Fates Warning is perhaps the most underatted band in progressive rock. They started off in the early 80's under the name The Misfits which was changed to their present title shortly before releasing their first album Night on Brocken in 1984. After three more straight-forward metal albums singer John Arch left due to personal reasons and was quickly replaced by the talented Ray Alder for the band's fourth release No Exit. No Exit was a ground breaking album for the band as they further explored the realms of progressive metal with the 21 minute long "The Ivory Gate of Dreams". This was when the band decided that Steve Zimmerman, although an accomplished drummer, was not what the band needed and asked him to leave in place of the drumming wizard Mark Zonder. Fates Warning's next realease Perfect Symmetry saw the band explore new musical platues and still remains a favorite by many die hard fans. For their next progression Fates chose shorter and more commercial songs for both Parallels and Inside Out. What followed was a near break-up which saw Joe Dibiase and Frank Aresti leave the band for different reasons. This brought up the question of what the band was to do next so after aquiring Joey Vera on bass and getting Kevin Moore to fill in on keys the band released their latest effort. A Pleasant Shade Of Gray was released early in 1997 had has since been hailed as a masterpiece by most who have had the pleasure of hearing it. It consists of one 52 minute long song which was broken into 12 parts for convience reasons on the cd format. With this effort Fates Warning has left it's mark on the progressive world and will still remain the hidden treasure of great underground music.

Night on Brocken - 1984 Rating: Not yet rated.

The Spectre Within - 1985 Rating: Not yet rated.

Awaken The Guardian - 1986 Rating:
An album that is truly unique with it's heaviness and layered vocals. Very mystical and full sounding recording with some amazing and strage harmonies from John Arch.
Highlights - "The Sorceress", "Guardian", and "Prelude To Ruin".

No Exit - 1988 Rating:
The first album with Ray Alder on vocals. The production is suprisingly weaker than on Awaken The Guardian but the songs are a bit better. Ray's voice really soars on this album and the music is very heavy but complex at the same time.
Highlights - "Anarchy Divine", "Heavenly Shades of Death", and "The Ivory Gate of Dreams".

Perfect Symmetry - 1989 Rating:
The first album featuring Mark Zonder on drums. This is probably the band's most "progressive" work to date. The album features a great mix of clean and distorted guitars, odd time signatures, a guest appearance by Kevin Moore on "At Fates Hands", and even some violin here and there.
Highlights - "Part Of The Machine", "At Fates Hands", "Chasing Time", and "Nothing Left To Say".

Parallels - 1991 Rating:
Often described as the band's "commercial" album. Contains shorter and catchier tunes while maintaining complex chord progressions. The sound quality is great as it was produced by Terry Brown(1974-82 Rush).
Highlights - "Life In Still Water", "Eye To Eye", "The Eleventh Hour", "Point Of View", and "The Road Goes On Forever".

Inside Out - 1994 Rating:
Along the same lines of Parallels with shorter songs but with a slightly harder edge. Contains some amazing songs but also some passible ones too.
Highlights - "Outside Looking In", "Island In The Stream", "Face The Fear", "Monument", and "Afterglow".

A Pleasant Shade Of Gray - 1997 Rating:
A single song broken down into 12 parts. The band's most ambitious work and a masterpiece in the progressive world.
Highlights - :).
