The Roxy
Hollywood, CA
1/9/98
When I first saw this show up for sale at my local music store, I was seriously amped! An up-and-coming band (and a kick-ass one at that) at a small venue! What more could you ask for?
Upon entering the Roxy, I was shocked to see the place absolutely and completely packed. It was full on wall to wall people. All the times I’ve gone to the Roxy, I’ve never seen it that crowded. For a band with very little press and almost no airplay, it was good to see so many people into it. They did not disappoint. Incubus opened with a fury, maintained the energy throughout, and
closed with a bang. Brandon’s singing and stage presence was totally uncanny for a band with so little years under their belt. It’s like they’ve been at this for eons. The band was tight and the DJ added a great vibe to the whole mix, but the rhythm section really stole the show (including some funky drumming from Brandon). Incubus’s eclectic funk/hip-hop/metal/thrash sound really came off well in a live setting. Incubus practically played every song off their first full length album, S.C.I.E.N.C.E.. The real show stealers were "Vitamin", "Redefine", "A Certain Shade of Green", and "Glass". The bottom line is that these guys put on one hell of show. - Rob Martin
