After spending Christmas with her family in Australia, Natalie Imbruglia will start writing her follow-up to Left of the Middle in Los Angeles in January. Imbruglia, who performed on the Billboard Music Awards show on Monday (Dec. 7) in Las Vegas and won the Adult Top 40 Track of the Year for "Torn," told reporters backstage at the awards that she's working with a variety of writers, including Mark Goldenberg, who worked on her last album, and former Eurythmic Dave Stewart, with whom she's worked before and has been trying to hook up with for the past several months. Stewart will be in L.A. at the same time, so the two will finally have a chance to give it a go.
"There's a whole bunch of people I'm gonna work with, a whole bunch of collaborations," she said. "We'll condense it down, then I'll start looking for producers." She plans to only use one producer this time, instead of the several on Left of the Middle. When asked why, she answered, "It's just what I want to do. The first time, I let myself be really experimental."
She called off her planned February tour in order to work on the album. "I want to come to America with two albums, not one... It will be worth the wait."
As far as re-entering the acting world, Imbruglia gives that idea a big thumbs down. "I have no intentions of doing that," she said. "I feel like I just started something... Never say never, but I can't see it happening in the near future." (--- All Star News, 12/08/98)

Natalie Imbruglia is set to release her third single: ‘Wishing I Was There’, in the UK, this week. But in the USA, she’s just made it big with ‘Torn’, the single that broke her in the rest of the world. While most artists have to tour America before achieving success in the States, the former Aussie soap star had a huge hit with her debut single - and her album ‘Left Of The Middle’ went top ten in its first week. When she was in the States, Natalie did the promotional rounds - including a performance on David Letterman, which she described to The Net.
"Letterman was very freezing cold. He has his studio at a really low temperature. I don’t know why that is. I guess cos the show’s filmed in the night-time, so probably to keep people from falling asleep. But I had a really good time. He tried chatting with me, but I had my ear monitors in, couldn’t hear a word he said, so I was just nodding politely, going ‘yes, yes’, you know, sounding interested."
Despite success elsewhere in the world, making it big in America has come as a ‘Big Surprise’ for Natalie:
"It wasn’t in my mind at this stage of the game to crack America, so I was completely taken aback when they told me ‘Torn’ was getting lots of radio play and it went on… my album debuted at 10… I’m still recovering from that one." (--05/27/98, author unknown)
Did you catch Natalie Imbruglia on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Friday night (06/05)? Natalie says the most outrageous things --- natural, but unintentional.
Let me preface it by saying that Natalie appeared after this chef who cooks with insects had an on-stage demo. After seeing worms and bugs being stir-fried in a wok, you get an uneasy feeling in your stomach. I guess having Natalie as a dessert was worth waiting for.
Natalie had a slight cough after performing, "Torn". She asked for a glass of water. She apologized and said that she had a "bug" in her throat. Laughter erupted. Remember the last guest.
Natalie later talked about her family. She said that she had "three sisters ... all girls." Leno milked that one for all it was worth.

Fine, Torn has a pleasant, flowing up-tempo feel, and it certainly deserves the international success it has achieved to date. But this album as a whole doesn't distinguish Imbruglia from all the other talented ladies in her genre. Without a doubt, she has a raspy, munchkin, Jewelish voice, and delivers 12 very light, very catchy, very radio-friendly tracks, but it's disappointing that a production team consisting of ex-Cure member Phil Thornalley and Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich couldn't sculpt an album that left a more distinct impression on the listener.
On the middling side of the middle, Big Mistake invokes the urgent, caterwauling, shout/sing style of Alanis Morissette, and the three-part harmonies of Intuition are reminiscent of Wilson Phillips. Leave Me Alone sees Imbruglia attempt a kind of part dreamy, part dreary triphop, but she bits too deeply into Beth Gibbon's style and the result is thin and amateurish (though it'll still get airplay).
But on the right side of the middle, it's obvious that the singer worked very hard on this album. Every song has its own personality; there is no annoying sameness to the tracks. Refreshing multimedia manoeuvres grace most of the songs (subtle electronic injections, theremin vibrations, some vocorder singing), creating an air of unpredictable adventure.
Overall, Left of the Middle will make a new name for Imbruglia, though not necessarily a legend. (--- Liane Balaban)
"I hope I don't get too happy. People start making shitty albums when they get happy. I can create my own misery; don't worry."
In the music business, it helps to be lucky. But when you have little something extra --- a little something like, say, talent --- well then, you're on your way. Petite Australian Natalie Imbruglia is on her way. A former soap star Down Under, Imbruglia exchanged television studios for recording studios and the results are stellar. Led by her hit single "Torn," which spent 14 weeks at No. 1 on its way to becoming a million-seller, Imbruglia's debut Left Of The Middle has already enjoyed record-setting airplay in Europe. Though her modern rock/straight pop sound won't set records for originality, Imbruglia is a powerful singer and songwriter, with charisma somewhere between the earthiness of Sheryl Crow and the breathy surrealism of Jane Siberry. Songs like "Torn" and "One More Addiction" feature Imbruglia's vocal dynamism mixed way up, sense-surrounded by a big rock feel and even bigger hooks. To her credit, Imbruglia enlisted a fine crack band and some terrific assistance in creating Left Of The Middle, with former Cure member Phil Thornally as a writing partner and former Radiohead affiliate Nigel Godrich as producer. With these elements in place--and a little more luck--Imbruglia will indeed be motoring down the platinum-paved road to superstardom (--- Bob Gulla)
