"The year was 1978, the place was Huntington Beach, the band was The Crowd," raves superfan Carl Smith on a site dedicated to The Crowd, which he calls "Orange County's original hard- core band."
"Nothing would ever be the same."
They rocked backyard parties in the late 1970s and L.A. clubs in the '80s. They reportedly serenaded legendary comedian John Belushi the day before he died of a drug overdose. They epitomized the era of punk.
"They never got the recognition that some of their less-talented peers got," Smith said last week. "The Crowd is still playing small bars with like 50 people."
Look for the band's history, its discography and a scrapbook on the site, dubbed Beach Boulevard after one of the band's better-known albums.
Also look for a link to Posh Boy, the band's record label, known mostly for independent releases from groups with names such as Agent Orange and L Gleaming Spires.
And then there are the legends -- maybe myth, maybe not:
That rocker Joan Jett was a "big early fan."
That one band member also played with a band that once played with No Doubt.
That six months after the band was formed, they were headlining at the famed Whiskey-A-Go-Go.
The band might not be a household legend, but since the site went online last May, it has attracted fans from Slovenia, Finland -- even United Arab Emirates.
