History of Phi Sigma Sigma


Phi Sigma Sigma was founded at Hunter College in 1913 by 10 friends. On November 26, 1913 The Alpha chapter of Phi Sigma Sigma was established with Fay Chertkoff as the first Archon. In 1918 Phi Sigma Sigma than expanded by installing the Beta chapter at Tufts College.

The ten founders of Phi Sigma Sigma are Rose Sher Seidman, Josephine Ellisen Breakstone, Estelle Melnick Cole, Fay Chertkoff, Gwen Zaliels Snyder, Ethel Gordon Kraus, Jeanetter Lipka Furst, Lillian Gordon Alpern, Shirley Cohen Laufer and Claire Wonder Mcardle

Our national symbol is the Sphinx. This was picked by founder Shirley Cohen Laufer because it represented the mystery and secrecy of womenhood.

Our flower is the American Beauty Rose,the Queen of all flowers.

Our stone is the sapphire.

Our twin ideals are the brotherhood of man and alleiviation of world pain

Our open motto is Diokete Hupsala(Aim High)
