The Inspiration for Our Name
1 Cor. 12 speaks of spiritual gifts, or spiritual things - spirituals. The Greek word that is translated 'spiritual gifts' is 'pneumatikos,' and was the inspiration for our old band name 'Pneuma.' But as we discovered, the name had already been taken by countless other groups, businesses, projects, etc. It seems more people are intrigued by the Pneuma than we thought. And that is good. Our battles are not won by might or by power, but by God's Spirit. And of spiritual things we ought not to be ignorant. Every day, we fight battles, and battles are being fought over our souls. Our tendancy too often is to fight in the temperal, earthly, and carnal. But God would have us understand that spiritual warfare is going on in the unseen. The battle is deeper than our relationships, finances, and sickness; it is war with eternal stakes. Ever since I really got into studying these things for the first time, they have been a big focus and interest of mine. This chapter appeals to my ambition and desire to take all God has for me. I want to win battles, to tear down strongholds, to save souls, and excel in ministry. But the last verse of 1 Cor 12 is one I believe I've failed to give sufficient attention. 'But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet show I unto you a more excellent way.' The last word in the last verse of 1 Corinthians 13 speaks of what we should put first in our souls. And that is God's love. It is this love we read about where the Word says, God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes on Him shall not perish, but shall have everlasting life. This love is what God speaks of when He says, 'Greater love has no one than this, that a man lay down His life for His friends,' speaking of Jesus, who laid down His life for us when we were most wretched and unlovable. It is the love Jesus spoke of when He shared that the greatest commandment is that you love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. If we feed the poor, possess the faith to move mountains, or have even the courage to give our body to be burned, and have not this love, it profits nothing. We now see through a glass darkly, through eyes of faith and hearts of hope. Today our faith is the evidence of things unseen, and our hope is in heaven which is to come. But the day is coming when our faith and our hope will be done away with as our every hope is fulfilled, and our faith becomes sight. But our love will still remain. And now abideth faith, hope, and love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. 1 Cor. 13:13
