"All right, girls and boys. Just line up to get your gardianship papers. Girls on the red line over there, and boys on the blue line next to where I'm standing,"said the adviser, a tall man in a black suit who had told everyone to call him Jim."This shouldn't take more than an hour or two."
Angelica and Rachel winced.
"Isn't this fun,"Rachel said, grimacing. She walked over to the red line, dragging a folding chair she had brought from home with her. She had learned something from watching two older sisters go through this.
"Oh, yeah. Can't think of anything I'd rather be doing than sitting in the school auditoriam all day waiting to be assigned some human to look after," Angel remarked wryly.
Rachel and Angelica are both Faties. That's a race similiar to humans, but that have some minor magical powers. They're called Faties because most of the things that are blamed on fate are actually caused by a Fatie taking care of a human. Each Fatie is assigned a human to look after when they are sixteen or seventeen, unless they are deemed unfit by their teachers or parents. Each Fatie is given gaurdianship papers with the name and basic information about the human they are assigned to.
Once they are assigned humans, they act as sort of fairy godmothers to them. Since Faties are identical to humans, physically and mentally, they are usually assigned people at least a year or two younger than them.
Another thing that differs between humans and Faties is the fact that Faties live in the clouds. There are Faties whose only jobs are to chart airplanes paths and make sure that no one is ever seen by the passangers of airplanes.
One of the usefull things about living in the sky is that this makes it easier for the Faties to spy on their humans, with special telescopes, without being seen. This is necessary, since they can't read minds, and have no phsychic abilities whatsoever.
Faties also have cultures that are simialar to humans. They are raised by their parents, and have schools and universities just like humans do. Each Fatie is required to look after a human for at least a year or two in order to graduate their version of a high school. Some Faties marry humans and settle down to live on earth, but most prefer to keep to their own "kind" and away from humans as much as possible.
Rachel is a typical fatie. She and Angelica are both sixteen, though Angelica (called Angel) is about two months younger. Rachel has dark brown hair, and is about 5'8. Though her parents like to say she eats more than a growing elephant, she is very slim, due to the amount of excercise she does. Her eyes have been compared to the Brazilian rain forests on earth, and are her best feature.
Angel's name fits her looks very well. She has very long, very light blonde hair, with large blue eyes. She is only about 5'4, and is also of a slender build. She often gets teased about the irony of her name, and she like to torment her parents about it, though she's actually very proud of her name.
"Seriously, though, it will be cool looking after some human. I wonder who we'll get? Thieves? Saints? An orphan in desperate need of help? Or a runaway? I'm already picturing myself descending apon the person like Cinderella's gardian, and helping him or her into a better life," Angel said dreamily.
Rachel stared at her. "Uh...yeah...sure...ok. But don't you think it was a little irresponsible of Francesca to just float down and wave a dress onto Cindy? I mean really, it ended happily, but Cinderella could just as soon have been burned as a witch. She was relying too much on luck."
"You have no romance in you, do you?"Angel asked grinning.
They settled down for a long wait.
The twelve people on the gardianship committee were hard at work finding suitable gardians for the humans who needed them. Consulting a list, the head of the committee, a plain, grandfatherly old man called Dr.Masera wrinkled his brow in thought as he thought over this years group of potential gardian.
"Let's see. We'll give the Olsen twins to the Jones children, and see if that works out. Any objections? No. Ok. The next human on the list is a girl named Margeret. Any suggestions?"
The group went on like that for several hours, assigning each Fatie a human. There were many names on that list, some belonging to troubled teens, some to old men and women who had lost faith in life. Some of the people were just in need of a little guidance. Others were in need of a little bit of care. Some of the names were just on the list because the committee took a special interest in them, or had a plan for them. Each person had their own story. One of the names on this list belonged to boy named Jordan Taylor Hanson.....
