This Girl is Different

“Class, we have a new student. Taylor, could you come here please?” asked the teacher, Mrs. Role. She’s a great teacher. We always get free time and today, we get the whole class.
I snickered behind my hand. “Taylor…probably some geek.” I whispered to my brother, Bob.
“I don’t think so.” Bob said.
What is that supposed to mean, ‘I don’t think so’? I mean, Bob’s my twin, and I have no idea what he’s talking about!
“Check it out!” whispered Dave, my fraternal triplet.
A girl with shoulder length dark brown hair and hazel eyes walked into the classroom. She was wearing a pair of faded jeans and a white tee. On her feet, were a pair of running shoes. Kinda of plain compared to what the other girls in our class, skirts, baby tees, tank tops, clunky heels, and streaked hair. Now, the new girl…well, she’s really…well…different.
“This is Taylor Powers. She’s new here from Alberta. Please make her feel welcome.” Said Mrs. Role. “Taylor, please take a seat in front of Dave.” She said.
Taylor sat in front of Dave. She ignored all the stares.
Dave leaned towards her and tapped her on the shoulder. “Hey.”
Taylor turned around. “Hey Dave.” She said quietly with a small smile. Just then, I heard snickering behind us. I turned around and saw Kathryn, Heather, and her wannabes giggling. I think that they’re total idiots, if you know what I mean. They’re total airheads. Dave, on the other hand, always thinks the best in people. He thinks that there’s actually some beauty under all those makeup goop.
“So, where are you from?” Dave asked.
“Alberta.” Taylor replied.
“Well, I know that already.” Dave said jokingly. “Where in Alberta?” Dave asked.
“Edmonton.”
“They have a huge mall there, don’t they?”
“Yeah.”
“You don’t talk much, don’t ya?” Dave asked, smiling.
“Not to people I don’t know well.”
“Well, that’s not good because Dave won’t shut up!” I cut in. “But I guess you know that already!”
“Excuse me?” Dave tried to look offended. “Do I really talk that much?”
“YES!” Everyone in the class said.
Taylor couldn’t help but laugh.
Then, Heather and Kathryn walked up to Taylor. “Where on earth did you get that outfit? Is Edmonton really that unstylish?” Heather sneered. (I am not insulting my city! This is just a part of my story!)
“Heather, why don’t you just shut up!” said Dave.
Heather looked pleadingly at me.
“Really Heather, what is your problem?” I asked.
“I happen to like the way I dress. I’m not fake, like you!” Taylor said angrily.
Kathryn covered her mouth with her hand.
“Excuse me?” asked Heather.
“Just get the hell out of here, and take Kathryn with you.” Bob said with a wave of his hand.
Kathryn and Heather walked away. Taylor burst out laughing. She’s really cute.
“So Taylor, do you have any brothers or sisters?” Bob asked.
“I have an older sister.”
“What’s her name, Jordan?” Heather called out nastily.
“As a matter of fact, yes!” Taylor yelled.
“You have a sister named Jordan?” asked Dave.
“Yeah. My parents wanted a boy, but they had Jordan, so they gave her a guy’s name.”
“How old is she?” asked Bob.
“JK is a year older than us.” Replied Taylor.
“JK?” I asked.
“Jordan Kenny Powers.” Replied Taylor.
“What’s your nickname?” Asked Bob.
“Taylor Jesse.”
“TJ?” I asked.
“Yeah. What about you guys?”
“We’re brothers. Actually, we’re triplets. Bob and I are identical twins and Dave is the youngest one.” I said.
“Cool, so you’re the oldest?” she asked me.
“No, I’m the oldest triplet. We have an older brother, Scott.”
“Well, I’m sure he’ll meet Jordan.” Said Taylor.
“So, why did you move here?” asked Dave.
“Dad’s got a new job.” Sighed Taylor. “Again.”
“That means you move around a lot?” asked Dave.
“Yeah. I can never stay long enough to have friends.”
“That must suck.” I said before I could stop myself.
“It does.”
“What about your mom? Doesn’t she want to stay?” asked Bob.
“My mom died when I was 5.” Taylor said softly.
“Sorry.” We said.
“Hey what class do you have next?” I asked.
“English.”
“Good. I’ll walk with you. We have the same class.” I said, smiling.
Taylor smiled back.

~*~*~

The bell rang and we all went our own way, except for Taylor and me. We walked to our English class.
The class hushed when we walked into the class. The girls started to stare at us.
I could hear the whispers. “Is she his girlfriend?”
I looked at Taylor. She was blushing.
I cleared my throat. “Um, Mr. Greene, this is Taylor Powers, she’s new here.” I said.
“Welcome Taylor,” Mr. Greene greeted her with a smile, “please take a seat.”
Taylor smiled shyly, and followed me to the back of the room.
“Clint, do you know her?” my friend Net asked. Net is not his real name. His real name is Franklin, Bob’s middle name, but no one calls him that. We call him Net because in basketball, he’s nothing but net. He’s a great shooter…that’s probably why he’s the captain of our school basketball team.
“Yeah, her name is Taylor, and she’s in my Health class. “She’s really nice and isn’t afraid to speak her mind.” I said to him.
“Clint.” I turned around. Taylor was sitting beside me. “Wanna eat lunch together?” she asked with a smile.
“Sure. You can meet Scott.” I said, returning the smile.
Libby, another snobby girl, who sits in front of me suddenly turned around. “Clint,” she whined, “is she your girlfriend?”
Rumor has it that Libby likes me, and she’ll do anything to get me. Well, she tried, but didn’t succeed yet. She placed her hand on my hand. I made a face and pulled away.
I could hear Net and Taylor laughing beside me. Libby made a face and turned around.
“That girl is so annoying!” Net whispered to me. I laughed. Libby turned around again and glared at him.
“Shut up Franklin.” She said to him.
“Get a life Liberty.” Net said to Libby.
Taylor and I just laughed.
“What are you laughing at, you little bitch?” Libby demanded.
Taylor stared at her. “Bitch? Who’s the one drooling at Clint, but never getting the fact that he have no interest in you whatsoever.”
I covered my mouth from laughing. Boy Taylor and her mouth! Net, on the other hand, started to laugh uncontrollably. Libby glared at Taylor one last time before turning around in her seat again.
“Taylor,” I said to her. She looked at me. “I love your mouth!” Taylor laughed.
English class… not exactly my favorite subject, but I rather have English than Social or Math! Right now, we’re doing a novel study. Mr. Greene passed out the books. I looked at the title… ‘To Kill A Mockingbird?’ Hmm… the book is pretty thick…
“Ok, class, who has read this book before?” Mr. Greene asked us.
Read this book? Who in the name of god…
“I’ve read this book before.” Said a voice. Oh my god, that sounded like Taylor!
“Yes Taylor, and when did you read it?” Mr. Greene asked.
“I read it when I was 12.”
I looked at her. “Are you serious?” I cried.
“Yeah.” Taylor looked down on the floor.
“Why did you read the book when you were 12?” asked Mr. Greene. “The book is for tenth graders.”
“Well, I started to read books when I was four.”
“Ok then. This will be easy for you.”
The class continued… I sighed… this book is so boring! I yawned and looked over at Taylor. She was writing something. I leaned over in my desk.
‘Dear…Andy…’
Who’s Andy? Her Boyfriend? I dunno… I leaned towards her desk… suddenly, the chair slipped from under me and I fell to the floor! It made a loud BANG! The whole class turned towards me and started to laugh. I could feel my face turning red. That was so embarrassing! I got up and Net put my desk and chair back upright. Then it happened. I felt a sharp pain in my wrist. Crap! It’s my right hand! How the hell am I supposed to write?!
“M-mister Greene?” I called out weakly.
Taylor immediately turned to me. “What’s wrong?” she asked.
“Yes Clint?” Mr. Greene asked me.
“My wrist hurts, can I go to the nurse?”
“Of course. Take your books with you.”
“Can I go with him?” Taylor asked.
Mr. Greene nodded.
Taylor took my bag and her bag and walked with me out the classroom door. My wrist is throbbing and I could feel tears in my eyes. NO! I can’t cry in front of a girl! I can’t cry!
“Clint, you know, you can cry in front of me.” Taylor said softly.
I sniffled.
We walked to the nurse’s office and Taylor knocked on the door. The nurse, Miss Nancy opened the door and led us in. It turned out that I’ve sprain my wrist! She wrapped my throbbing wrist in an ace bandage, gave me an Advil and sent me back to class! Can you believe that?
Since it was close to the end of class, and lunch was next, Taylor and I walked into the cafeteria. Scott had a spare, so he was sitting with some of his friends at a table. Scott rushed to me when he saw me.
“Clint! What happened?” Scott cried, running over from his seat. His friend Gil followed him.
“I leaned over too far in my desk and fell.” I said, blushing again.
“Well, I’m glad you’re ok.” Scott said. He looked at Taylor, who was carrying my books. “Hey I’m Scott. Clint, you shouldn’t make a girl carry your books!”
“Well, excuse me, Scott! This is Taylor Powers. She’s new here, and she came to help me.” I said.
“Nice to meet you. Do you have a sister named Jordan?” Scott asked. He offered his hand to Taylor, and she shook it. “That is quite a grip!” Scott commented.
“Yeah, I do have a sister named Jordan.” Taylor said.
“I’m Gil.” Gil introduced himself.
“Hi, I’m Taylor.”
“She looks a little like Jordan, doesn’t she?” Gil said, flipping his long hair over his shoulder.
“Yeah, they do.” Scott agreed.
The bell rang. That means, it’s time for lunch. Taylor, Scott and I waited in line to get our lunch special, which are Lasagna and a fruit salad. Yummy!
We sat down at a table and started to eat. The problem is that I’m right handed and I can’t use my right hand!
Dave and Bob came along then with their trays of food.
“Clint! What happened to your wrist?” exclaimed Dave.
Taylor and I quickly explained what happened.
“Hey, there’s Jordan!” said Gil, pointing to a girl with long brown hair and hazel eyes wearing a pair of dark blue jeans and canary yellow tee.
Taylor got up from her seat and ran to Jordan. They talked for a minute and then she and Jordan walked back to our table.
“Hey guys, this is my sister, Jordan.” Taylor said when they reached our table.
“Nice to meet you.” We said in unison.
“Hey.” Jordan said. She turned to Scott. “Scott, right? And Gil?”
“Yeah.” They said.
“I’m Clint, and this is Dave and Bob.”
“What happened to your wrist?” Jordan asked me.
Taylor and I explained once more. Jordan giggled, and we continued to eat again.
I tried to use my left hand to eat, but I couldn’t! I can’t use my left hand! I tried my right hand and… OW!
“Clint, you butthead, you can’t use your injured hand!” Dave said with a laugh.
“Well I can’t eat!” I cried.
“Here.” Taylor picked up my fork and started to feed me, bite by bite. That must’ve looked really odd, because people are starting to stare at us.
Unfortunately, Kathryn, Heather, Libby and their wannabes were sitting at the next table. They were staring at us. I can see that Libby was giving Taylor REALLY nasty looks. Scott and Gil are lucky! They don’t have snobs like Libby, Heather and Kathryn stalking us. Heather likes Dave and Kathryn likes Bob, and then there’s Libby who’s madly in love with me… like I said already, Scott and Gil are really lucky!

“Clint!” I turned to look at them. Libby was talking to me…oh great.
“What do you want?” I asked her.
“Do you like her?” she asked.
I looked at Taylor and smiled. I turned back to Libby and said, “I like her WAY better then you!”
Taylor and Jordan started to laugh.
Libby and them glared at us again.
This is gonna be an interesting day. I can already tell that the snobs and Taylor will NOT get along. Thank god it’s a Friday, and we have Spring Break.

After school, the seven of us met at my locker to go to the ice cream parlor. When I went to my locker, Taylor, Gil, Scott and Jordan were already there.
“I hate those girls, but I love it when they insult me, because I can work on my comebacks!” Taylor said, laughing.
“I see that you’ve had a good day.” I said with a laugh.
“Yes I did!” Taylor grinned.
Dave and Bob ran up to us.
“I want to switch schools, RIGHT NOW!” they cried.
“What’s wrong?” Gil asked.
“HEATHER IS DRIVING ME CRAZY!” Dave cried.
“Poor baby.” Jordan teased.
We walked out of the school and walked down the block to the ice cream parlor.
After an hour of drinking milkshakes and slurping ice cream, we started to walk to our house. Gil lives down the block from our house. Him and Scott had been best friends ever since we started Jr. High.
“Where do you girls live?” I asked Jordan and Taylor.
“101 Randall Street.” Jordan replied.
“That’s right across our house!” I exclaimed.
“Really!” said Taylor.
“You wanna meet our mom?” I asked.
“Sure!” they said.
Scott opened the front door and walked inside. We followed him.
“Mom! We’re home!” Bob yelled.
“Hello boys.” Mom walked down the stairs. “Hello Gil.”
“Hello Mrs. Moffatt.” He said.
“Mom, this is Taylor and Jordan. They’re new here.” Said Scott.
“Welcome girls. Let me guess, your parents wanted boys, but instead, they had girls, so they named you after boys, am I correct?”
“Yup!” the girls laughed.

~*~*~

“Guess what?” Taylor exclaimed when she and Jordan met us in the park. Gil and Scott were playing one on one basketball and the rest of us were on the monkey bars. Jordan immediately joined Scott and Gil.
“What?” Dave asked. “My friends Andy and Mony are coming here! They’re coming today! Dad’s picking them up right now!” Taylor cried.
“You must be excited!” Bob said with a smile.
“I am!” Taylor started to jump up and down happily.
I, myself, was lost in my own thoughts. Andy and Mony… ANDY! He’s the one that Taylor was writing to in English class! I didn’t even notice 2 people walking into the park until…

“ANDY! MONY!” Taylor screamed.
I turned my head and saw 2 girls walking towards us. One of them has curly blond hair and the other one has straight black hair. They’re quite different in looks. The one with black has big brown eyes and a really cute smile. She was wearing a pale purple tank top and a pair of faded blue jeans. On her feet, were a pair of purple sketchers shoes. She was running to Taylor and when she reached her, she threw her arms around her.
The other girl has blue eyes. She was wearing a pair of black jeans and a green tee, and from the looks of it, she’s the quiet one. She smiled shyly and gave Taylor a hug too.
“Guys! Come here and meet Andy and Mony!” Taylor yelled.
We all ran towards them.
“Ok, this is Mony,” Taylor pointed to the black hair girl, “and this is Andy.” She pointed to the girl with blond hair.
“Hey, I’m Dave, nice to meet you.” Dave said, offering them his hand. Mony eagerly shook it and suddenly, she squeezed his hand.
“OWW!” Dave yelled.
“MONY!” said Taylor and Jordan.
Taylor looked at Dave. “Sorry about that. Mony is famous for her amazing strength. She can out wrestle any guy.”
“Sorry about that. I just can’t resist.” Mony said sheepishly.
“It’s ok.” Dave grinned at her.
“Hey.” Bob said to Andy.
“Hi.” Andy said shyly.
“Does Andy stand for anything?” Bob asked.
“Andrea.” Andy replied. “What about you?”
“Robert.” Bob made a face.
“I guess you don’t like that name.” Andy said.
“No, I don’t.”
I sighed. “I’m Clint.” I spoke up.
“Hey!” Andy and Mony said.
“I’m Scott and this is Gil.”
“Nice to meet you.” Said Andy.

~*~*~

For the next few days, Andy and Mony (whose name is really Monica) hanged out with us. The 9 of us were inseparable. One day, we were walking on the bridge. Taylor, suddenly feeling daring, climbed up on the ledge and started to walk on it.
“Tay, don’t do that! It’s dangerous!” I said.
“I’m gonna be fine.” Taylor said. Then suddenly, her foot slipped and she fell right off the bridge!

“TAY!” We screamed.
I leaped off the edge of the bridge and into the water, Gil, Scott and Jordan jumped in after me. I gotta save Taylor. What the hell was she? She’s not on the surface yet! Did she sink? I started to tread water. The water wasn’t all that cold. I looked across the surface of the water and saw Scott, Gil and Jordan looking around too.
“Where is she?” screamed Jordan.
“Call 911!” Yelled Gil.
Bob sprinted to the nearest phone, leaving Dave with the 2 terrified girls.
Scott and I dove to the bottom of the river. I couldn’t find her! I had to find her!
Then I saw a figure at the bottom of the river. It was floating slightly… it’s Taylor! I swam up to her limp body and grabbed her waist. Then I got this dizzy feeling.. Oh my god! I’m running out of oxygen! No Clint! You cannot give up! Keep on going! I kicked my legs harder and harder. When our heads broke through the surface of the water, I took a deep breath. I looked down at Taylor. Her eyes were closed. I checked if she was breathing… OH MY GOD! She’s not breathing! Ok Clint, calm down… give her mouth to mouth!
I placed my mouth on hers and started to blow air into it. Wait a minute…she’s kissing me! What the heck is going on?
That’s when I heard it. It’s cheering. I looked onto the shore and saw Dave, Bob, Scott, Jordan, Gil, Mony and Andy clapping and cheering!
I looked back down at Taylor again. She was smiling at me. Then she tilted her head, and kissed me again.

“Taylor, that was a classic!” said Dave.
“Wait a minute! You guys were all in it?” I cried.
“Yeah. We all know that you and Tay like each other, but we all know that you’re too afraid to do anything about it. We also know that Tay can hold her breath for 3 and a half minutes, and giving her mouth to mouth is the best ice breaker, right?” said Jordan.
I looked at Taylor. She was looking back at me. “Did it work?” she asked.
I leaned over and kissed her. I looked at the rest of the guys and draped my arm around her shoulders. “Guys, this girl is different!”

The End
