Track by Track Review by The Rhythm Method
#1 - Do Your Own Thing The intro on this song sets the tone for the whole album. It starts out with a throbbing bass note and wailing guitars that build to a crescendo. Then, Brent kicks into overdrive thrusting the listener headfirst into the song! There's no mercy here for the innocent! This _is_ what you expect from Union! Do Your Own Thing is filled with catchy lyrics and a classic Bruce Kulick guitar solo. A great choice for a single!
#2 - Dead From the guitar chord and bass slide at the beginning to the ending note, this is a heavy song with a solid foundation. The lyrics are thought provoking and you can't help but wonder who they're aimed at! Nice solo by Mr. Kulick.
#3 - Everything's Alright With an intro that builds into an explosion of sound, you can't help but to be pulled into this song! It can only be considered to be a lyrical tribute to The Beatles. John is truly a master at painting pictures with his soulful voice. The chorus is layered, a very nice touch that is found throughout this album. The bass line, especially in the final third of the song, is a wonderful counter melody to the words. Definitely one of my favorites!
#4 - Shine This song is the perfect showcase for Bruce and John. Layers of guitars, each one intertwining beautifully with the next, makes for an awesome sound. And then, when you add in the strings, it provides a nice depth to the song. The guitar solo is highlighted with bass mingled with strings - very, very nice. The words, again, are very thought provoking and really make you stop and think - especially if you're a parent!
#5 - Who Do You Think You Are One of the more talked about songs from the album. A very heavy beat that's offset nicely by a light buildup to the heavier chorus that will, no doubt, be a staple at many shows during Union's upcoming tour. Again, another song about learning not to judge someone which seems to be one of the prominent themes on this album. A blazing solo by Mr. Kulick and nice fills by both James and Brent.
# 6 - Dear Friend A heart wrenching song for those that are Kiss fans. This is a song is filled with love - a very special song from the first note to the last. Bruce does a great job on the vocals with John filling in on the chorus. Musically, it has more of those wonderful layers that give each member within the whole band a chance to 'Shine'.
#7 - Do You Know My Name? Another one of those intro guitar solos before getting into the song. Thought provoking lyrics (although I still don't get this song - if someone would like to enlighten me I'd be very grateful!) with a wonderful lilting guitar throughout. The bridge has Bruce's signature riffs along with some great fills by Brent. The deepening of the voices toward the end continue with the ominous tone.
#8 - Hypnotized A Hollywood story about the difference between what you want and what you get. This song has a wonderful foundation provided by Brent, James and John with Bruce's lilting guitar throughout that gives it a fantasy feel. You can _picture_ the story as clearly as if you were watching a video.
#9 - I Wanna Be Again we have a nice intro to the song that's a combination of all the instruments. This is a personal favorite! The song has a slow, bluesy feel that showcases John's vocals and Bruce's guitar playing. This one is a wonderful addition to this album.
#10 - No More A great song to end the album with. This type of writing is one of John's specialties - thought provoking lyrics about today's social problems. The second part of the wake up call started off by Shine earlier in the album. There's a nice bass line throughout and in my opinion, this song showcases Brent's talent on the drums.
