Chapter 23: Terrified

The plane ride took 2 hours. August slept part of the time and listened to her CDS the other part. Unfortunately, the only CDS she had with her in her carry-on were her Hanson CDS. She would start to cry every time she heard Taylor's voice, which was a lot. Finally, after torturing herself by listening to the CD, she took the headphones off and just sat and thought.

"Ladies and Gentlemen....We should be landing at Tulsa International in about 5 minutes folks. The current time is 7:38 pm, August 14, and the current temperature is 65 degrees. Thank You for flying American Airlines, and I hope you enjoyed your flight."

August sighed and packed up her bag. She sat and stared out the window. She was home. Kind of. The plane landed, and she rushed off. Her parents were waiting patiently for her.

"Mom!! Dad!!!"
"August! Welcome home!"
"Oh! I missed you guys!"
"We missed you too honey!"
"Geez! You've gotten big mom!"
"Yea, I'm due in about 3 weeks!"
"I've been gone that long!?"
"Yea, I guess!"
"Wow!"

August and her parents went to get her stuff, and then left the airport.

"August, I'll tell you now, there's nothing in our house. The moving van doesn't get here until later. They come tomorrow, alright?"
"Ok, that's cool."

The rest of the ride was silent. August sat in the car, staring out the window. Everything started to look somewhat familiar. They were nearing the Hanson house. They turned onto the street, then drove past Hanson's house. They turned into the driveway of a house about 4 houses down opposite of the Hansons' house. It was a two story house, a light blue color.

August jumped out of the car and followed her dad up to the front door. He stuck the key in and unlocked the door. Inside was a card table with a portable TV and a phone.

"Look around. If you see a room that you like, its yours. Unless is has our suitcases in it."
"Seriously?!"
"Yea, Seriously."
"Wow! Thanks!"
"You're Welcome"

August set one of her bags down and walked around the house. She first went upstairs, she saw a room she liked, so she set her backpack on the floor. She kept looking. She didn't see any others she liked, so she walked back downstairs. As she was walking down the hall, she noticed another door. She turned the knob. It was the basement. She walked down the stairs. To her amazement, the basement was finished. There were two doors. She opened the first one. It was where the furnace, etc was. She opened the second one. It opened up to a hallway. She walked down the hallway to another door. She opened it. It was a huge room. It had a small window near the top and a set of stairs leading to a small landing.

"Whoa!" she breathed. "I Think I found my room".

She ran down the hall and up the stairs.

"Dad!" she called
"Yes?"
"I found my room! Come see!!"

As her dad walked around the corner, her smile grew bigger.

"Ok, which is it?"
"Well, I found a room in the basement. Its awesome!"
"In the basement? I never looked down there."

She rushed down the stairs with her dad in tow. She opened the first door and ran down the hall. Then she opened the second door.

"Wow! That's a nice choice! Well, this is your room!"

The two walked back down the hall and up the stairs to give the information to August's mother.

The night went on with August and her parents catching up on everything that had gone on. After about 2 hours of talking, August decided to watch some TV. She walked into what was supposed to be the kitchen, sat at the table, and turned the TV on. The first channel she looked at had the Simpsons on, she wasn't a fan of that show, so she changed it. The next channel was on commercial, as was the next one after that. Finally, she found a channel that didn't have commercials going. Unfortunately, it was CNN again. Now she had this feeling towards CNN, a negative one. CNN was the station that she found out about the plane crash that Julie had been in. There, on the screen, was another plane crash. She just sat and stared, not really watching. She was thinking about Julie, and how much she missed her. She thought back to a time when Julie had come to August's house in tears because her dad had beat her....

"Thanks for helping me out tonight August."
"I'd never let anything happen to you Julie, you know that."
"Yea, I know. You're an awesome friend. I love you Sista!"
"Love ya too. You're my best friend Julie, I could never let anything happen to you."
"And you're mine August and I'd do the same for you. We'll be friends forever....."

"Forever" August whispered and her hand touched the charm necklace that Julie had given her for her birthday.

"Forever" she whispered, her eyes filling with tears.

She shook her head to get out of the flashback. She glanced at the TV, where a bulletin had been posted on the screen. It read:

"Flight 308, from New York's NYC International to Tulsa International, crashed about an hour and a half after take off just over Nashville. It is rumored that there was a mechanical problem, and the engine died. But that has not been confirmed. There were no survivors."

August gasped. She got up from the table and sprinted to the next room, past her parents, and to her bag. She still had the first plane ticket. She dug for it, and pulled it out. She sprinted back into the kitchen, this time with her parents on her heals, trying to figure out what was wrong. She read the bulletin again, and screamed. She fell to the floor sobbing. Her dad dropped to his knees and put his arms around her. Her mom took the ticket from her hands and read over it and looked at the screen.

"Oh My God" she whispered.
"Liz, what's wrong??" asked August's father.
"John. August was supposed to be on that plane that crashed. My baby almost died!"

She carefully got down on her knees and held August tight.

"My baby. Baby, its alright. You're ok. That's all that matters."
"M..Mom...I...I...n..need...t..to...c...call..Z..Zac......r....right...right...n..now" she sobbed.
"Ok, baby, you do that. Its gonna be ok. I promise."

August went into the other room to find the number for the hotel. She found it and quickly dialed in the numbers. She waited sort-of patiently while she was connected to the Hanson's room. Taylor picked up the phone.

"Hello?"
"T..Tay?" she sobbed
"August. Why are you calling here? I thought you didn't want to talk to me ever again." he replied coldly.
"T..Tay...p..please..I...I..n..need...t..to..t..talk..t..to..Z..Zac...P...Please!"
"Why should I get him for you? What if I don't feel like it?"
"Jordan Taylor Hanson. I almost died. You could have some sympathy and given the phone to Zac, because he'll care!!!!" she screamed into the phone.

This caught Taylor off-guard. He quickly went to find Zac. He had a scared look on his face.

"Z..Zac?"
"What Tay?"
"Up, A..August is on the phone, and she's bawling, and she yelled at me by my full name to give you the phone."
"Oh no, somethings wrong"
"Here."
"Thanks Tay" he said, grabbing the receiver.

He could hear August crying on the other end.

"August?"
"Zac..." she sobbed.
"What's wrong?!"

She just cried.

"August!! Tell me what's wrong!! Please!"

She took a deep breath and tried to calm down.

"T..the...pl..plane...I...was supposed to be on crashed. No one lived. If I hadn't had a fight with Tay, I would've died. Oh god Zac. Died!"

She went off into hysterics again, and Zac dropped the phone. He screamed and fell to the floor, crying. Isaac ran in to see if Zac was ok. What he found was his little brother rolling on the floor screaming and crying with the phone next to him. He yelled for Taylor, who rushed in. He dropped to the ground to try to calm Zac down. Isaac grabbed the phone.

"Hello?!?!"
"Ike?" came a whisper in between sobs.
"Yes, who is this?" he asked. He couldn't tell because the person was crying.
"Ike, its me." she replied.
"August! What's going on?? Why is Zac crying!?"

She went off crying again, and a few seconds later, her mom came over the phone.

"Hello?"
"What's going on?!"
"Isaac......is Zac going to be alright?"
"Yes, what's going on?"
"The plane that August was to be on crashed. I don't know why she wasn't on it, but I'm relieved she wasn't. There weren't any survivors."
"Oh my god."

As Zac heard these words, it set him off again, and ent running out of the room, and out into the hotel. Taylor glanced over at Isaac, wondering if he should go after Zac. Isaac nodded, and Taylor dashed off.

"Yes, that was my reaction also. Do you know why she wasn't on the plane?"
"Up, yea, yea I do."
"What happened?"
"She and Taylor broke up. They had a huge fight and she went running off. Zac had to go find her."
"Oh my. That's probably why she wanted to call Zac right away instead of Taylor. I had no idea!"

August couldn't take listening to this again. She got up and ran out of the house. She ran down the block, past the Hanson house, and into the park. She found a bench and curled up and cried.

"Well, I had better go. I need to call my parents and tell them to come back from dinner early, and I need to find Zac. He ran out of the room, with Tay following him. I need to find the and calm Zac down. Please tell August that we love her. Even Tay. He's still in love with her and is feeling guiltier that you can imagine."
"I'll be sure to tell her. Thank you Isaac. Oh my. Now I have to find August, she just ran out again."
"Liz, be careful. A lot of people know who August is. A lot of people have seen her with us. Just be careful. She went to the park a lot in Tulsa, check there, ok?"
"Ok, Thanks for the warning Isaac."
"Anytime Liz. Anytime."
"Bye Isaac."
"Bye"
