First Boston Marathon The name that must be remembered through all of this is the name John Grahm. After being an Olympic Team Manager and experiencing the joys of the Olympics, Grahm took it upon himself to start a marathon of his own in the Boston area. Knowing that it could not be done on his own, Grahm acquired the assistance of a well-known businessman by the name of Herbert H. Holton. After debating for a long time, the two came up with the measured distance of 24.5 miles from the Irvington Oval in Boston to Metcalf's Mill in Ashland. With the course selected and awaiting its first use, the men were getting ready to take on this massive mission. The first race had come to a start and came to a finish also with one man forever establishing his name in history. This man is John J. McDermott of New York. He captured the first Boston Athletic Association Marathon in 2 hours 55 minutes and 10 seconds.
