entertainment Weekly reports that Metallica has "submitted" a song for
consideration in the next Mission Impossible movie starring Nicole Kidman's
husband Tom Cruise. The soundtrack, and movie are set for release in May of
next year.

James dedicated Turn The Page at the Woodstock show to Amanda. Dedications
have been very rare in Metallica history....

PRIMUS SAMPLER

Primus has posted a "sampler" MP3 for their new album called Anti-Pop. James
and Kirk appear on separate tracks on this album, we're not sure if they
appear on this clip that runs three minutes and 43 seconds, but we think so!
James appears on the song called Eclectic Electric, the Kirk song's title is
of yet unknown (although rumored to be a cover of a Bowie song!)

METALLISTOCK

An interview with Metallica at the Woodstock show confirmed a few things. The
band hits the studio to work on the Symphonica tapes for a release this
November along with another performance with the SF Symphony in New York.

ARTISTDIRECT PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCED

ARTISTdirect, operators of the Internet's premier music vertical, today
announced exclusive long-term partnerships with 44 of the world's leading
music stars, including Metallica. The deal allows the artists to generate
significantly increased revenues from product sales online and participate in
the success of the company as equity shareholders via stock options. Says
Marc Geiger, CEO/Co-founder of ARTISTdirect and a 15-year music industry
veteran, "The implications of this are far-reaching. Most importantly, this
marks the first time that artists have absolute control over media - they
control their own web sites, online stores, images, and downloadable music -
and have a direct ownership interest in the net result." According to the
article from PRNewsWire, "Each artist will have a retail presence in the
ARTISTdirect Network in the form of a superstore, which will offer CDs and
merchandise, rarities, news, information, MP3 downloads or similar digital
music files which are unavailable elsewhere. Twenty-three artist stores have
already launched; others are currently in production and will roll-out on the
ARTISTdirect Network through the end of the year." Says Lars, "The shortest
distance between two points is a straight line...ARTISTdirect gives us a
straight line of communication to our fans, and vice versa."

Also joining ARTISTdirect are such artists as the Red Hot Chili Peppers,
Korn, Limp Bizkit, Megadeth, Marilyn Manson, Ozzy Osbourne, Pantera, Pink
Floyd, Rage Against the Machine, Slayer, Social Distortion, System of a Down,
and many more.
