I make no guarantee as to the accuracy of information
on these pages, But here is Anorak's explanation of how he came up with
the rankings: "The formula is a simple one in which in any given week,
the number of points for the No.1 are double the points for No.2, triple
the points for No.3 etc. Thus a record spending one week at No.20 will
get the same amount of points as a record spending two weeks at No.40.
The value 40320 points was chosen for #1 as it allows all positions in
the Top Ten to score whole numbers of points." Hence, the Scoring for each
week would look like this:
Pos | Points | Pos | Points | Pos | Points | Pos | Points |
#1 | 40320 | 11 | 3665 | 21 | 1920 | 31 | 1301 |
#2 | 20160 | 12 | 3360 | 22 | 1833 | 32 | 1260 |
#3 | 13440 | 13 | 3102 | 23 | 1753 | 33 | 1222 |
#4 | 10080 | 14 | 2880 | 24 | 1680 | 34 | 1186 |
#5 | 8064 | 15 | 2688 | 25 | 1613 | 35 | 1152 |
#6 | 6720 | 16 | 2520 | 26 | 1551 | 36 | 1120 |
#7 | 5760 | 17 | 2372 | 27 | 1493 | 37 | 1090 |
#8 | 5040 | 18 | 2240 | 28 | 1440 | 38 | 1061 |
#9 | 4480 | 19 | 2122 | 29 | 1390 | 39 | 1034 |
#10 | 4032 | 20 | 2016 | 30 | 1344 | 40 | 1008 |
As a personal note, while I don't think this method
would translate well to North American charts, where songs tend to have
a longer chart life, it's probably reasonable for the the more volatile
UK Charts. More charts as soon as I can get 'em.
1990 | 1991 | 1992 | 1993 | 1994 |
1995 | 1996 | 1997 | 1998 | 1999 |
All 90's: 1-500 | All 90's: 501-1000 |
If you enjoy chart trivia, you may want to vist my own website, RockGolf, The World-Wide Pop Music Game. Each week there's one pop music question where the answer is a song title or artist name. But there are several correct answers. The trick is to try to find answer that has the lowest combination of chart peak and duplications.
