Pink Floyd are one of the most influential and unique bands in progressive rock. They began their long career in
1968 with the lineup of Syd Barret(guitar, vocals), Roger Waters(bass, vocals), Nick Mason(drums), and Richard Wright(keyboards)
releasing The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. However, Syd Barret's LSD use soon led to his replacement by guitarist
David Gilmor as Barret lost a good part of his sanity in the process. Several early albums followed along with some soundtrack work but the
band did not find their sound until the 1971 release of Meddle which introduced lengthy and very spatial arrangements. The band
continued on with a string of four classic albums in The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall which
boosted their popularity but showed how Waters was taking control of the band for his own purposes. For the next release Waters
kicked out Wright and did what is thought of as more of a Waters solo album than a Pink Floyd offering with The Final Cut. The
band broke up in 1983 as Waters left for a solo career and since then the three remaining members have released two studio albums and
two live collections which carry the Pink Floyd sound to some degree but don't come close to the 70's material.
