Over six months since their last release and something special was
required to bring the band back into mass appeal. Manager Gordon
Mills had recorded his song in a Buddy Holly-ish version before passing
it on to Kidd & Co. Once done, EMI unbelievably thought that the
track could be improved and roped in session lead guitarist "Big" Jim
Sullivan (who did version 2 of "Please Don't Bring Me Down") to try out
lead guitar duties. Thankfully, any "improvements" were
deemed unnecessary, allowing Mick Green's unique talent to be justifiably heard
far and wide. The bands' economical power turned what could have
been an ordinary pop tune into a Beat Classic during the summer of 1963
when it stormed into the top five - a remarkable turn of fortune.
Just one thing - is Green's guitar subtly dual-tracked here and there? |
