Kevin watched as Averi put her sunglasses on and lay down. He too put on his sunglasses and turned towards the water. He watched as Brian kissed Leighanne passionately.
I want that with Averi. Kevin thought.
Kevin sat watching all the couples on the beach. He was silently hoping that him and Averi would be like that someday.
Howie came up to the blanket and started to dry himself off. He sat down next to Kevin.
"Hey Howie."
"Hi Kev. Whatcha up to?"
"Oh nothing," Kevin sighed.
"You sound like you're not having fun."
"No, I'm having fun. I'm just nervous that Averi doesn't like me."
"How could you even think something like that Kevin? I watched you guys when you were in the water. She likes you Kevin, believe me."
"Are you sure Howie?"
"I'm positive."

Averi pulled out her Jane magazine. She looked through it occasionally glancing over at Kevin and Howie. Averi smiled and turned back to her magazine.
"I'm going to get some ice cream. Do either of you want to come?" Howie asked.
Averi sat up at the mention of ice cream.
"Ice cream?"
"That's what I said. You want to come?"
"Yeah, I love ice cream."
"Ok. Are you coming Kevin?"
"No, I think I'll stay here. I might go back in the water."
"Ok. Let's go." Howie said turning to Averi.
Averi smiled at Kevin and started to follow Howie. They got to the ice cream stand and stood in line.
"What are you getting Averi?" Howie asked.
"I'm getting orange, that's the best."
Howie scrunched his nose.
"I think I'll stick with my chocolate."
"You're boring Howie."
"So I've been told. Chocolate's good though."
"Chocolate's good, but boring. I like orange."
Howie laughed. They stepped up to the counter and ordered. They got their ice cream cones and started walking back to the blankets.
