THESE NEW BRITISH BOMBSHELLS also have tons of talent, style and energy, but All Saints go one step beyond the Spices by writing most of their own music.
Best known for: their self - titled debut album, featuring the abfab single and video "I Know Where It's At."
Next up: performing live in the States (hopefully.)
How would you describe your music? Natalie Appleton: Our sound comes from a variety of influences: hip - hop with a little rock, a little soul, a little bit of everything. We're fresh and new- I don't think anyone's doing what we are. All of our songs are unique. We're very proud of them!
Everyone's been saying you're the new Spice Girls. What do you think about that? Shaznay Lewis: When Spice Girls first made it big, I was shocked. I understand people comparing us to them, since we're the next big female group out, but those people obviously don't get our music.
What musicians do you admire? Shaznay: I go through stages- recently, Missy Elliot and L.L. Cool J. Lil' Kim is one of the best female rappers around, and as a lyricist, Alanis Morrisette influenced me to take it one step further. And I'd love to be able to sing like Chaka Khan.
It took four years for you to reach this level of success. Was it tough to stick with it? Shaznay: It was pretty rough, but we couldn't give up, weren't ready to get a "normal" job. I'd sit at home and sing all day. Everything happens for a reason- we had to go through the bad stuff to appreciate where we are now. Nicky Appleton: The belief in what we were doing was so strong that it keeps us thinking positive.
When did you realize you'd "made it"? Shaznay I think when we went to No. 1 [in the United Kingdom]. The whole week people were congratulating us and we were like, "It's cool." But then it hit me and I burst out crying. Melanie Blatt: We've been struggling for so long, always doing what we've wanted to do, that it's actually a bit strange that everything is happening now.
How do you feel about seeing yourself on billboards, in magazines, on TV? Shaznay: It's weird, and it's not hoe I imagined it would be. I look at myself in magazines and it seems like it's just me. I always figure we'd record music and that would be it. I never imagined in my wildest dreams being in record shops around the world.
