Hi all, For those of you who are interested in what Thom's little brother gets up to in his spare time, and those of you who like Ride, here is a little review from the Zodiac last Saturday... As I predicted, things got pretty busy at the Zodiac. Me and my mate Phil spent the whole time "star spotting". I probably got a bit lost in it all though as I'd started on the Guinness at 5pm. At 9, the Unbelievable Truth took to the stage and in the fashion of Stupid Car, saw the guitarist and Mr Yorke Junior do a double act with Mr Yorke Junior crooning with his hands in his pockets and the closed eyes Thom style. Perhaps it's a family thing. Tonight he looks far more prettier than Thom despite the glasses but has that familiar solid Yorke chin. The rest of the band came on stage and we were treated to a good half hour of melancholy semi acoustic pop/folk. Fine if you like that sort of thing but I just wished they'd used another guitar now and again. No one really ever got excited but were all very appreciative of the talent we saw before us and all agreed that the Unbelievable Truth are destined for bigger things. They have years ahead of them anyway. They switched between rhythms and beats and soared with vocal excellence but they just didn't grab me. You cannot fault the Unbelievable Truth on their technical playing and songwriting ability but after a while it just gets too much. I slipped off to the bar where I felt much more at home after 6 songs and was cheered by the host of local pop stars present. Who did I see? Well, probably not many people you've heard of. There was the entire Daisies outfit, her out of Beaker, one or two less memorable faces and Phil Selway managed to put in an appearance. One or two people also mentioned that they saw Nicky Wire out of the Manic Street Preachers but this remains unconfirmed. I think the Yorke parents were there but I couldn't be sure. THEN!! Bang! A keyboard player and a drummer walk on stage, the solid swinging rhythm starts and Hurricane are underway. Yikes!! I'm still reeling. Frightened the life out of me. Everybody is swaying and transfixed with the rhythm and then Andy Bell strides on, puts down the Jack Daniels, picks up his guitar and joins in. As he sways his shoulders from side to side and fingers dance over the fret board, all I can hear in close proximity is "Fuuuuuckiin' ellll!!". If ever I felt like yelling "Yes, yes!", this would be the time. The rest of the band join the stage. The rest, as they say, is history. Pretty easy to describe: wicked foot shuffling rhythms, solid noisy guitars, heavy mangling bass and addictive but sensuous vocals. S'pose it's what you might call a good rock and roll band but with TONS OF ATTITUDE! Hurricane WILL blow your balls off (if you have them). Alex Lowe (vocals) WILL do strange things to your eyes. The bass WILL play with your soul and the guitars WILL mess with your mind. Hurricane are excellent. I couldn't hear a damn thing they were singing but that didn't matter as the music was enough to wow me. I don't know what they played or for how long but it was one of the best live bands I've seen in ages. Andy Bell is a god. Buy the album when it comes out. One small thing... Someone mentioned they sound just a wee bit like Oasis guitar wise. I think I know what they're getting at... Don't let that put you off. They won't let you... Duncan.
