7/29/98 CENTRAL FLORIDA FAIRGROUNDS, ORLANDO:
My friends and I arrived at the show in Orlando around eleven in the
morning... unfortunately the festival started at eleven. As we got out
of my car and started to walk towards the fairgrounds... I heard a
familiar sound. Although this sound usually was a sound that made me
happy, it filled my heart with terror as I heard it in the distance. It
was a didjeridu! Fuck! Incubus was the VERY first band to play in
Orlando, and I was missing their preformance!
We rushed to the gates only to be further disheartened by a huge line
that lead to the entrance. The didjeridu was silenced, only to be
followed by an onslaught of record scratches! Shit!!!!! "This sucks!" I
shouted out loud. These scratches were not familiar to me however. These
were the turntablisms of DJ Kilmore, Incubus' new DJ. I was very
impressed, even though I was still stuck in the torturous line. The
scratches became more familiar as the guitars kicked in and their first
song had begun... "Redefine". Brandon's voice was not far perfect as he
belted out the chorus: "I'm sick of painting black and white!..."
The band continued to play as the line shortened. Not a single song from
"Enjoy Incubus" was played. I guess the band was mainly trying to
promote the new album as they toured with Ozzy n' Co.
The guard at the gate ripped my ticket, when I immediately ran up to the
second stage to join the small crowd that had come to watch Incubus
play. I inched my way up to the front as they finished up playing
"Calgone".
As Brandon strapped on his "bongo drum", he walked up to the mic to
announce that this would be their last song. "At this I'll get to hear
my favorite Incubus song", I thought to my self as Brandon began to play
the familiar drum beat. "Newskin" would be their final song.
I was pleased to later find out that the band would be signing
autographs and greeting fans at the "Spawn Tent" later in the day. More
than happy to miss Megadeth's preformance, I wandered over to the
Immortal Records sponsered booth to talk to the band. Dirk Lance, the
bassist, was playing an acoustic guitar as he waited for his fellow
band-mates to join him in the tent.
"Man!" Brandon exclaimed as the remainder of the band entered the less
than roomy tent, "It's like a prison cell in here!".
I complimented Brandon on their preformance and asked him a few
questions:
(These weren't Brandon's exact words, I didn't have a pen or paper)
Me: Who's the guy on the cover of both your CDs?
Br: I dunno. I found a bunch of picture of him in my garage.
Me: Are you guys gonna come back to Florida any time soon?
Br: Yeah. We should be back in October when we headline a tour with
System of a Down.
Me: Who's your new DJ?
Br: Kilmore.
Then I preceded to ask Mike Einziger a few questions:
Me: Do you still play PRS guitars? I heard a roumor that you are now
playing Ibanez as well.
Mike: No, I only play PRS.
Me: Where can I find "Fungus Amoungus"?
Mike: You can't. It's dead. You won't find it anywhere.
The band was extremely friendly, which I found to be VERY suprising....
especially after meeting Limp Bizkit the day before at an instore
appearance at "Peaches Music" in Orlando. Fred has gotten a mighty big
head as a result of LB's popularity.
Brandon and Jose (Incubus' drummer), played "bongo drums" with Soulfly
during a song. Jose also made a suprise appearance during Limp Bizkit's
set by popping out of the giant toilet LB had on stage and sitting on
the giant toilet seat to watch the crowd and the preformance.
7/30/98 CORAL SKY AMPHITHEATRE, WEST PALM BEACH (The following day):
I wasn't about to miss a thing this time! We got to the show an hour
before the gates even opened! This was not necessary, however, because
Incubus was playing the main stage and would not begin for another two
hours. We had seats this time, and in prime view to see Incubus play.
The band acted as their own roadies as they began to set up for the
preformance. DJ Kilmore fooled around with his turntables as they waited
for the time to play. Mike tested out his guitar effects, and Brandon
made sure his drum was hooked up correctly. Apparently Brandon has some
kind of effect on his drum so when he strikes the middle of it, it lets
out some thick-ass bass! I think I enjoyed watching the band warm-up,
almost as much as watching them play!
I don't remember the order in which they played their songs, but here is
what they played (out of order): Redefine, Vitamin, New Skin, Glass, A
Certain Shade of Green, Calgone, and one or two others...
They played well, but the DJ could not be heard at all this time. Mike
had to make up for the lack of scratches by playing some funky improv
guitar shit. The crowd was far from enthousiastic about the preformance
even though I thought they were great. I guess they forgot to play "Iron
Man".
Again they singed autographs at the Spawn tent.
"You guys deserved much more of a response from the crowd than what you
got!," I told them.
"It's cool," said Brandon. "I thouht it went pretty well."
I asked Kilmore what happened with the turntables. I told him how I
could hardly hear them.
"That sucks!" exclaimed Brandon. "We got a new sound guy, and I guess
something got screwed up."
I asked Jose how come he kept popping out of Limp Bizkit's giant toilet
(he did the same thing when they played Stuck in West Palm).
"It's a good view," he said.
This time I got a poster signed and picked up a face mask featuring the
legendary mustached mystic.
If you read this whole thing... you either must be a big fan, or really
bored.

Enjoy Incubus
This album is so phukin fantastic! Every single song is amazing! My
favorite Incubus song is on this album and is called "Version". In
fact, it's one of my all-time favorite songs. Anyway the songs on
"Enjoy Incubus" have great vocals and phat guitar and just sound so
perfect. I definitly recommend this album if you like
groovy-rhythmic-heavy music.

Enjoy Incubus 1996 Sony/Epic release
Their first major label release is full of energy and rythem. Prevelant
Bass on all the songs is the real driving force behind the sound of the
band. Guitars that range from screaming in the chorus to a light funk or
ska pull off style through the verse. My favotite songs on this album are
"Take me to your leader" and "Version". A great use of the wheels of
steel
but I would like them to get a little more scratch happy. Vocals are
exceellent on all songs and the faster rapping is just as good. The lyrics
are cryptic at best but that's why they but them in the liner. I thought I
knew exactly what they were saying until I examined the liner notes, man I
wasn't even close. If you've got the album or are going to buy it keep a
look out for the extra throw-ins at the end of "You will be a hot dancer"
"version" and "Hilikus". Hilarious.

S.C.I.E.N.C.E.
This album is totally amazing too just like "Enjoy Incubus"! All the
songs are kick-ass!! My favorite songs off "S.C.I.E.N.C.E." are
Vitamin, New Skin, A Certain Shade Of Green, and Favorite Things, but
all the songs rule! This album is just as groovy-rhythmically-heavy as "Enjoy
Incubus" and
the thing that's so cool is Incubus has it's own style and sound.
I recommend this album to anyone who likes 'awesome' music! :)

Everything is improved on from Enjoy Incubus. First of all the Bass
sound so much better because of I'm sure a better recording, still just as
driving as on the first album. The guitars this time around arn't quite as
light and I think that takes up a lot more space than on the first album.
To tell you the truth the guitars seem a little tone down in the way of
style but are beefed up in the way of muscle and sound. Good use of the
turntables in the album but there are some songs where they are
non-exsistant, and I think that's a real tradgidy. The Vocals are still as
good as ever but the biggist improvement are the lyrics. Much more
pierceing and controversial than on the first album. Favorite songs are
Vitamin, New Skin, A Certain Shade of Green, and Nebula. Summer Romance is
a great jazz song and Nebula gives a bow down to the punk element in the
band. The last four songs are very different and take a little getting used
to but are just as good as all of the "conventional" rock songs, for the
first 8 tracks. Magic Medicine is a great Drum and Bass song and good for
dance. As always keep a listen for the extras on the end of track 12, my
favorite is the Karate Kid and Crazy Shit one that is just made with a
certain Casio keyboard. You say Bitch into it and get the exact same song
less the "break it down".
