• The long-awaited new album by Dave Dobbyn was  released in New Zealand on August 7, 1998. It is titled "The Islander". Read the Sony press release.

 

• The players include Ross Burge (drums) and Alan Gregg (bass) from The Muttonbirds, and Peter Luscombe (drums) and Bill McDonald (bass) formally of the Black Sorrows and currently part of Paul Kelly's band. Neil Finn added some guitar parts too.

 

• The first (radio only) single "Waiting" is getting airplay on NZ Radio (especially 91ZM Auckland). A NZ on Air grant has been awarded for Hanging in the Wire. The video has been aired on NZ TV a few times. 

 

• Dave told NZ Musician magazine; "I haven't felt this fresh about music since I first got an electric guitar. In the middle of recording I figured out I'd had my stratocaster for 20 years, so I bought it a 20th anniversary present which was a red telecaster. You know, I've just turned 40 and the best thing that's happened to me is a rejuvination, a love of the music which goes deeper than when I first picked up the guitar. I haven't felt that excited since the first gig of th' Dudes... I've pulled 13 songs out of about 35, but it was hard to take songs away, which is a good thing... it means I have enough stuff and the process is ongoing. I wrote a bunch of songs in the studio anyway, but then I'm always writing and I'm always playing a lot... on my porch".

 

• NZ Musican asked Dave how different the new album will be; "You've got to re-invent, re-interpret yourself and this album's certainly not the same old me. I took the bull by the horns and I figured out my place in the world last winter, and had a very industrious time with a good balance between work and travel. It's a different record to Twist. It's much more evocative, a bit less ponderous in parts, and it's a happier album... you can have a good time listening to it. There are a lot of styles to choose from. I was pretty confused at the time of Twist but in many ways I've gone a bit deeper and darker in some ares, like on Blind Mans Bend which is a driving song, but it comes from a suicidal place in a way..."
