For a better understanding of Cross story you need to know the context in which it took place. Uruguay is a small South American country that has frontiers with Argentina and Brazil. In the early '60's, as a result of the British Invasion phenomena (like in the rest of the America) Uruguayan kids formed their own garage rock bands, such as Los Mockers ( a band known by collectors all over the world and whose records have been recently released by different labels, but they have been curiously fully forgotten in their own country) and Los Shakers, among others. All this movement was finally smashed and buried by the cruel military dictatorships that devastated most of South American countries during '70's.Finally democracy came back in 1984 and brought freedom of speech, the one that allowed the revival of that spirit lost so many years ago. And so lots of bands appeared, Cross among them.In the very beginning Cross was a heavy metal band, one that stood out among other bands of the kind because of its punk lyrics and its dirty attitude. It took five years to get the first record, as the existing record companies were still influenced by the fear they lived in the past years, and so they considered Cross' proposal as a very dangerous one. It's hard to believe but every time this controversial band played live, it had the power of gathering lots of unconditional fans, but in spite of it, the backing bands were the ones who got their records first. So in this state of affairs its first album "Solo Quiero Salir de Aquí" (I Just Wanna Get Out From Here" was finally released in 1991. Its second album "Instinto Salvaje" (WIld Instinct) was released in 1992. This album makes a break with the band's past and it definitely shows an approach to raw power. Things have been very different from that time on, public seemed not to accept this change of trend and little by little the band lost its massive acceptance, as this kind of music is not acknowledged between most of South American kids.As a result of all this, record companies lost its interest in Cross too, so this band became a band of cult in Uruguay and in Argentina. Its last production "A Miles de Kms de Acá" (Thousand Miles Away From Here), is the first one released on CD format and it features "Solo Quiero Salir de Aquí" (which was a kind of anthem of Uruguayan youth boredom during '80's). This record was both recorded and released totally indie, in Marcelo's (leader of Cross and the only original member left) private studio. This record is a kind of mixture of several styles which range from heavy psych to raw power. After fourteen years of being on the road and being living in a country that neither understands nor accepts these proposals., it could be said that the final fate of this band will be the same as its '60's mates got.Now at the gates of the new century Marcelo has released his first solo effort. This album compiles unreleased songs written during the last ten years. These songs were once intended for Cross but as they didn't fit with the band hard style they never were included in any of Cross' records. Fortunately they are compiled now in this Marcelo Cross "Agujas En El Cielo", I hope you really enjoy them.
