One of the most rewarding opportunities I have had as a journalist was working with Jabber Youth News (now YOUTHINKIT.COM). Jabber's goals were: advocating for youth
providing safe, educational and creative writing workshops
being responsive to youth-at-risk
providing opportunities for youth to express their views, opinions and creativity
promoting diversity, tolerance and understanding.
The quality of work that came from these kids who ranged in ages from 9-13 was incredible, and as I sat in my co-manager/co-editor-in-chief chair looking over their stories, I quickly realized there wasn't much editing necessary. These kids were right on the money.
I also was required to add to the online magazine every once in a while. The following were my contribution to the final edition of Jabber Youth News...
LESS TV, MORE CREATIVITY -- TRUST YOURSELF BE CREATIVENETTREK 2000
DRAWING: A PASSION FOR CALGARY TEENS
B.L.A.S.T USE OF TOBACCO: STUDENTS HAVE VOICE AND CHOICE
But for heavens sake, don't just stop at my stories. The kids are where the real talent's at. Browse through the editions you see in the left hand menu and see how right I am about these kids. They were super to work with, and again I enjoyed every minute of my experience with them.
