Scott was still talking to Melissa when Calvin’s cousins arrived. I took a look at them. One was really tall. Almost as tall as Calvin, who’s almost 6’, with long, long blond hair. Another one is slightly shorter than the blond girl is, and she has shoulder length brown hair with blond streaks. The third girl has dark blond hair, and is the smallest of the three.
“Hey Calvin.” The tallest one said.
“Hey Karin.” Calvin walked over to them and gave them a hug. He led the girls towards us. “Hey guys?”
Scott and Melissa turned around.
“Meet my beautiful cousins: Karin (The tall blond one), Dani (the brunette with blond streaks) and Andie (the smallest one).”
“Nice to meet you.” Melissa said politely.
“Why hello!” Scott said to Dani.
Dani blushed. “Hi.”
“So, how old are you?” Scott asked.
“I’m going to be 16 in 4 months.” Dani replied.
“That’s cool.” Scott said, and led her into Melissa’s house. “Come on, Mel!” he said.
Well, Scott likes her. That’s pretty obvious.
Calvin walked over to Melissa. “You ok?”
Melissa nodded, and walked into the house.
I got up off the grass and followed them.
“So, tell us about yourselves.” Clint said.
“Well, I’m 16 years old.” Began Karin, “and I love to play instruments.”
“Cool.” Bob said. “Do you like drummers?”
“Yeah.” Karin’s eyes shone.
Well there you go. Another forming couple.
Why is this happening to me? I groaned. It’s not like I don’t like Melissa. I definitely do now…
Karin laughed as Bob braided her long hair. I watched them with fascination.
They just met, and look at them…
Scott and Dani were pretty similar too. Scott and Dani were sitting on the floor, and he was hugging her from behind. Dani was carrying Calvie in her lap, and once in a while, Scott would take his hand, and would run his long fingers in Dani’s hair. They looked pretty cozy to me…
I looked at Clint. Him and Andie were talking quietly to each other, as if the rest of us weren’t even in the room. They were sitting in a corner, and looking deep into each other’s eyes, like they could read each other’s minds, instead of listening to the words that is coming from their mouths.
Just then, a giggle interrupted my thoughts. I turned to look at Calvin and Melissa.
She was poking his waist, and he was grabbing her waist and tickling her. Well, look at that. He likes her, and it looks as if she likes him too. I wasn’t surprised though. Look at what I’ve pulled outside not long ago? Of course she’s not gonna talk to me. Besides, who would want me, if there is a tall, all around good-looking guy like Calvin around? Not me.
I remembered, at school, Calvin is a chick magnet. He’s nearly 6 feet tall, with dark hair and deep dark eyes.
His family and Melissa’s families have known each other for years, but since he started at a different elementary school as Melissa and us, we didn’t talk much. Melissa told me that even when they have dinner together, they don’t even talk much, because he’s usually too absorbed in Gameboy to even care about his surroundings.
Until the first day of grade 7, when Melissa and I finally saw Calvin playing basketball outside…
***Flashback***
“Hey! He’s finally outside!” Melissa whispered to me. “He’s so cute.”
“Yeah, let’s talk to him.” I whispered back.
Melissa inched over to Calvin, and when he turned around, she ducked behind a bush, and dragged me down with her.
It must have looked pretty funny, seeing two 11-year-olds, hiding behind a bush. Well, I knew that Melissa has a crush on this guy, so I’m gonna let Mel scope all she wants.
Melissa peeked through the bush.
Just then, a mosquito flew passed Melissa. She screamed.
“Are you two spying on me?”
We looked up, and saw Calvin looking down at us.
Melissa and I nodded sheepishly, as we got up.
“Why?” Calvin raised his eyebrow.
Melissa looked up at him. “Wow, you’re tall. How tall are you anyway?”
“I’m 5’9”” he said.
“Wow. That’s tall.” Melissa only reached his shoulder, and I’m just a little taller than that.
“Why are you spying on me?” Calvin asked again.
“We never see you around.” Melissa said. “We just want to see you more often.”
“Well, you’re seeing me now.”
“Yeah.” Melissa blushed and turned away.
“I’m Dave.”
“Calvin.”
“I’m M--”
“I know who you are.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, just because I play my Gameboy most of the time during dinner, doesn’t mean that I don’t notice cute girls sitting across from me.”
And THAT was coming OUT OF AN ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD!
“Oh!” Melissa cried. She is totally blushing.
“Are you two going out?” Calvin asked us.
“What? No!” We cried.
“We’re friends. BEST friends.” I said firmly.
“Good.” Calvin grinned, and Melissa stared back at him, looking dazed.
***End Flashback***
“Would you like anything to drink?” Melissa asked us.
“Sure.”
“I’ll help.” Cal offered. When he got up, he kicked me—hard.
“Oh, me too.” I slowly got up. Great, now my shin hurts. Screw Calvin. Well, not literally. “Screw you!” I mouthed to him as I walked into the kitchen.
Calvin laughed.
Melissa went to the fridge and got out 9 cans of coke. Calvin took 7 cans in his large hands and hurried out of the kitchen.
Huh?
Melissa and I looked at each other. “What was that about?” she asked.
“I don’t know.” I murmured. I stared at the floor. “Um Melissa,” I looked up at her, “about what happened…”
“We better go.” She interrupted, taking her own coke, and walked away.
“Melissa wait!”
She turned around and looked at me. “What?”
Melissa never answers to “What?” unless she’s pissed.
“We should talk.”
“No we shouldn’t.” she turned around and walked away, back into the room, and sat down beside Calvin, leaning against him as he whispered in her ear.
