Chapter Three

Karin and I reached the park first. There was a small, narrow ravine with a really cute little bridge that sits across it. Trees were planted everywhere, and they were all huge. Many couples were sitting there, under the tree in the shade. It looked really cozy. There were flowers blooming everywhere; tulips, daisies, lilies…
Birds were singing loudly and you could hear the people’s laughter a block away…

My eyes traveled to the playground. It was a pretty cute site, considering the amount of children playing in the sandboxes, the swings and the slides.
“I wanna play!” Melissa, Thomas and Matt cried, and dashed down the hill into the playground.
Several of the kids screamed.
The rest of us laughed.
“Melissa and them are always like that.” Commented Melanie. “During lunch time, Matt and Melissa are always the weird, psycho ones.”
“Do you all go to the same school?” Clint asked.
“Nope. Melissa, Karin, Matt and I go to Scona High, where Thomas and Stephanie go to Ainlay High. It’s weird considering that Scona and Ainlay are total enemy schools, and yet, we’re all good friends.”
“I’m gonna go with them.” Dave said, and ran after Melissa to the swings.

Melanie settled herself onto a patch of grass, under a tree. She does seem like the type to just relax and let the world take its course. Clint quickly sat down beside her, and they began to talk. The two does make a good couple, not that I’m thinking like that. They have similar thoughts and interests that make them both interesting.
Karin and I walked over to them and sat down.
“So tell me about Scona.” I said.
“Yeah, dad says that we might be going there.” Clint added.
“Well, in Scona, it’s unpredictable, especially if you hang around Matt and Melissa. Those two are crazy when they’re together.” Melanie said.
“Well, not really because Jessica and Carver are pretty psycho too…actually, they’re only psycho when they’re around Matt and Melissa…So I guess Matt and Mel are the cause of all the weirdness.” Karin said.
“Who do you usually hang out with?” I asked.
“Well, we have a hallway right outside of the bleachers, and we usually eat lunch there. Our group consists of Me, Melissa, Jessica, Karin, Matt, Carlton, Carver, Tim, William, Alex, Johnny and the occasional Shawn, Craig and Josh.” Said Melanie.
“Wow, so many guys.” Clint commented.
“Well, we can’t help it if we girls are so attractive and beautiful.” Melanie replied.
Clint and I laughed.
Karin giggled.
“You should really see what we do. It’s usually “Pick on Melissa Day” or something, because Matt and Carlton usually picks Melissa up and carry her around and stuff. Sometimes, they drag her, and one time, then nearly threw her down the stairs!” she said.
“Let’s just say that you might go totally insane if you come to Scona.” Said Melanie.
We all looked over at the swings, where Melissa, Matt, Thomas and Dave were playing. Matt and Melissa were hanging upside down on the swing seat.

Scott and Stephanie went off by the ravine. It was flowing between a ton of rocks, and they were standing on a couple of them. It was a really pretty sight. The bridge that’s across it was made out of wood and bricks. On the sidewalk around the ravine, were the drawings of young artists. Kids can do a lot of you just simply hand them a box of sidewalk chalk. Stephanie and Scott’s arms were moving around…as if they’re trying to catch something, their hands cupping the air. Hmm… I think they’re trying to catch the dragonflies…or something that is flying around them. I hope they catch a dragonfly or a butterfly…and not a bee or something. Actually, if they caught a bee, I’d laugh so hard!

Karin and I looked at each other.
“What do you want to do?” I asked her.
“Let’s go walk around.” Karin said.
So, Karin and I walked around the playground, and came upon a dried up skating rink. Karin walked into it and started to “skate” around. It looked pretty funny, because she was “skating” in a big rink of grass and weeds, but she seemed to think that she was on a big rink of smooth ice. I watched her in amazement. She was gracefully spinning and jumping, her arms straight out beside her.
I heard a sound behind me and turned around. Behind me were Melissa and Matt.
“Is she always like that?” I whispered.
“Yeah, she skates a lot, and she does that too sometimes when we’re eating lunch at school.” Melissa replied.
“Some of the time, she just falls on her butt.” Matt added.
Melissa jabbed Matt in the ribs with her elbow. “Shush you, Matt,” she said, “you know she’s good.”
“Yeah, she is.” Matt agreed.
“I guess she loves to skate, eh?” I asked.
“Of course. She’s the skating master. She talks about skating all the time…and she loves to play with her hacky sack.” Said Matt.
“Not to mention playing the violin, the clarinet and the drums.” Melissa added.
“She plays the drums too?” I asked.
“Of course. She always comes into our music class, and sneak to the drum set. Then, our music teacher will come out and ask who was playing the drums, and then Karin will turn red, but then the teacher will compliment her and then she’ll turn even redder. That’s like a tradition.” Melissa said. (No Karin, I’m not dissing you! You’re very talented! Hehe!)
I laughed.
“I remember once, she was so excited about landing a jump, she demonstrated it to me in music class. She found an area that’s kinda cleared up, and started to turn and jumped. And then, something happened that caused her to trip, fall into a chair and crashed into several music stands!” Melissa continued. (Again, Karin, I’m not dissing you, but I found that little situation very funny!).
“MELISSA! MATT!” Dave and Thomas yelled.
“COMING!” Matt hollered back.
Melissa and Matt joined Thomas and Dave back on the swings. Melissa turned back to me intently.
“If you really like her you have to tell her, because even if she likes you, a lot, she won’t do anything about it. She’s that shy.”
I nodded, and turned my attention back to Karin, and her golden blond hair.
“You really love to skate, don’t you?” I asked Karin.
Karin didn’t answer.
Well, that’s good. It was a lame question anyway. I need something that’ll catch her attention.
“Karin?” I asked.
Again, she didn’t answer. Man, she sure is concentrating!
“Karin!” I called. “Hello!”
“Bob, what’s wrong?” A voice asked me.
I turned around and saw Melanie and Clint.
“Karin is concentrating too hard on her skating, and I don’t think she’s even listening to me!”
Melanie went up to Karin and tapped her shoulder. Immediately, Karin stopped “skating” and turned around.
“Hey Melanie, what’s up?” she asked.
I DON’T BELIEVE IT!
“Did you try that?” Melanie asked.
“Uh…no…” I replied, turning red.
Clint burst into laughter.
“Common sense, my friend, common sense.” Melanie said with a smile. She turned to Karin. “Now, please give Bob your undivided attention.”
Karin looked at me. “Yes Bob?” she asked.
“Um…could you teach me how to skate sometime?”
“Sure!” Karin smiled. “Sorry I’ve been ignoring you, it’s just that I…”
“You love to skate, and you zone everything out when you do skate, am I correct?” I smiled. “That’s ok. I’m like that when I’m playing the drums.”
“We’ll leave you two alone.” Melanie said, taking Clint by the hand and dragging him away.

For the next hour or so, all of us just kinda went off on our own in the park. Karin and I talked on the picnic table about our interests and stuff like that, while the others played a really intense game of tag. Childish, I know, but they’re having a lot of fun. After a while, everything just slowed down and we were all lying around on the grass.

“You know, we should really go home.” Said Stephanie. “It’s 7:00pm and we should go and eat.”
“Party pooper.” Thomas said.
Stephanie threw a hand full of grass at him.
Thomas stuck his tongue out at her in return.
“Children! Do I have to separate you two?” Matt said.
“Look who’s talking.” Melissa whispered to me.
I laughed.
“What are you laughing about?” Matt looked at me with a funny grin.
“You!” I replied.
Matt pounced on me! It was a really funny, yet really scary experience, having a built football player jumping on you. Melissa and Melanie found it really amusing, so they started to laugh.
“What are YOU two looking at?” Matt teased, and jumped on Melissa. It’s obvious that those two are really good friends.
“Seriously, we better go.” Scott said, looking at his watch. “Dad is gonna get pissed.”
“Well, we’ll see you guys later, ok?” said Melissa. “Here’s my number. Call me tonight.” She said, handing Dave a slip of paper. She got off the grass. “Bye guys!” she said, and began to walk down the sidewalk to her house.
Dave quickly got up. “Wait Melissa! I’ll walk with you!”
The rest of us got off of the grass and returned home, all with big smiles on our faces.
