NEWS from 1997
June

4. June
Rob will finish the work on his album tomorrow and according to the english press he'll go straight into a private clinic to go into treatment and sort himself out. We all wish him a soon recovery!

17. June
It's three weeks to go until 'Lazy Days' will be released and it already got some airplay in the UK. It's a nice rock ballad with a slight 'Hey Jude' touch in the end. YEAH! YEAH! YEAH!...

18. June
Yesterday I heard Rob's new single for the first time. Here is a sound wave if you would like to hear it: "Lazy Days"

28. June
Along with other artists Rob did some recording for a tribute album for EMI Records.

July

10. July
Rob is back-with a shaved head! He did a pre-recording for Top Of The Pops today. He looked fab in his silver suit- a bit slimmer than a couple of weeks ago. At the begining of the song Rob wore sunglasses and when he finally showed his eyes we still could see a bit of a wearines there. But it was great to see him on a stage again!
'Lazy Days' is out on Monday and you can see Rob and his band perform it on Top Of The Pops next Wednesday.

11. July
In an MTV interview Rob said that he is in no competition with anybody. He's doing his music for himself and for those who wants to listen. This rivalry between him and Gary is just been made up by the press. He really appreciates what 'the others' are doing and doesn't see them as compe-
titors. What competion anyway?! It's four out of five who used to be in the same band but now they are going in four different directions. You just can't compare their music because they all got their own type or style... whatever you want to call it!
Anyway, you can see the whole interview on this week's MTV News Weekend Edition.

13. July
Now there we have it: Rob lost Two Stones since he started his rehab. At first it was hard for him because he loves junk food, but he was sick of looking bloated and feeling awful. Now he's looking better than ever.
Here's what the News Of The World says about his new single:
"Robbie has been through the mill but you can't tell with this strong, thumping good single. It is a real departure from his previous teeny-pop efforts- ultra trendy, very Britpop and atmospheric with a wall of guitars and an imposing beat. It wipes the floor with rival Gary Barlow's latest cheesy ballad. Now Robbie's decided to go for a hammering new style, we can look forward to his album."

14. July
Rob entered the charts today at number 7! A guy from HMV reckons the he will go straight in at number 2 at the official UK Top 40 show this coming weekend. Number 2 because he won't have a chance against the current No 1!! But with that kind of competitors No 2 will be "good enogh"...D' you know what I mean?...

"Lazy Days" is available on two CDs and Cassette.
On CD1 you'll find two new songs, "She makes me high" and "Ev'ry time we say goodbye" alongside "Lazy Days".
CD2 features yet another two extra songs: "Teenage Millionaire" and "Falling in bed (again)". And that's what you'll get with the tape as well.

And here's Rob's message for all of us:"Sun, sand, sea & frolics and perfect "Lazy Days" it's what summer's all about. Have a great one!!!"

16. July
Here's a Pepsi-Chart update: Rob entered the official UK Top 40 at
No 38 last Sunday! And this was just because of the airplay "Lazy Days" had so far...

17. July
Rob is Midweek's Charts No.3 this week! Let's hope he'll have the highest new entry on the weekend.

19. July
According to the "Chart Show" Rob entered the UK Charts at No 10. But that could change until Sunday as the official charts 'count' the sales until Saturday night. But it's definitely a 'battle' against Gary as he entered at No 9...

20. July
Rob entered the UK Top 40 at No 8 while Gary got in at No 11...
But the big news is Rob's album "Life thru a lens" will be out on 29th September!!!

21. July
Rob appeared in court today as Nigel Martin-Smith is suing him for some kind of "damage" for when he left the band. He will be back at the High Court tomorrow and Wednesday. The whole case is expected to last up to five days.

22. July
The Sun says: Pop heart-throb Robbie Williams faced a £1million High Court battle yesterday- fresh from his drug-and-booze nightmare.
The 23-year-old singer is being sued by his former manager Nigel Martin-Smith for huge amounts of commision.
Rob is contesting Nigel's claims for £78,000 from royalties and advances and cuts from his earnings until 2006. The case could cost him up to £1million.
He will give evidence tomorrow and Gary may speak via satellite from Los Angeles.
The hearing continues...

23. July
I have been to the High Court today to get the news 'as they happen'. Both, Rob and Nigel, looked very confident. Rob, wearing a dark-brown suit, looked better than ever. He got his 'old shape' back and as he said before: the glint is back in his eyes!

Rob was supposed to give evidence today but - as an usher told the audience- it had been decided yesterday evening that he won't give any evidence at all.
Nigel was heard on Monday (and Tuesday it had been discussed by their lawyers and the judge). Today from 10.30am until 1pm Nigel's lawyer was mainly repeating what was already said in the previous two days.
Now one might think that- without telling "his side of the story"- there won't be any chance for Rob to win this case. As without saying anything he would appear to agree to everything that had been said.
But although I've only been there this morning I got a feeling in which direction this case is going.
Nigel's lawyer seemed very uncomfortable and was stuttering a lot. At one point though he was very positive which was when he questioned Rob of not giving evidence as it had been expected at the begining of the case. The judge seemed to agree on that which really gave the impression that this case is lost for Rob.
But when the judge finally spoke I had the feeling that it was the other way round.
He questioned a lot of things that were said earlier- even that he sometimes he doubted Nigel said the truth during his hearing on Monday!
All in all he was very positive in Rob's favour.

Well, it got 1pm and the judge decided to go for lunch. And as there's no chance that a result will be heard this evening I decided to get home as soon as possible to share with you what I have heard at the High Court in London...

As the case continues I guess we're all wishing for a 'Happy End'!

24. July
Rob left the court yesterday saying: "I'm going to become a priest!"
He must have been very bored during that long lasting speech of Nigel's lawyer that he went out for a fag inbetween.

26. July
Rob appeared at the Capital Radio Cafe in London last night. He performed accoustic versions of "Lazy Days" and "One of Gods better people", which is another song of his forthcoming album. It was just him and a guitarist, who also did backing vocals.
Asked, what "Lazy Days" is about he said: "It's just about sex and getting drunk really..." The show was live on LWT and Capital FM from 11pm until 0.30am.

27. July
Watch out for a football match on August 10! Rob is going to join Ross Davidson, John Leslie, Chris Quentin and Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards for a charity football match. Rob asked Jess Conrad if he could join his Showbiz Eleven and he's really looking forward to playing.

28. July
Rob droped nine places to No 17 in the UK TOP 40. But still he's holding a better position than Gary who droped down to No 30.

30. July
Robbie Williams shows he is confident about the outcome of his court clash with his former manager in a cheeky photo shoot.
The singer seemed to give a V for victory sign as he posed in a sleek Alfa Romeo Spider sports car for the cover of his new album.
He was snapped in Lincoln's Inn Fields-the heart or London's legal land.
Last week, just yards away at the High Court, Robbie faced Nigel Martin-Smith who is suing him for compensation after he left Take That in 1994.
A pal of Robbie's says: "The photo is typical of his anarchic humour. It's his way of showing the court case won't get him down."
Let's hope he's still smiling after the verdict which is due soon.
The album will include his latest single Lazy Days and is set to be released on September 29th.

The Sun

31. July
Here is what Ann Harrison, who represented Rob during the court case last week, had to say about Rob not giving evidence:"We felt there was nothing further he could add that were not in documents the judge had or evidence given. It is also somewhat of an ordeal and there was no point besides giving the tabloids more stories. Rob felt strongly that he didn't walk out and you wonder why Martin- Smith wasn't at the meeting because he was at every other important one."

The case concluded in the High Court on Friday, with Judge Ferris indicating that he may not pass down a ruling for three months.

August

1. August
There's no News today...but a new interview! You'll find it at the usual place: "INTERVIEWS"

13. August
There are some new photos in the Sky Magazine - one with his trousers barely covering his willy...
In the interview he admits he took drugs at school and dropped acid just half-an-hour before sitting his GCSE RE exam.

This week there's also a feature on him in the Big Issue. In that interview he talks about his time at rehab and that he was at the brink of suicide.

24. August
Robbie will visit radio stations across the UK in just three days- by helicopter!
The trip starts on August 25 at GWR in Birmingham before moving on to cities including Sheffield, Liverpool, Preston, Glasgow, Dublin and Newcastle.
His album "Life thru a lens" will be out on September 29 with a tour following in October.

27. August

"Rob proved that he was back in business when he delivered a sizzling set at the Still Tango Music Jam2 gig in Birmingham.
Looking tanned and fit, he was clearly back to his best, thrilling the Monday night audience of 10,000 teenagers.
He then showed that he was back to full fitness by leaping around and doing a series of high kicks.
Robbie tore into hits Old Before I Die, Lazy Days and new single South Of The Border during a 15- minute set.
A spokesman for the bash says:"Robbie was particularly relaxed and just sat around drinking bottled water and eating fruit. He was looking fantastic- really fit and healthy. He was really chilled and looked like he was enjoying being back."

The Sun

28. August
Today I came across the first album review of Life Thru A Lens. So here it is!

Post-Take That life for the ex-pop pin-ups has been all about attaining some form of credibility. It happened way before they finally petered to a soggy end. On the last post-Robbie tour, fans witnessed the undignified sight of the four remaining members doing a "we are playing these instruments, honest" version of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. It sounded awful, but that wasn't the point. The intention was to tell the world that they weren't just pappy no-marks but tortured souls as real as Kurt Cobain, suffering the same pressures and every bit as deserving of proper critical attention. All pop stars go through this-Kylie, Bros, Duran Duran- none of them realising that they are at their most interesting when they're at their most fake. Still, it's always funny.
Howard and Jason are yet to re-enter the pop fray, but Gary, Mark and Robbie have been continuing the battle to be taken seriously. Gary Barlow is attempting to be George Michael, but has ended up being Barry Manilow, and Mark Owen has gone indie and surrounded himself with a mini Shed 7. Only Robbie seems to be making records worth listening to rather than an exercise in proving himself- joyously, he doesn't seem to be trying too hard and has retained an air of getting away with it, which for a pop star is as near to dignity as you can achieve.

Part of Robbie's charm is that he fucked up so magnificently and so publicly. After leaving Take That he took to the social whirl with gusto, inventing a new spin on 'avin' it large' by actually turning large in the process. He's slimmed down and been to rehab since, but his 'year of shame' gave him something to write about and pitched him into the far more interesting firmament of liggers and ne'er-do-wells. It's had a pleasing affect on his music, too: influenced by Oasis, Black Grape, The Kinks and The Small Faces he's succeeded in putting a Robbie veneer on top. The lyrics- he co-wrote all the tracks here with ex-World Party man Guy Chambers- are fabulous:'Old Before I Die' offers a brilliant (and honest) twist on 'My Generation'; 'Life Thru A Lens' takes a long overdue pop at the lifestyle of London It Girls- "You sound so funny with your voice all plummy"- and 'Clean' comically details the giddy headfuck of stardom. With rhymes running into one another like falling dominoes he turns in a few peculiarities like "Hide away in your ivory tower/And cover me in your golden shower"('Ego A Go Go'). As a consequence, all the songs sound like they were written in half an hour- which is no critism. There's no point trying to be Elvis Costello when there's paries to go to. 'Freedom' isn't included here, but there is a George- Michael- doing- Elton- John moment, 'Angles', which turns out to be the records nadir. Robbie's far better when he's trying to give some Jagger'tude.
'Life Thru A Lens' is a glossy, bold, funny, frolicking, lolloppy, shiny, lovely, gurning pop album with ten ace guitar-driven post-Oasis pop songs on it and one slimy pre-Oasis ballad. Which is more than we could have reasonably expected.
Don'tcha just love him?

September

8. September
Just a couple of days until the release of South Of The Border as well as the long awaited album there's another "INTERVIEW" to sweeten our "patience"...

9. September
Today let me introduce a new "chapter" here: REPORTS.
Whenever there's something that is not an interview or latest news it will appear here. By the way: everybody's welcome to conribute articles from their country!...

11. September
Rob has been back in the papers today. The story is as follows:

Robbie has rekindled his relationship with Anna Friel. They have been seen kissing and cuddling at trendy London restaurant The Bank- before heading off to Anna's London flat.
The Sun

As we know from recent "INTERVIEWS" they had just met in June and the papers already made up a big story. Especially after Rob was seen with that 'myterious girl' shortly before he went into rehab.
Good luck to them this time!

Robbie is featured on the charity album Come Again with "Ev'ry time we say goodbye". The album celebrates 100 years EMI and also features Dubstar, Kenickie, The Fun Loving Criminals and many more.

12. September
Interesting news but with a sad background:

Gary plans charity gig
Singer Gary Barlow wants to reform Take That for a one-off tribute to Princess Diana.
He is urging former co-star Robbie Williams to end their feud and take part in a concert for Di's Memorial Fund. Boyzone, Eternal and Peter Andre have already said they are keen to appear at the proposed Wembley Arena gig in December.
Gary said:"Older artists like George Michael and Elton John will organise a big stadium show. But it would be fantastic for Britain's younger groups to make their own tribute. Diana was a wonderful woman."
Take That played at Di's Concert Of Hope in 1994 to raise cash for AIDS causes. Robbie went solo six months later and the band finally split last year.
A war of words erupted and Robbie wrote a song Ego A Go Go as an attack on Gary.
Gary, who wants the new gig to be a memorial Concert Of Hope , said:"Hopefully we can bury our differences and make a real night to remember."
The Sun

There's also a fax number for those who'd like TT reform for Diana:
0171 782 4350.

Today Gary told The Mirror:"Robbie would have to be there. If it's four of us, I won't want to do it. It's got to be the five of us." He added:"If fans call The Mirror and say they want this concert, I will undertake to do it."

To vote yes:0930 564 623
To vote no:0930 564 624

Lines will close at 6pm on Saturday and Mirror Group profits will go to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.

13. September
The Sun says:
Robbie Williams has ended is feud with Gary Barlow and agreed to reform Take That for a Princess Diana memorial concert.
The warring pair spoke to each other for the first time in two years yesterday after I acted as a go-between.
Robbie was not keen at first because he thought Gary wanted to stage a full Take That gig. But when I told him Gary was only planning to perform three numbers he said yes at once.
I passed on the message to Gary in Stockholm where he immediately called Robbie in London.
Then Gary rang me to say:"I've just phoned Rob and before I could start he interupted and said, 'Gary, I'm in mate.' It's just fantastic."
The pair had been at each others throats since Robbie quit in July 1995.
The reunion for the Memorial Concer Of Hope at Wembley now looks certain to go ahead.
Mark Owen has already agreed and Jason Orange and Howard Donald are expected to say yes.
Robbie said:"I suppose I'm now ready to bury the hatchet but, to be honest, a lot of what's been said has been light-hearted."
But he did put some condition on the reunion-no dance routines!
He said:"The concer is a great idea, but I'm not doing any of those old dances and I can't wear those old stage outfits either. I think we've all moved on from the G-strings!"
Gary told me:"I'd likd us to sing Relight My Fire, Back For Good and Could It Be Magic? which Rob sang lead vocals on.
"And I'm quite happy for us not to do the dance routines-I was never any good at them anyway!"
It is hoped other top acts like the Spice Girls and Boyzone will join the boys on stage. All proceeds will go to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.

14. September
Robbie took up a challenge and stripped to his shorts when some teenagers invited him to join their football game in Hyde Park. As you can see he's back to fitness...He scored twice!
What did he look like? Well, check it out in the PHOTOS section!

15. September
South Of The Border, Robbie's new single, is out today. It is available on limited four-track CD with a free poster, five track mix CD and a cassette.
You can hear Robbie play six songs from his forthcoming solo album, Life Thru A Lens, live on the Jo Whiley Show on Radio 1 on 22nd September.

Yesterday Robbie and his mum were seen in an audience for a LWT TV show.

16. September
Here's an update on the Take That reunion: Yesterday Gary confirmed on GMTV that all five guys agreed to it. So the concert is going ahead as planned on 7 December!

18. September
This coming Monday, 22nd September, Rob will be chatting live to fans from all over the world on Capital Radio. So make sure you're online at 5pm BST (4pm GMT) on Monday to put Rob on the spot, as he answers your questions live from the comfort of his home!

19. September
We've just heard that there won't be a Take That reunion as Rob and Mark didn't agree to it. But there still might be a tribute concert which will be organized by Gary.

20. September
There's a report in The Sun today, that claims that Mark didn't want the renunion for a tribute concert:
Take That reunion wrecked by Mark
Mark has dashed plans for a Take That reunion in aid of Princess Diana's Memorial Fund.
The singer has pulled out despite backing the idea when it was announced last week.
Without Mark there will be no reunion. Gary Barlow has made it clear it will only take place if all five members agree.
It was hoped Mark, Gary, Robbie, Howard and Jason would sing three hits to round off a Concert Of Hope
Gary and Rob have both committed themselves to the gig.
They agreed to drop Take That's complicated dance routines because of lack of rehearsal time.
But Mark told me yesterday it would still be impossible for Take That to reunite for the December show, saying:"We wouldn't be good enough."
Mark - who would be happy to perform a solo set - says:"It took Take That two months to rehearse our shows when we were together and there's no way we could be ready for this concert.
We would be blown away be the other bands. There's professional pride involved here." When I asked how much time he would need to prepare for just three numbers without dance routines, Mark replied:"Too long."
Last night Gary, who is on a promotional tour of America, was stunned by Mark's comments.
He said:"I spoke to Mark last week and he was up for the show. He told me that he was in and wanted to be a part of it.
I don't know why he thinks it would take so long to rehearse three numbers. I'm sure we could get it together quickly and I hope I can change his mind.
I'm coming back to meet with the rest of the boys and we will try to sort it out."
Altough Howard and Jason are staying silent, Robbie is still pleding his support.
His spokesman says. "Nothing has changed as far as Robbie is concerned and he's in."
Show organiser Rod Gunner said:"Whatever happens, we will have a very impressive line-up."

In an earlier issue of Smash Hits there was an address of an new Robbie Williams fanclub (which to me sounded dodgy as it is an 'allround' address!)
Anyway, today I receive a letter from the "one and only" Official Robbie Williams Fan Club. For information write to: PO Box 479, Newcastle - under - Lyme, Staffordshire, ST5 1BP, UK.

21. September
Rob entered the official UK Charts with South Of The Border at No 33 today.

22. September
Due to "unknown circumstances" Rob couldn't be in the chat room of Capital Radio today.

But here's a review of his forthcoming album by the man himself:

Lazy Days: A song about that time between being happy and drunk and getting a headache. Everything is a bit dreamy and pleasant.

Life Thru A Lens: This one's about showbiz hangers - on - and I've met a few.

Ego A Go Go:Wrote the lyrics for this when I was still in Take That. I know there's a possibility of a reunion but I can't lie - it's about one of the boys... I love it.

Angles: The first slow one on the album. It was written with my Aunty Jo and Grandad Williams in mind. They are no longer with us. I believe you have guardian angles and Auntie Jo and my grandad are looking after me.

South Of The Border: The new single written when I was sitting in Stoke - On - Trent station waiting to come back to London around Christmas time. I was having a very tough time.

Old Before I Die: The first and last song I will ever write with Desmond Child who has worked with a whole load of stars and made a whole lot of money. When we'd finished it we were sitting in his pool in Miami when he turned to me and said:"Do you like this house? You helped me pay for it!" He ruined it all for me and I'll never work with him again. I still love the song though. It's very anthemic.

One Of God's Better People: A tribute to the most important person in my life - my mum Jan. I sang it to her recently and she broke down. I think that meant she liked it.

Let Me Entertain You: Camp rock opera. Really mad track with touches of my mate Elton John's Pinball Wizard.

Killin Me: Written when I was down and having a tough time with the drink and drugs. I was sober when I wrote it though!

Clean: I was completely out of it when I wrote this. It reminds me of how I used to be and that I wasn't slumped in a corner. Sometimes I was actually very funny.

Baby Girl Window: Written for my friend Sam Beckinsale about her dad Richard who died when she was 12. Whenever his name is mentioned she smiles. This is me telling Sam I bet her dad is watching her and is proud.

29. September
Life Thru A Lens is out today and I saw a very interesting Chart prediction for the weekend: Rob on No 2, with Elton John following at No 3 and The Verve at No 4!
Now that would be quite a good job with THAT competition around, wouldn't it?!

There's gonna be an Official Robbie Williams Website on http://www.robbiewilliams.co.uk from October 6th so bookmark it now!

30. September
Rob performed an hilarious Sex Pistols-style version of Take That's Back For Good during a Paris warm-up for his forthcoming British tour.
He took the stage in a T-shirt bearing the slogan "So Sue Me."

October

6. October
Rob entered the official UK album charts at No 11 with his debut solo album
"Life Thru A Lens".

Congratulations, Rob!!

28. October
I am back from holidays and Rob's in for a break during his European tour. He got back to London last night, looking tired but happy.
His album "Life Thru A Lens" droped to number 26 in its second week and is now already out of the entire Top 40. But his tour is a full success.

The Sun announced today that the Princess Diana Concert Of Hope is going ahead.
On Sunday a newspaper wrote that the concert had been axed but Gary and Rob are definitely going to take part.
The concert will take place on December 7th at Battersea Power Station in south London. Ticket are £25 plus £2 booking fee.

November

09. November
Right after the MTV Europe Music Awards on November 6th Rob continued his tour in Amsterdam the next day. He'll finish his European tour on November 27th in Madrid, Spain.

December holds a new single. Angels, taken from his album will be in an interesting competion with some other songs which are also up for the Christmas No 1.

17. November
News from the tour just in: The concert in Geneva on 19th November had to be cancelled and Madrid is being rescheduled due to venue changing of ownership.

Also, 1st December has been confirmed as the release date of Rob's next single, Angels.
You can watch him perform "Angels" the following days:

  • 28th November, TFI Friday

  • 3rd December, National Lottery

    20. November
The "Evening Standard" reported today that Rob is facing a £90,000 bill after losing the court battle with his ex-manager Nigel Martin-Smith.

    21. November
This is the verdict: Rob was ordered to hand over £90,000 immediately to former Manager Nigel Martin-Smith.
Rob must also pay him a fifth of his royalties to February 2006 -estimated at £500,000- plus legal cost of another £500,000.
The High Court judge ordered an inquiry to assess how much more commision Rob should pay after breaking his management deal with Nigel.
Last night Rob was travelling to Italy for a concert in Florence today and was unavailable for comment.
But his record company Chrysalis said:"This is just the first step in a long legal process and we will be appealing."

    25. November
After being ordered to pay £500,000 to former Take That boss Nigel Martin-Smith Rob is facing another financial nightmare - from TWO former managers who have announced that they will also be taking him to court next year...
Tim Abbot, who looked after Rob at the start of his solo career, claims he's owed £100,000 in expenses plus more money for breaking a three-album contract. And Kevin Kisella, who advised him when he quit Take That two years ago, says he's owed £120,000!
