Sev, Far, Stealth, and Incubus
@ The Bayou in Washington, D.C.
March 22, 1998

The first band Sev was okay, in its most unoriginal form. There was nothing unique about them other than the fact that they're dumb enough to cover an Insane Clown Posse song. It pissed me off that they got to open for Far and Incubus. Next up was Far. As always they rocked the hell out of the joint. I don't know how they do it but their songs capture both my imagination and emotion. Not many bands are able to capture the live sound on their album but Far does it with style. They seem so incredibly genuine while they play - like there's nothing that could be better than playing in front of us at that very moment. I think they need to write a song entitled "Soul Cleansing" because out of the two times I've seen them I felt the same way - completely nourished and at peace with my inner self.

They were actually asked to cut one of their songs because Stealth was up next. This really pissed me off. For one thing, no one has really heard of Stealth and for another Far is so much better of a band. I don't like saying things like that because usually bands can't really be compared but in this case Stealth couldn't do anything right so therefore I feel I have every right to say it. Stealth went on to play a lackluster show. Their emotion was lacking, their singer couldn't make up his mind how to "un-sing" because he would go from this annoyingly high-pitched voice to this lower growl/yell. Regardless he couldn't make it happen. Basically the draw to this band (and probably the only reason they played after Far) is that their bassist is Darryl formerly of the Bad Brains who are D.C. legends. Eventually after a long cumbersome set where I was trying to not fall asleep, they finally left the stage. Incubus took the stage shortly thereafter. They opened with "Redefine" and went on to play a blazing set of fast hard-edged funk.

Their very eclectic sound on all their albums was caught nicely live. Brandon was right on key. Dirk (the bassist) was so fun to watch. He was all over the place and was just having so much fun. That's what I loved the most about this show (well okay just Far and Incubus), the fact that they had so much fun. It was an excellent show and I highly recommend you catch this tour. Check out our reviews of both their albums and also check out the interviews we did with them.
