 *  Bands And Music  *

oddmusic.com  A web site devoted to unique, unusual, ethnic or experimental music and instruments. It is an extension of the oddmusic internet mailing list (on Yahoo Groups)
ITDE  A web site for DaveX's experimental music radio show "It's Too Damn Early". The site contains playlists and archives of old shows. He plays a good variety of music and also has an improvsational section of the show where he mixes prepared music and field recordings. Sadly, he is no longer updating this site.
Mixing It  Web page for BBC Radio 3's Mixing It experimental music program (on at 11PM on Sundays). Great program! The web site has interviews, audio snippets, playlists.
310  Great quiet, reflective, sample-based, postal-enabled music.
Boards of Canada  Just wonderful stuff. Ambient without being trite.
Simian  Rather strange electronically enhanced psychedelic folk band from England. Suitably rather strange web site.
Cabaret Voltaire  Pioneers of electronic trance/dance and industrial music. Now no more, unfortunately. The Crackdown was probably their finest hour.
Chris & Cosey  Chris Carter and Cosey F.Tutti. Ex Throbbing Gristle. Electronic, experimental & ambient music. Their web site is very big, with a lot of stuff including Cosey's performance art & online album (etc) sales. Chris Carter has done a lot of gear reviews for Sound on Sound magazine.
The Enid  Prog rock lives! The Enid take progressive rock to the limit, with mighty orchestral synthesized arrangements. The concept (!) sounds dreadful, but when this stuff is done right (as by the Enid) it really is good. They live the life too - they live on a commune and produce & sell their records themselves. They also seem to be constantly on the edge of running out of money and being forced to give up. After a bit of a hiatus (running a cafe), they are now back in action.
Gong  From the planet... Gong. Founded by Daevid Allen, ex Soft Machine in 1969/70. They were the ultimate hippy band. They were into tape effects & hypnotic synth-driven mantras.You is the classic album, though I love Camembert Electrique. They became a fairly straight jazz-rock band after Daevid left. They are actually back together now with Daveid Allen. This site has lots of info about the band and its members, with on-line CD sales.
Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd   The Floyd were a brilliant original psychedelic band when Syd was with them in the late '60s.
The Residents  Very odd. Eyeballs for heads? What's that all about then?.
Shriekback  The ultimate undiscovered band. They should have been huge! Brilliant musicians & superb, innovative music. Dig out Sacred City or Go Bang if you can find them. My Spine Is The Bassline (from Care) is great!.
Attrition  A fellow Coventry band, brainchild of Martin Bowes. Electronic Darkwave. They've been working with classical musicians recently (viola, etc) which gives an unusual slant to their sound.
Recommended albums  This is a collection of some of the albums we would recommend from our CD collections. Might be of interest.

 *  Making Music - Resources  *

SynthZone  A massive site, with information on almost all of the music equipment manufacturers and loads of other resources (discussion lists, etc).
Sonic State  Another excellent synth site - with information, user reviews, discussions, etc. And it's British.
Harmony Central  A superb, enormous, general musc making site. With sections for synths (including loads of user-reviews), recording, computer music, etc. Lots of news & useful information & advice.
Sound On Sound Magazine  The website of a UK magazine covering electronic music equipment. Very good it is too. The site has news, readers ads (lots!), & archives of equipment reviews (all the reviews, going back years), lively forums and a good search engine.
Future Music Magazine  Another UK electronic music gear magazine website. The site has news, some online tutorials & archives of equipment reviews (though unfortunately not that many).
Computer Music Magazine  From the Future Music stable. This one covers (surprise) music made with computers (soundcards, sequencers, digital audio). Online tutorials and (a very few) reviews. For a specialist computer music magazine, it has reviewed remarkably few soundcards.
DJ Mix Source  Very useful and constantly developing resource site for DJs and anyone producing electronic music.
International Computer Music Organisation  Don't know much about this one, but apparently has a lot of useful advice on making music using computers.
Keyboard Magazine Online  US based electronic keyboard magazine. Some very good articles. You have to hunt a bit for the archives now.
Analogue Synthesis Explained  This is one of our own pages - explaining the basics of analogue synthesizers, with diagrams and sounds.

 *  Musical Equipment Shops  *

I've found it quite hard to get a decent list of UK music equipment shop web sites. So I thought I'd start my own.
I've generally only included shops with significant synth/sampler/computer music sections - 'cos that's what I like!
NB I'm not necessarily endorsing any of these shops - just listing them (in fact I haven't yet visited some of these sites). I've made the odd comment where I have tried them.

A & C Hamilton  Electronic musical instruments and guitars. Product lists and prices. 2nd Hand gear list. No online ordering.
Academy Of Sound  Electronic music gear - synths, samplers, computer audio, etc. Has list of in-store specials for each shop. Online sales.
Actionmusic.co.uk  Dedicated online music shop. Wide variety of stock (orchestral, rock, electronic, computer stuff etc) Online sales. Some discounts from RRP though I haven't yet seen any real bargains.
Advanced Sounds  New and used music gear. Also does studio/keyboard repairs. List of stock/prices on web site only - no online sales.
Analogue Systems  UK-based manufacturer of RS modular analogue synth systems. Modules and complete systems can be ordered direct from the company (though not online). Loads of very detailed info about the modules, with demo MP3s. Lovely stuff!
Andertons Music  Guitars, synths, FX, recording, PA, software, DJ stuff. Online sales. Has lists of offers and 2nd hand gear.
Blue Systems  Music PCs, computer music hardware/software. "Specials" not updated very often. No online sales.

Earth Music  Sell used music gear. Online sales with extensive catalogue.
Ebay UK  Online auction site, with music instruments section. Good (and popular) musical equipment section, but remember you are dealing with privates sales, not shops - so no guarantees. Electro Music  Based in Yorkshire. Quite a wide range of products. Online sales.
Electrofix  Second hand and ex-demo music gear (under Classified Sales section). No online sales. They also do music gear repairs.
Electronic Music Studios (EMS)  Makers of the VCS3, Synthi, etc. Still going - and you can apparently still buy these classic synths! Site also has a history of the company, with pictures.
EMIS  Based in Bristol. New and used gear (including Doepfer analogue synths). Stock list with prices, but no online sales. Also has a 'synthesizer museum' section - though this just seems to list a few synth makes/models with v.little info.

Kingfisher Music Company  Guitars, PA, recording, (home) keyboards. Has 2nd hand section (though mostly guitars and PA). No online sales.

Make Music  Synths, guitars, brass, synths, computer audio, DJ, etc. Online sales.

 *  MPEG Layer III Files  *

MPEG Layer III is a very efficient way of compressing audio files. You can get high quality audio into smaller (and hence faster downloading) files.

The Australian version of MP3.COM is still going strong - outlasting the orignal!
WinAmp  This is an audio player for 32 bit Windows (Win 95 or NT) which does a very good job of playing MPEG3 files. It also plays MIDI and WAV files, and probably many others. And best of all... it's now free! (used to be shareware)
Electronic Cosmo's MPEG Suite  This is an MPEG encoder for 32 bit Windows. It has apparently now been updated to work under Windows 2000/XP. It seems to work well, is quite small and it's free (though the developers would welcome donations).
MP3 Search  This is a web search site dedicated to finding MP3 files. I have put our page on their database.
