Orgy
Candyass
(Elementree/Warner Bros)

ANYONE with even a passing interest in all things Korn-y would probably have heard of this lot already, but for the uninitiated, let me introduce to you the very latest, 'put all your money and yor left bollock on them becoming quite big', quite big thing. Orgy hail from Los Angeles, are signed to Korn's Elementree label, and this glammed-up industrial-electronic soundclash of Nine Inch Nails proportions has already been around for a while in the States, shifting 500,000 units and counting. But why the fuss? Are they worth the attention? Well, don't let the ropeycover of the classic 'Blue Monday' give you the wrong idea. 'Candyass' contains just enough bite in its searing electronic explosion to excite the most jaded of metal machinists. Like most big 'events' this record gets by on predetermined bravado and self-assurance, as if it's already told itself, 'I'm important, so you can stuck your opinion up your arse.' Moreover, they do actually have some tunes to back up the bumptious boasting. On 'Stitches' they trawl through the mechanical zoo and find a far more imprssive sleeping beast than the likes of Mr M Manson ever did. Similarly, on 'Dissention', the ante is upped and we seem to have a true contender on our hands. The pace does drop off somewhere around the ineffective 'Gender', and a couple of tracks grate with their bloated, misplaced pride, but by time of 'Pantomime', normal service has been resumed, and you lot can get down to the serious business of loving 'em, the little rascals. Blue Monday? A New Order Cover? That's Not Very 'Metal', Is It?

I hear you readers, but it IS a classic in anyone's language and I'm sure that if you scratch the surface of a lot of metal acts who are in any way interested in an electronic sound, important bands like New Order and Depeche Mode will always be mentioned as an inspiration, and rightly so. Not only that but they did dress up as a metal band in their 'Touched By The Hand Of God' video (even is it was as 'a bit of a laugh') and Peter Hook is still one of the rockingest bassists of all time, and they come from Manchester like me and... 1
