As most people know, Scott left the band in May of 1998. But of course, this leaves the question on why he left. No body except him, Mark, and Tom know, and as far as I can tell that's all the people that are going to know. So here are the two rumours that people know on why Scott left. Rumour #1: He left to go to school.
Ok, he had just spent a majority of his high school years (if not all of them) touring in a band. And he wanted to go to college without having to go through the whole touring and going to school thing all over again.

Of course when he did leave, Travis learned most of all the songs that the band knew at that point and apparently played them even better than Scott did. So when they needed him, they chose Travis as a permanent replacement.

Rumour #2: He was kicked out.
This one isn't so nice as number 1. He was kicked out because he apparently had a very bad drinking problem. And no matter what the band did to help him, it didn't work. So they just decided to kick him out.

A rumour that goes with this story is that the song "Man Over Board" is about him and his drinking problem. Which if you listen to the lyrics, it does make pretty good sense with the story.
