"Hey Mike catch!" I said throwing him my hacky sack.. I was rummaging through the contents in my side pocket of my backpack.
I took out a few notes and began to read them.
"Are those from your boyfriend," teased Michael.
"Dream on buddy. I don't have one."
"Do you want one?" he asked.
"I'm not sure. I've never had one before. Besides I'm not sure I'm ready," I confessed.
"When you are, I'm sure you'll get one."
"Like who?" I asked sarcastically.
"That's for me to know and you to find out," he said giving me a mischievous smile and his blue eyes sparkling.
Mike and I had been friends for quite some time. He was short and had brown hair and a goatee. While I on the other hand am tall, and have long blond hair. Him and my good friend Stef were also going out. We were waiting for his mom to pick us up, and bring us home after cross-country running practise at school.
"That's it tell me or I'll break your legs," I threatened jokingly standing up, and throwing fake punches his way.
"If that's how you want it to be. I'll give you a hint. His first name starts with S and ends with a T"
"Jeff?" I asked.
"No dummy, since when does Jeff start with an S?" he laughed.
"Darn, I don't know then."
"How about Scott?"
"Scott?" I almost yelled, "that boy doesn't even acknowledge me when I walk down the halls, let alone talk to me."
"So he's shy."
"Hey I'm shy too, besides how do you know this."
"What do you think us guys do when we have parties?"
"I don't know, play ring and run?" I answered.
"We do that too, but we do talk about girls."
"Ooooo, what do they think about me," I asked starting to really get interested.
"They think you're beautiful, smart, and funny."
"And your lying through your teeth."
"Karin look at me. I'm not lying."
I looked at him and he did look sincere. ‘Darn' I thought to myself. I couldn't handle the thought that a guy actually liked me. Mike's mom came soon and brought me home where I pondered the idea of Scott liking someone, me of all people. I decided to seek advice from my friend Melissa. After all she was going out with Scott's brother Dave.
I picked up the phone and gave her a call. "Hello is Melissa there?"
"Sorry she's not. She's at Dave's," her mom answered.
I debated calling Dave's house. I sound desperate don't I. Curiosity won me over that time. I had to know if Mike was lying or not.
"Hello."
"Hello," a male voice answered.
"This is Karin, is Mel still there."
"Yeah she is. Hold on and I'll get her for you."
"Thanks," I replied. There was silence for a few seconds.
"Hello?"
"Melissa?"
"Yeah,"she answered.
"Melissa , you have to help me out here."
"Sorry Karin, I can't," she said sarcastically.
"Gee thanks! Is it true that Scott likes me?"
"That's why you called," she laughed, "you should have asked him yourself. You just talked to him."
"Mel seriously."
"Okay, okay, but I really have no idea. He might but you know, he's really good at hiding what he feels," there was silence for a few seconds and then she continued, "although today he told me he was thinking of joining the cross-country team. If that means anything."
"That is a clue I suppose."
"I have an idea. Dave and his brothers have a band and they were just going to play for me. They say that they want to play for more than a one person audience. Why don't you come over."
"Wait a second," I could hardly believe my ears, "you never told me Dave has a band! Heck, you never told me that Dave has more than one brother!"
"Well now you know," she said, "I can't believe I haven't told you that. They go to our school. You'll probably recognize them once you see them."
With that I got off the phone. I knew where Dave and Scott lived. Melissa had shown me before. Just a couple of blocks away from my house.
I got ready to go, and within 7 minutes I was out of the house and on my bike.
~*~*~
Once I got there I knocked on the door but no one answered. It could have to do with them being in the basement blasting their music out. How would they hear a small knocking sound. Besides they knew I was coming, so I let myself in, and quietly began tiptoeing down the stairs. I couldn't see anyone yet, but I immediately fell in love with the guys voice who was singing lead at the time, whoever it was. I stopped for a moment to listen. As I neared the bottom of stairs, Melissa's back was facing me so I decided to pull a number on her. I quietly snuck up behind her and covered her eyes. "Guess who."
"AAHHH!! Karin you scared me!" she screamed.
The person who was singing voice grew quiet. He obviously knew he had a new spectator. I looked up to see who it was. And what do ya know, it was Scott. A few seconds later the music died out.
"Scott why d'you do that for," complained the guy next to him playing bass. I recognized him as one of the new bass players in the Junior Band at school.
Scott just shrugged.
"It's okay Scott, you don't have to be shy," I told him, "besides, your voice is really good. I like it, along with your guys's music."
"Thanks," he said turning red.
The rest of the afternoon I considered pretty eventless. I had fun with Mel and danced around to some of their awesome tunes. I found out who Scott's other brothers were. Clint played bass, Bob played drums. Those two are identical twins, and Dave is their fraternal triplet. So with that, I figured, I figured was the first sign that Scott liked me.
