Serene's teary coda to his misunderstood vaudeville period. Oddly enough,
neither song on this single actually resides on the Heathens of Vaudeville
CD, although "Twice Nightly" was originally intended for it and
sat between "Delores" and "Unreal Man" before being
excised from the final running order. A rough mix of the album reveals a
troublesome original vocal track which alternated between full throated
call and falsetto response, the results sounding very much like a winded
Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald duet. Thankfully, a new vocal track was
recorded in November, 1996 at the Onederground Studios.
For a time, Serene and the boys hosted a Trash 'N' Vaudeville Night at Nita's
Hideaway every Sunday night just like Ed Sullivan. Needing an opening theme
for the show, the Morose One penned "Aggie" after reading George
Burns' book about Gracie Allen and their whirlwind courtship. Since Serene's
mother is named Grace, he went with another suitably old-fashioned name.
The tap dancing heard at the end of the song comes courtesy of The Lawrence
Welk Show. Co-producer and Zen Lunatics founder Terry Garvin is a Welk fanatic
and has taped countless hours of Welk programs. This particular one had
the show's token Negro, Arthur Duncan, tapdancing on a raft drifting out
to sea! Back to Africa was never like this!
