The Wired Dave Thread

From: Rob F.

Jon-Paul:

Two thoughts about Dave's interest in computers and the 'Net (from the March 1996 Infotech article):

> Dobbyn also has a file with every playlist from every concert he has performed.

Let's ask him to make this available (at least in *some* form) to this list!! That would be a great resource for tape traders and obsessive types (hello out there!) who appreciate this kind of information. If nothing else, just a list of his gigs for the past few years would make for an interesting read...

> Dobbyn would like to keep the homepage or permanent site on the Internet going and use it to offer the audience a range of "products".

Let's tell him about us and see if he's interested in collaborating in some way! He could update his web page and perhaps make it an interactive kind of thing -- at least with a link to this list.

J-P, please respond to this idea, since you're the DD list guru...

Hiya,

I've had similar thoughts to Rob, about letting Dave know about us. Especially since he's probably on-line. His web site is completely out of date, perhaps that would be the place to add his "set-list file". If he did find out about us (fans in the UK, Aussie, Israel, US, Canada and NZ!), he might be "kind" to the group, with promo material, live tapes etc (pure speculation of course).

If he was to put a link to this list on the WWW page, I think we'd have to do this more professionally- with a proper list server, like the CH one. At the current level, of about 17 members (most of whom are happy to lurk), things are easily sustainable, though I don't think I'd have time to sort through, and cut & paste, and resend messages daily, if membership grew to over 50.

I've only advertised this list on the CH list, and told a couple of my friends about it. List traffic will undoubtably grow when the new album surfaces, and at that time (around Christmas?), I'll be off on holiday, and/or working hard on writing my thesis. So unless we can get "upgraded", I'm not sure if that's a good idea.

My only question is will Dave also have to meet the humor threshold to participate in this list? (that is, above and beyond what he has provided in his recordings/performances?)

Seriously, it would be great if we could at the least make Dave aware of us, if not make him a fellow participant. I gave a paper a few years ago about pop music mailing lists and was surprised to find ho many of the artists participated in their own lists (like Suzanne Vega). Dave seems like someone who would be an asset to the list (yes, I can think of a few people who would be a liability).

The only problem is that text based things like mailing lists are not as sexy to most people (of course, as I do most of my internet activity on a very plain UNIX shell account, I can't understand that at all ;-) ). Everyone is concerned with pictures, movies, and sounds, and although I have fallen victim to that myself (I designed and coded my group's web page), the web often lacks that interactiveness and vitality of conversation--which is [I think] why so many web pages now feature....chat rooms. Dave's sophistication about such things may be equal to that say of a Chris Difford, so perhaps he will understand how our little list could be a commercial catalyst and fan-base building mechanism for him, especially outside of NZ. (BTW, what is the geographic breakdown of our little list?)

Sorry to ramble on, but even though my historical speciality is1880-1920, I am also very much interested in the internet.

Also, I regret to have to say that the closest Mr. Bowie got to Mars on Saturday night was the disappointing "Hallo Spaceboy". He has metamorphosed into Johnny Lydon/Rotten Bowie, complete with orange hair, Union Jack frock coat, and put-on lower class accent. Having seen the original, I can safely say he could easily kick Mr. Bowie's butt. Come to think of it, Dave probably could too.

Colleen.

Hiya JP,

I wanted to say that I really liked the article on the "Wired Dave." He's a with-it guy, isn't he? I also concur with the idea of contacting him.

I think DD would be happy to know that there's a group of supporters on the internet, and I bet he'd supply whatever info we needed to keep informed. I like the informal nature of this list, so I don't really want it to be huge a la the CH list. However, don't feel obligated to take on more than you can handle. Just say NO if it's too much work! ;-)

If you do contact Dave, how about asking him to come to San Francisco and do a show.

Ciao bello, Katie.

Hi All,

Noone seems to be against contacting Dave, and letting him know of our existence. I'll write a letter, and post it to this list, for any comments / alterations which any of you deem necessary. This will probably happen in a month or so, once we're all well established, and some healthy debate has begun. Then I'll send copies off to his management, and record company, and hope at least one of them makes it through to him.

> (BTW, what is the geographic breakdown of our little list?)

So far we've members from New Zealand, Australia, England, USA, Canada and Israel.

Later,

JP
