Halloween was nearing and one week before I got an invitation to a party from Mel. Just an evening of handing out candy to the cute kids trick or treating, a movie and games. The problem was you had to dress up. Now me being one who can't think up any ideas for costumes was dumbfounded. I couldn't be a sailor, because I was that last year. (My old dance costume, a last minute costume.) Maybe a figure skater because I figure skate. The problem was I didn't have a skating dress. So I settled for dressing up like Britney Spears. JUST KIDDING!!!! I decided to wear my cheese hat, and be a piece of cheese. Don't ask.

Halloween rolled in. I had no idea what everyone was going to be. It was supposed to be a secret. Luckily Halloween was on a Friday this year. Unfortunately it was snowing. What a long winter it would be. I got to Mel's house at about 6:30. Dave and his brothers were already there so were a few other friends of mine: Katie, Natalie, Jordan, Bryon, and Alita. We were just waiting for Stef and Mike to come. When I got there I got a few smart remarks on my costume.
"A bit cheesy there Karin," teased Katie.
"Hey, at least its better than last year," I defended myself, "you don't look so bad yourself." She was Tinkerbell.
Scott and his brothers were coming my way, "hey it's the Viking Clan!" They were dressed up as Vikings.
"Make way for the head cheese!" shouted Bob, as I walked by.
"You better."
Scott came by, "how's my cheesy partner. I challenge thee to a dual."
"Your on buddy."
He passed me Dave's sword and we began our dual. Enguard! I was doing pretty good until he started to try. Then I lost big time. He used all his fancy little moves. But the rough edge of his plastic sword scraped against my arm, and lets just say it was a deep enough scratch to start to bleed.
"Oh no, I cut the cheese!" said Scott in a concerned teasing mannor, loud enough for other people to hear.
I began to laugh uncontrollably, "Scott, that didn't sound to good."
"I guess that didn't," he said as he helped me up from the ground. "Sorry, I didn't cut the cheese. I just cut Karin," he said clearing up the matter.
"Smooth move boy," said Jordan.
"Just?" was all Natalie could say, "I think she's worth a little more than just!"
Scott feeling a little embarrassed led me to the bathroom, where he cleaned my cut. I guess he felt bad, because he wouldn't let me help him.
"So Scott, what have you and your brothers dressed up like in the past?" I asked curiously.
"I don't really remember. One year though, I think I was 4 and my brothers were 3. We dressed up as the 3 little pigs. I was the wolf."
"Awe, that's so cute," I answered.
"Well I think your arm will be okay now," he said changing the subject.
"Thanks."
We went downstairs and rejoined the rest of the people. Stef and Micheal had arrived. I guess I should say what everyone was dressed up like. Mike and Jordan were "Hans and France" from Saturday Night Live, I think. I never watch the show. They even had a spiel going "I'm France and this is my brother Hans and we are going to pump you up," in a thick German accent. Natalie was dressed up as the periodic table. Where she thought that up I don't know. Melissa was Dave's Viking goddess, Bryon was a football player, Alita was a pencil, and Stef was a Star Wars character and you know what the rest of the people were dressed up like. Soon the kids started coming and we were busy handing out candy for an hour and a half. Then we decided to play a game of truth or dare. I'll skip out the old boring questions and dares people do, because it tends to get repetitive.
Melissa started, "Karin truth or dare."
"Dare," I picked, knowing truth is always who do you like questions.
"Okay, I dare you to act/dance and lip synch to the ‘pants song' by Five Iron Frenzy." (If you haven't heard the song it is hilarious. It's a spoof of all genres of music.)
"Oh, boy," I muttered. I don't exactly like performing in front of many people. I did the dare anyway and by the end of the song everyone was laughing their heads off.
Soon it was Scotts turn.
"Scott, truth or dare?" asked Bryon.
"Truth answered Scott.
"Wuss," I teased.
"How long have you liked Karin for?"
I could feel myself turning red. I couldn't look at Scott for he was probably more embarrassed. There was silence for a while. I guess Scott was trying to calm himself down.
"Well?" asked Mike, "how long?"
"Okay, okay, I'll answer," whined Scott. His voice got quiet and looked down at the ground and mumbled something.
"What Scott? Sorry I couldn't hear you," said Jordan politely.
"Since the beginning of last school year," mumbled Scott very embarrassed, a bit louder.
It was right then that I found the truth out. Mike was not lying.
Now the question was, did I like Scott too. I sat there pondering that while the truth or dare game continued. We were great friends. He was funny, kind, caring, fun to tease or is the correct word flirt with, he was good looking, had a great voice and was a good guitar player, and the list went on. So what is my truth? I was sitting there thinking if it was true that I liked Scott or not, when it was my turn again, "Karin truth or dare," asked Alita.
Since I was thinking about truth and off in la la land, I accidentally said, "truth," instantly regretting it, "no, I mean dare."
"You said truth first, you can't change your mind," Dave unfortunately informed me, while everyone's heads nodded in agreement.
"Darn, I hate truth," I complained.
"So do you like Scott?" asked Alita. You see what I mean, all truths are ‘who do you like.'
I thought about it for a few more seconds, and it finally dawned me. I did like him. I smiled sheepishly and answered, "yeah," quietly.
Scott looked relieved. I mean I would be pretty embarrassed if I admitted I liked a guy, and he was sitting right in front of me, and didn't like me at all.
"So why don't you guys go out?" asked Katie.
We both shrugged.
"Well I think you should," she told us.
We did nothing, so she decided to do something. She walked over to where some of our friends were sitting, and whispered something to them. Then her plan came into action. Scott's brothers went over to Scott, got him to stand up, and some of my friends did the same to me. They pushed me and Scott together. Clint grabbed Scott's hand and Stef grabbed mine, and made us hold hands. I guess since Katie thought Scott wouldn't ever ask me out, so she, miss matchmaker, decided to make her own action. "Scott, repeat after me," she demanded.
"Karin."
"Karin," he repeated playing along.
"Will."
"Will."
"You."
"You."
"Go."
"Go."
"Out."
"Ou.....wait a second, what the heck do you think you're doing?" Scott asked angrily.
"Just repeat after me," she demanded, "out!"
"Out," he answered less enthusiastic, and quieter.
"With."
"With."
"Me."
"Me."
Scott's face turned bright red after and he immediately looked down at the ground.
Katie pretty happy at what she had accomplished turned to me, "Karin..."
"Yeah, yeah, I know repeat after you," I said annoyed.
"Good," she replied, "now say yes."
"Yes," I said, knowing that if I didn't she would be bugging me the rest of the night to say it.
Everyone cheered. Scott and me looked at each other. We were really embarrassed, and there was no place to hide it. So I changed the subject, "how about the movie now?"
"Yeah," answered Scott, "let's watch the movie."
The rest of the people decided to give us a break, so we watched the movie. The movie ended around 11:30 and it was time to go home.
"Karin," Scott came up to me, "since we are going out now, can I walk you home?" Scott asked making quotation marks with his fingers on the going out part.
"Sure," I replied, "we kinda need to talk this over."
We headed out the door. For a while it had stopped snowing, but it had started again. I looked up at the sky to see the flakes falling lightly, without sound. It was really pretty.
"So," said Scott breaking the silence, "you're not mad at Katie for doing that, are you?" he asked.
"I don't know," I replied.
"To tell you the truth, I was going to ask you out sometime in the near future anyways," he confessed.
"Well, if you can call what Katie did official."
We walked on in silence. Scott seemed to be preoccupied about something. All the sudden he stopped, "Karin, can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
He seemed hesitant. "I wanted to ask you this for myself," he said and then reached out and gently grabbed my hand and looked into my eyes. "Karin....will you go out with me?"
I couldn't believe it. He had asked me out, and I was all the sudden tongue tied, but I did manage to squeak out a, "yes."
Scott had a gigantic smile on his face. He put his arm around me, and we began walking again.
When I could finally speak again I told Scott, "I haven't gone out with anyone before."
"I know. Don't worry we'll take it very slow."
With that we walked the rest of the way home in silence, keeping each other company and enjoying the weather. When I got home, I gave him a hug goodbye. I went inside and he went home. I smiled to myself thinking what a great day it had been.
