My music tastes vary. I listen to contemporary and acid jazz most of the time. Artists like Sade, Bobby Caldwell, Kenny G, Hiroshima, Crusaders, Boney James, David Sanborn, Kilauea, Bob James and Bascia. The sound of a saxphone is very relaxing. Try the CD called "Sax by the Sea" for a real treat in mediation - it is a mixture of sax and ocean sounds. I also like solo guitar and piano pieces. We have seven wonderful avenues in the central valley for enjoying fine jazz. They are "The Bastille" in Hanford, the Coombs Riverbend Ranch in Madera, Woodward Park and Fig Garden Village (the Fig Gigs) in Fresno for outdoor venues. There are also the Fresno Convention Center, the Tower theatre and the Tenaya Lodge outside of Yosemite.
A very good Nigerian friend turned me onto reggae some twelve years ago. Bob Marley and the Mighty Diamonds are among my favorites. I own an album of the Mighty Diamonds' live concert performed in Japan. The entire album is awesome and makes me wish I'd been there. There is nothing like reggae on a Sunday morning except during football season. I remember seeing a video of Jimmy Cliff singing "Many Rivers To Cross" that left me in dire search of it that same day. If you're into reggae try, "Reggae for Lovers" and "Reggae for Rockers".
Being the age I am, moldie oldies comprise most of my extensive LP collection. Yes, I said albums! Every now and again I dust them off and reminice - Tower of Power (they had the best horn section this side of the Rockies), Jimi Hendrix, Cold Blood (Lydia Pense's voice is in the class with Janis Joplin's), Marvin Gaye (especially the "What's Going On" album - its just as meaningful today as it was then), Santana, War, the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, the Eagles, AWB, the Temptations, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, the Spinners, Bobby Womack, the Isley Brothers, Jackson Browne, Earth, Wind and Fire and a host of many others too numerous to mention.
I dabble in heavy/metal (mostly due to my daughter). I thought parents were suppose to influence their children! Guns and Roses (November Rain). Slash did a nice jazzy piece...flamenco guitar, called "Obession Confession". Much props to him for a great number which really showed the world his versatility. Metallica, Led Zepplin (Stairway To Heaven). (Oops, let me turn down the volume on my stereo), Pink Floyd and Aerosmith are a few others.
Gotta throw in some rap for a real good mixture. Folks like Ice Cube, 2 PAC (Tupac Shakur: may he rest in peace), Heavy D (Bag of Blue Funk), Will Smith, Mase, Warren G and Dr. Dre.
There is pop/rock music that makes me want to get up and dance but the body just won't cooperate. Artist such as Prince (excuse me, The Artist, who is simply the greatest musician of this decade), Michael Jackson, George Michael (when he sang, "Don't Let the Sun Go Down" with Elton John, I got goosebumps), Maxwell, Bon Jovi , Boyz II Men, Janet Jackson and of course Journey. I had the pleasure of meeting Steve Perry and his family through his cousin who is a very, very good friend of mine at his late mother's home in Hanford during the mid 80's. He gave and autographed a copy of his "Street Talk" album that I cherish to this very day.
Nirvana, the Stone Temple Pilots and the Red Hot Chili Peppers (Under the Bridge)are the only alternative/grunge bands I enjoy listening to. Again, thanx to my daughter.
When I worked for the U.S.P.S., the office radio was tuned to country stations most of the time. One can not be inundated daily without some of it wearing off. Willie Nelson, Emmy Lou Harris, Randy Travis, Alan Jackson Crystal Gayle and the late great Patsy Cline are some of my favorite artists.
