INCUBUS AND ANOTHER BAND

January 21st, Milan, Italy

This is the second time for INCUBUS in Milan, 12 months after the show supporting KoRn. In the meantime a new full length has been released, and we all have been gifted with 12 songs of pure funking genius. Many guys I've talked with were coming from outside Milan, and some of them had driven for more than 130 miles just to check Incubus' 40 minute set. What do you think, is it meaningful? Me and my friends are having a beer when Brandon and his fellows hit the stage, but, suddenly, the beer is over and the show is on. "Redefine" is the first tune. A short intro is performed just to introduce the band and gather attention, but the exploding riff soon takes its place, while people start jumping and freaking out. The quality of the sound mixing isn't that high, but no one seems to care, the funk is on and the place is being rocked! Most of the attention of the audience is focused on Brandon, but it's quite normal: how can you try to ignore such an entertaining frontman? He sings, jumps, plays his instruments with too many D's and J's in the name, speaks with the guys in the front row, shakes his dreadlocks...really great and, again, very entertaining and energizing. They introduce "A Certain Shade Of Green", and I turn to talk to a friend of mine and say: "This one kicks ass!". Ten seconds later I see this guy flying over my head shouting "What are you waiting fooooor....." I think he liked the song. Incubus played only 2 songs off their first EP "Enjoy Incubus", and unfortunately "Take Me To Your Leader" was left out of the setlist. I didn't even have time enough to think about it... Brandon is expressing his will to become a hot dancer...jump up! "Hilikus" is performed as well, and the "old" (?) fans show their appreciation for this song. In my opinion this was not the best tune of the set, but, of course, who am I to say so? A short moment of slow-funking is represented by "Summer Romance", and we all understand we were in need of a brief pause just to take our breath back. Well done guys! "Vitamin", "Idiot Box" are played in the second part of the set, and they both hit the audience, but "New Skin" is the conclusive track, which leaves us longing for more, but the show is over. I suddenly get the suspect that I won't be enjoying Sugar Ray. In the first minutes my idea is confirmed, but, as songs pass by, Sugar Ray grows on me and gets me enjoying the show. I notice some problems with the sound, expecially DJ Homicide behind his turntables sometimes disappears: we can actually see him scratch, but we don't hear anything of what he's doing. The highlights of the set were the fastest songs, including "Mean Machine" as well as "Speed Home California" or "Big Black Woman", but the impression I get is that the show SR played in Mezzago (a little town outside Milan) in October was indeed superior. More dynamic, with better sound and setlist. The concert, in that occasion, was a bit shorter, maybe three or four songs less, but way more "compact", way more exciting. Even this January's show wasn't a bad one, not at all, but I think it lacked of some intensity...let's rank it 7 out of 10, while the past one deserved 8 or even 9. What? You're asking a ranking number for Incubus? Let's make it 11 out of 10 ,ok?
