What the papers etc. said or rather didn't !
With the exception of The Jams 'Down in the Tubestation at Midnight', the set was made up of 'Ropey' Ropers back catalogue with 'Poles Apart', 'Lonely St' and 'The Man who would be King' all lovingly performed with much enthusiasm and gusto. The band also looked the part which always helps. One young lady even said that bass player Mark 'ginge' Blamey was 'lush'. I just patted her guide dog on the head and said nothing. In all not a bad effort boys !- Fanzine |
The band had the temerity to begin well before I showed up but they seemed to be coping all right. Clive and Frogg and the lads played predominately original material and this had a vaguely Doors style atmospheric melancholy. They are capable of writing coherent melodic rock, which seems effortless in performance if somewhat constrained. Less politeness, more noise, I say.- Soundtracks |
'Blessed with the innate melodic sense of the mighty Buzzcocks'- NME |
Well done site. The graphics are cool and the layout is interesting. The music is definately english in feel with a kind of Elvis Costello vibe.Great drums (natch)and some nice guitar tones.I liked the orchestrations whereby various instruments come in for a few bars or a section then are replaced by a different tonality (sneaky sophistication for what is essentially high-energy music).Well recorded, well mixed, well well well...I better say something critical uh...uh... oh well.-Tom Hicks, Fort Worth, Texas |
Then came The Nearly Men who, it must be said, have improved greatly since I saw them last with their two greatest influences The Stranglers and XTC and doesn't it show. Nevertheless, Clive 'Ropey' Roper held the set together with some exuberance and Frogg bashed his organ in a distinctive fashion while Gary and Mark kept the rhythm end up.-Soundtracks |
'Very interesting

Autumn, the website was very good !' Soren Jonsson, Sweden |
'Extremely tight and confident melodic rock'-Salisbury Journal |
With an ego the size of Clive's Who needs an audience !!- Fanzine (my favourite quote!) |
