RAY RUSSELL

Biography

Bands/Discography:

Solo albums: Library albums: Incredible, veteran and very prolific guitarist, he can play any style (you just have to take a look especially to his sessions page to see how many different styles he can play), although I'd say his best skills are on the jazz/fusion camp.

JOHN BARRY SEVEN

This was a r&b combo led by famous soundtrack composer John Barry. In October 1963, Ray joins the band:

John Barry
+
Tony Ashton (vocals, keyboards)
Ray Russell (guitar)
Ray Styles (bass)
Terry Childs (sax)
Bob Downes (sax)
Alan Bown (trumpet)
Bobby Graham (drums)
I don't know if there is any record made with this lineup (I guess so), as the band changed members very soon. Anybody knows?

GEORGIE FAME & THE BLUE FLAMES

Ray also played as lead guitarist with Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames, but I can't find info about it. Help, please!

MIKE GIBBS (BAND)

Avant-garde composer, Mike Gibbs has always used superb musicians in his albums and bands, mostly from the British free jazz scene. Ray plays in his self-titled album, Mike Gibbs, recorded from September to December 1969, with a big ensemble, featuring Chris Spedding (guitar), Ray Russell (guitar), Phil Lee (guitar), Jack Bruce (bass), Brian Odgers (bass), Henry Lowther (trumpet), Derek Watkins (trumpet), Kenny Wheeler (trumpet), Chris Pyne (trombone), John Surman (reeds), Tony Roberts (reeds), Alan Skidmore (reeds), Ray Warleigh (reeds), Barbara Thompson (reeds), Mick Pyne (keyboards), John Marshall (drums), Tony Oxley (drums), Frank Ricotti (percussion).

In January 1970, this was the great lineup for gigs:

Mike Gibbs (conductor)
Ray Russell (guitar)
Chris Spedding (guitar)
Jack Bruce (bass)
Henry Lowther (trumpet)
Chris Pyne (trombone)
Alan Skidmore (sax)
John Marshall (drums)
And I don't know more lineups, as assorted info is very difficult to compile. Any help, please?

ROCK WORKSHOP

This was a strange project, a sort of loose agrupation, where different musicians would join for the albums. I don't know if it was just a studio project, or if they also played concerts. The first album was recorded in 1970 by Ray's usual mates, plus the great Alex Harvey on vocals:

Ray Russell (guitar)
Alex Harvey (vocals)
Alan Greed (vocals, keyboards)
Daryl Runswick (bass)
Brian Miller (keyboards)
Laurie Baker (keyboards)
Harry Beckett (trumpet)
Bud Parkes (trumpet)
Tony Roberts (sax)
Bob Downes (sax)
Derek Wadsworth (trombone)
Alan Rushton (drums)
Robin Jones (percussion)
The album was titled Rock Workshop.

Their second (and last album) was called The very last time, with these musicians:

Ray Russell (guitar)
Alan Greed (vocals, keyboards)
Daryl Runswick (bass)
Brian Miller (keyboards)
Harry Beckett (trumpet)
Bud Parkes (trumpet)
Tony Roberts (sax)
Bob Downes (sax)
Derek Wadsworth (trombone)
Alan Rushton (drums)
Tony Uter (percussion)

NUCLEUS

Another free-jazz combo, led by trumpet player Ian Carr. In May 1971, Chris Spedding leaves the band, and Ray Russell gets the job:

Ian Carr (trumpet)
Ray Russell (guitar)
Roy Babbington (bass)
John Marshall (drums)
+ others unknown to me. Help!
And I don't know more lineups, as again, this info is very difficult to compile. Any help, please?

RUNNING MAN

This band was formed by Ray Russell, with some of his friends, around 1972:

Ray Russell (guitar)
Alan Greed (vocals, bass, keyboards)
Gary Windo (sax)
Harry Beckett (trumpet)
Alan Rushton (drums)
They released a self-titled album, Running Man. Finally, after almost 30 years, it has been recently reissued on CD.

The band soon turned into Gary Windo Quartet.

MOUSE

Another project. This was 1973:

Ray Russell (guitar)
Al Clare (vocals, keyboards)
Jeff Watts (bass)
Alan Rushton (drums)
They only released an album, Lady killer,

CHOPYN
This band was formed in 1974 by Ann Odell and Ray. It marked the first chance for a young drummer who was to become one of the best in music scene, Simon Phillips.
Denny McCaffrey (vocals)
Ray Russell (guitar)
Klyde McMullin (bass)
Ann Odell (keyboards)
Simon Phillips (drums)
They released just one album, Grand Slam, and they split after having big problems with management.

HAROLD BECKETT'S JOY UNLIMITED

Great trumpet player Harold Beckett (also known as Harry Beckett), and Ray Russell had played in several albums together. The album called Joy Unlimited was recorded by:

Harold Beckett (trumpet, flugelhorn)
Ray Russell (guitar)
Daryl Runswick (bass)
Brian Miller (keyboards)
Nigel Morris (drums)
Marty David (percussion)
But, for live concerts, this was another lineup: Harry Beckett (trumpet, flugelhorn)
Ray Russell (guitar)
Daryl Runswick (bass)
Brian Miller (keyboards)
John Webb (drums)
Robin Jones (percussion)
They recorded a live album in November 1975, called Memories of Bacares.

ROCK FOLLIES

In 1975, Andy Mackay (from Roxy Music) is asked to compose the music for a TV series, "Rock follies", about a female trio (one of the singers was the marvellous Julie Covington). Andy composed the music, but a stable band was formed to play all the music as well as appearing in the series. This band for the first season was:

Ray Russell (guitar)
Tony Stevens (bass)
Brian Chatton (keyboards)
Peter Van Hooke (drums)
+
Àndy Mackay (sax)
An album was released from those performances, called Rock follies.

STACKRIDGE

In 1976, while the band was touring promoting their album Mr. Mick (rumour has it about Ray playing some guitar parts on it), his friend Pete Van Hooke (the drummer in the band) suggests Ray to join them for the live lineup, thus Andrew Davis being able to concentrate on keyboards:

Andrew Cresswell-Davis (vocals, keyboards)
Ray Russell (guitar)
Keith Gemmell (flute, sax)
Jim 'Crun' Walter (bass)
Michael 'Mutter' Slater (vocals, flute)
Pete Van Hooke (drums)
The band folded soon after the tour finished.
(I have a question. Was Dave Lawson also in this lineup, or had he left the band yet?)

SMITH & D'ABO

This was a duo formed by Mike D'Abo and Mike Smith. Mike D'Abo was a member of Manfred Mann. He also appears with Chris in the 'Jesus Christ Superstar' album, playing King Herod role. Mike Smith was the vocalist for 60s band Dave Clark Five. They recorded a very interesting self-titled album, Smith & D'Abo, with great musicians: Ray Russell (guitar), Mo Foster (bass), Dave Markee (bass), Chris Mercer (sax), Jack Lancaster (sax), Malcolm Griffiths (trombone), Barry De Souza (drums), among others.

They also toured to promote the album, with these musicians:

Mike D'Abo (vocals, keyboards)
Mike Smith (vocals, keyboards)
Ray Russell (guitar)
Mo Foster (bass)
Barry De Souza (drums)
They finished touring in November 1976. After that, Smith and D'Abo went separate ways.

Great news! The album has finally been released on CD!!

The second season of the show, retitled Rock Follies of 1977, saw a slightly different lineup:

Ray Russell (guitar)
Tony Stevens (bass)
Chris Parren (keyboards)
Peter Van Hooke (drums)
+
Àndy Mackay (sax)
Another album was released too, Rock Follies of 77. The CD reissue has a bonus track.

(FRANKIE MILLER'S) FULL HOUSE

Frankie Miller is a great Scottish singer. In March 1978, Ray replaces Micky Moody in the band:

They released an album, Double trouble (with help by Ian Gomm on guitar, and backing vocals by Steven Tyler from Aerosmith, Richie Supa, Eric Troyer and Lani Groves), as well as toured only during March 1978 (Ray was replaced in May 1978 by a great musician: Hughie Burns).

ALEKSANDER JOHN

In 1979, we find Ray playing for this artist:

There's a track appearing in a collective live album, Greenbelt live!, recorded at the Greenbelt Festival in Odell, Bedforshire, during August 1979. The track appearing is a live rendition of Bittersweet song. Other artists and musicians appearing there: Bryn Haworth (with Alan 'Bam' King, Tex Comer), Giantkiller, Lamb, Cliff Richard (with Snowy White, Mike Moran, Graham Jarvis, Tony Rivers, Stu Calver, John Perry), Kainos, Garth Hewitt, Vatten, Randy Stonehill, and Larry Norman.

I'm still checking Ray's appearances in several of Aleksander albums.

THE SECRET POLICE

In 1981, several musicians and actors (from Monty Python) arranged to play 4 concerts in benefit of Amnesty International. There were great performers there, like Jeff Beck & Eric Clapton (playing together!!), Phil Collins, Sting (his first solo appearance, he still was in The Police), Donovan, Bob Geldof, etc.

Pete Townshend, although appearing in the video, was not on that year (1981)'s show, but the previous one 'The Secret Policeman's Ball'.

The grand finale of these shows consisted of a massive jam playing Dylan's "I shall be released". The unusual lineup of this band was (be ready!):

As I've said, there is also a video from that concert, but the tracks are slightly different. At least in my copy, the Beck/Clapton appearance is reduced to 2 songs, and Pete Townshend appears here, with a performance from 1980.

The setlist for the live album is: Sting (2 tracks), Jeff Beck & Eric Clapton (3 tracks), Bob Geldof (1 track), Phil Collins with Daryl Stuermer (2 tracks), Donovan with Danny Thompson (2 tracks), the all-star band (1 track).

THE BRITISH ORCHESTRA

This was a huge lineup assembled by Gil Evans:

Gil Evans (piano)

John Taylor (keyboards)
Henry Lowther (trumpet)
Guy Barker (trumpet)
Miles Evans (trumpet)
Malcolm Griffiths (trombone)

Chris Hunter (sax, flute)
Stan Sulzmann (sax, flute)

RMS

The name of the band stands for the first letters of Ray, Mo & Simon:

Ray Russell (guitar)
Mo Foster (bass)
Simon Phillips (drums)
What a powerful team!

This was the wonderful lineup as they appeared at Montreux Festival on July 1983:

Ray Russell (guitar)
Mo Foster (bass)
Mark Isham (trumpet, keyboards)
Henry Lowther (trumpet, flute)
Malcolm Griffiths (trombone)
Ronnie Aspery (sax)
Simon Phillips (drums)
After their set, they also played backing Gil Evans that same night: Gil Evans (piano)
Ray Russell (guitar)
Mo Foster (bass)
Mark Isham (trumpet, keyboards)
Henry Lowther (trumpet, flute)
Malcolm Griffiths (trombone)
Ronnie Aspery (sax)
Simon Phillips (drums)
The set included a lenghty rendition of my Jimi Hendrix favourite, 'Little wing'. This concert was later released, credited to Gil Evans with RMS, under the title Take me to the sun, assembled with another studio track recorded in 1988, also featuring Ray Russell.

Sometimes (probably when Simon is not available), Gary Husband played with RMS from time to time:

Ray Russell (guitar)
Mo Foster (bass)
Gary Husband (drums)

"TIME"

In April 1986, we can find Ray playing in the musical Time, starring Cliff Richard. This was the original cast:

An album was released from the musical in 1986, although with different members, The album features Cliff Richard, Freddie Mercury, Leo Sayer, Julian Lennon, Ashford & Simpson, Murray Head, Chris Thompson, Miriam Stockley, among others. Ray Russell is also featured on it, along with Mike Moran (keyboards), Brett Morgan (drums), etc.

After some time, the musical carried on with David Cassidy instead of Cliff Richard, but I guess that's when maybe Ray left too.

RAY RUSSELL BAND

For his album A table near the band, he assembled a superb lineup:

Ray Russell (guitar)
Mo Foster (bass)
Tommy Eyre (keyboards)
Tony Hymas (keyboards)
Iain Ballamy (sax)
Stuart Brookes (trumpet)
Tony Roberts (clarinet, sax)
Simon Phillips (drums)
He was invited to play at the Montreux Jazz Festival in July 1988. He played with a slightly different lineup: Ray Russell (guitar)
Mo Foster (bass)
Tommy Eyre (keyboards)
Tony Hymas (keyboards)
Jeff Daly (sax)
Stuart Brookes (trumpet)
Greg Knowles (percussion)
Simon Phillips (drums)
This concert was recorded, and sometime later, it appeared a collective live album, appropiately called Live at the Montreux Jazz Festival. I'm happy of having got it, as it seems it's a hard to find item, as it was released by B&W (the loudspeakers brand) own label.

This was the name of Ray's band, assembled to play in Montreux Jazz Festival in 1989.

Ray Russell (guitar)
Scarlet Rivera (violin)
Dill Katz (bass)
Tony Roberts (sax)
Iain Ballamy (sax)
As it happened with the 1998 edition of the festival, this one also saw how a collective live album was released, but sadly I haven't been able to find it myself, so I can't explain details about it. Other bands featured are The Festa Group and The Hungarian Bop-Art Orchestra.

Ray Russell (guitar)
Anthony Jackson (bass)
Tony Roberts (sax)
Simon Phillips (drums)

SIMON PHILLIPS (BAND)

Always the best of friends, Ray and Simon kept on playing together, this time under Simon's leadership. They released Symbiosis, recorded with Ray Russell (guitar), Jimmy Johnson (bass), John Pena (bass), Mike Porcaro (bass), Mitchell Forman (keyboards), Wendell Brooks (sax), Sheila E. (percussion), Chris Trujillo (percussion), as well as Simon Phillips (drums), of course.

The lineup for the 1997 tour was:

Ray Russell (guitar)
Jimmy Earl (bass)
Jeff Babko (keyboards)
Wendell Brooks (sax)
Simon Phillips (drums)
But due to problems with dates, Ray is not able to play the whole of the tour promoting the album, where he's replaced by the mighty Andy Timmons.

After the tour, Simon started recording a new album, Another lifetime, again featuring Ray. The album was recorded with this lineup:

Ray Russell (guitar)
Andy Timmons (guitar)
Anthony Jackson (bass)
Jeff Babko (keyboards)
Wendell Brooks (sax)
Peter Michael Escovedo (percussion)
Simon Phillips (drums)
A great album, with intrincate playing. It contains a tribute track (Another lifetime, co-written by Ray and Simon) to drummer Tony Williams, who died while the album was being recorded. The producers are Ray and Simon too.

The Japanese edition contains two bonus live tracks (taken from their 1996 tour), but sadly, this is not the edition I have, so I can't know if Ray is featured there (I don't think so, anyway).

There are also two instructional videos by Simon Phillips, with this trio lineup:

Ray Russell (guitar)
Anthony Jackson (bass)
Simon Phillips (drums)
The titles are Simon Phillips and Simon Phillips returns.

+ others unknown to me. Help!
They recorded the album Time to think inside a church (due to fantastic acoustic conditions), during two days in July 1999.
