Prague 17. 05. 2002
I remember it absolutely clearly. It was 26 February and I received a message from my friend: "Interkoncerts has just confirmed a concert in the Czech Republic. 17 May 2002, Prague." I couldn't believe my eyes!!! After so many months of fighting against Interkoncerts we managed it. Few days later I had tickets...
Friday, 17 May 2002, beautiful sunny and warm day! I left for Prague with my parents at about 8 o'clock. At 12 o'clock we were in Prague and... we forgot a map, luckily the mobiles exist :) I get off the car, they went shopping and I found my best friend Renka. We were sitting in the grass and talking. Hey, so many disgusting beetles :(. Poor people who had slept there.
Some minutes later the Kellys went taking photos in front of their bus :). Angelo made funny poses. No comment :) At 15 (?) o'clock Joey went cycling (after a long phone call) and he passed us by. He was very interested in girls with beer :). An hour later our third friend Petty arrived. So we were complete. We went for the numbers (246, 247) and came to the end of the row. 18 o'clock... Angelo was still drumming like a fool. Then we finally got into the hall... well, I forgot to say that instructions had been given: 18:55 we'll sing An angel; everybody must have a paper heart; we'll call "Thank you" instead of "Zugabe".
At about 18:45 Jimmy appeared on the stage and told people to go "one meter back" because they were totally squeezed. Even after his sentence that it wasn't really nice to see fainting people nothing happened. He said: "Tomorrow it will be in the newspapers: Crash at the Kelly Family!" He started to be angry (and me too). He tried to say it in three languages (English, German, French) but no result. Jimmy: "Do you understand?" People: "Yes." Jimmy: "So go one meter back!!!"... nothing :(. So he started singing a song which name I don't know. Then he sang Walk into the paradise and then Wastin' all my time... and we looked at watch. When he finished this song, it was 18:53. I was worried that we wouldn't be able to sing An angel. And when he started Cover the road, it was clear that our singing was impossible. Jimmy tried once more his sentence about "going one meter back" but when he saw that people didn't want to move, he said: "OK, we'll be here in about 3 minutes."
And then it started – after 3 years, 5 months and 6 days they were again in the Czech Republic live!!! First tones of drums sounded like Alle Kinder brauchen Freunde, but some seconds later Angelo realized the first song should have been Joey's Special girl :). From the first second it was clear that such a great atmosphere hadn't been in concert for a very long time. EVERY person (even though there was a terrible air in the hall, horribly warm weather, not enough place) was dancing, singing, clapping hands – beautiful view :).
The next song was I feel love. Paddy: "Hello everybody, we're happy to be back in the Czech Republiiic. How's everybody in Prague tonight? Come on, let me see your hands in the air!" Then Paddy and Angelo sang Can't help falling in love and Paddy's No woman no cry. The view of squeezed people made his eyes even more sad. Maite said: "The next song is about a girl named Audrey, ok?" After this one Patricia came and said she was very happy to be back in the Czech Republic and that we had a beautiful city and country. She thanked us for our faithfulness and sang No one but you for her Denis :). Patrick's flute solo wasn't quite good, but I must say that it wasn't only his fault – the hall didn't have good acoustics and people were noisy. This one was followed by Jimmy's So many troubles – in the middle of this song he said: "We are not stars. You are not fans. We are all people. Let's celebrate!" And then he started the first check of our voices. Yeah, Czech Republic is the best :). Nobody sings as loud as we do.
In Paddy's face I could see that he hadn't expected such a hot weather and when he finished singing, he turned up his jeans and sleeves. Then Angelo left his drums (people were enthusiastic:)) and sang New morals (Human race). The atmosphere became better and better... And then the Kelly-girls came and sang a beautiful beginning of Every baby (Birdies on my window) – ooooh:) and then Maite sang rest of the song. Joey sang his Another world with Why why why. Then Maite came again and said: "Are you having fun? But these people aren't having fun 'cause they're squashed. Go one meter back!" People didn't move :(. Then we had to repeat her sounds. It was a preparation for History, because in the middle of this song we had to sing these hardly learnt sounds:). Maite was really satisfied with such a talented audience. I heard History for the first time and I fell in love with it – sounds like two songs in one :).
Then came Jimmy and sang What's a matter you people. It's hard to sing with him because he often changes the lyrics:). Then he introduced Joey and his True love. Maite went on with I wanna be loved and So many things. Each person sang with her. But when she wanted boys to sing, it was very weak! Maite: "I like shy guys." And she asked: "Who wants to come to the stage?" I saw one boy... he was jumping like a kangaroo and called: "Meeeeeeeee." I had to laugh. She chose two boys (one of them was the one who had jumped :)) and wanted them to repeat what she sang. First attempt... they were laughing and didn't want to sing. Second attempt... yeah, they sang but... ehm... terrible isn't the right word :). Kellys laughed and the whole hall, too. Then Maite told the boys: "You'll make the girls sing and I'll make the boys sing, ok?" They didn't understand her but after explaining with hands and legs they understood. You should have seen it. The hall was singing like a fool :). Maite said to her family something like: "Hey, we can go to a pub, they can sing without us. Noooo, this is a concert of the Kelly Family, not of Maite's guests, haha."
Of course Paddy couldn't miss the chance to hear our voices. And then he sang Fell in love with an alien – the biggest test of our voices. Paddy divided the audience into the "left side" and "right side" and checked who was better :). And one of his last sentences was: "I'm in love with the Czech Republic." Yeah, big applause for him :). Then came Joey and sang The wolf (Paddy disappeared even though he was supposed to sing a part of this song) followed by Angelo's mini Drum solo. If he had drummed all the 5 minutes like in winter, he would have died because of hot air. Then a big surprise for me: Big mouth on TV, this was the first time I heard this song live. Embarrassing moment: I forgot the lyrics :). The next song was One more freaking dollar. Paddy was sitting, conducting and singing. His sad face became absolutely happy. And when he started singing We will rock you, we had to laugh. We had never seen him dancing and smiling like this before. In the end of this song he took a bottle of water, gave it to every Kelly and then they poured it over the fans in first lines.
Patricia came and sang Winnie the Pooh and then (my favorite "potato" song:)) Love music 'n' sun. Jimmy and the Kelly-crew made a train on the stage... funny guys. But what was new in this song: amazing "choreography":)). I loved it! Live version is absolutely perfect.
Jimmy came to the microphone and started singing the "unofficial hymn" Lord can you hear my prayer. Of course he wanted us to sing with him. The song was at least 10 minutes long :). When I remember how he had to beg people in Dresden or in Vienna to sing... and here it goes without any explaining or begging. It sounded beautiful. Jimmy was satisfied :). Then we could hear the first tones of Take my hand. Maite and Patrick couldn't afford shaking hands with people. Fans would die of squeeze:(. But then finally our moment came... when they finished this song, we screamed "thank you". Kellys were truly touched. Joey mentioned something like: "No, we thank YOU."
Paddy and Angelo came to microphones. Angelo said: "Hopefully we'll come back next year!" and then he started singing I can't help myself. We knew it was one of the last songs. When they disappeared... oh, I had never heard such stamping and calling "Kellys" before. Patrick came back and started stamping with us – laughing like a fool :). Then he sang Brother brother... after "Father, oh I love you with all my heart" he received a big applause and when he was singing "Sisters, all my sisters...", he pointed to us all. What a kind boy :). But I don't wanna know what men thought of him :).
Then all the Kellys came back and started singing Springsteen's Should I fall behind. And it was the end :(. Paddy said they would come to the Czech Republic MAYBE in August/September but we all know him. But I can't wait another 3,5 years. Czech concerts are the BEST (when I forget the squeeze) because people don't hide their feelings.
Petty went home and we (Renka and me) were waiting for our parents. Suddenly the Kelly-bus moved towards us. Everybody looked inside if there were the Kellys. They weren't there. Security started giving blocks next to the bus. So we stood there and waited. Then we saw Angelo. We thought he was going to the bus, but... mistake. He came to us and started giving autographs. He was so nice, modest, he answered all questions. He surprised me :). Renka thanked for the signature in Czech, haha. Then one girl asked Angelo: "Can I take a photo with you?" Angelo: "No, I'm working here. But you can take a photo OF me!" It was like an order for everyone (I didn't have time to ask if he really didn't mind – I would maybe find my camera... never mind), flash-lights made light like in a day. He laughed, hid his eyes and said: "I can't see anything." Then came Joey and gave us an autograph. Also people surprised me – nobody screamed, everything was absolutely OK. Yeah, times have changed... I also saw Jimmy, he went to the bus. Hey, he was cute :). But I won't forgive him his ignorance of geography (haha). He thinks there's a war in CZ and thinks that Ostrava is a part of Prague (there are 300 km between these cities), haha... Well, that happens sometimes...
The following day Kellys stayed at the hall and talked with fans. Well, when I heard this some days later, I was quite angry and sad because I stayed in Prague for the weekend, too... But when I summarize this concert, it was (and in the view of 99 % people, too) one of the best concerts I've ever been to. After long time I saw really happy Kellys (I'm talking about second part of the concert), fantastic atmosphere... and I hope it won't last 10 years (according to the words of an organizer who doesn't want Kellys here) until they came back again!
