The Change of Mind
“Hey Steve, who are you taking to the dance?” asked my friend, Tilky.
I looked around the cafeteria. Lots of pretty girls were looking at him.
“I don’t know. There are lots of girls to choose from.” Steve replied. “Who are you asking, Clay?”
“I don’t have to ask.” He replied proudly. “Melissa asked me.”
“Hey, isn’t she my age?” I asked.
“Yeah, she’s 15.” Replied Clay.
“I’m gonna ask Tammy.” spoke up TJ.
“Well, there she is right now.” Tilky said when he spotted Tammy walking into the cafeteria with a group of her friends, including Melissa, Tilky’s girlfriend Samantha and Ryan’s girlfriend Kayla.
“So she is.” Murmured TJ. “Excuse me fellas, and watch a master at work.”
“This I got to see.” Said Ryan, Clay’s brother. Tammy is 16, Tilky’s age, while TJ was only 14 years old. The reason we were surprised that Melissa asked Clay, who was also 14, to the dance, is because in this school, girls don’t give a crap to younger boys…unless they really like them. We watched as TJ walked up to the girls’ table. We watched as TJ popped the question and Tammy burst out with laughter! Poor TJ!
TJ walked back with a disappointed look on his face.
Tilky laughed softly. “Man TJ, that must’ve suck!” He looked up to see Samantha walking towards him. Tilky grinned and gave Samantha a big hug and a kiss.
“Aww!” all of us chorused.
“Don’t ‘Aww’ us Ryan! Here comes Kayla.” Said Samantha.
“Hey Kay!” said Ryan when she walked over here.
“Hey Ryan.” Said Kayla, giving Ryan a kiss. She turned to TJ with a sympathetic smile. “Sorry TJ, but that was a dumb thing to do, asking a 16 year old to the dance.”
“But Melissa asked Clay!” protested TJ. What a little baby.
“Melissa asked Clay because she likes him and wanted to go to the dance with him. She also knows that Clay likes her back, and besides,” she added, “Melissa’s only 4 months older than him, not two years.”
“Clay!” called Melissa.
Clay turned to her and grinned. “Hey Melissa.” He said, smiling. He turned to us. “Excuse me.” he said. Then he got up and walked towards Melissa. I watched as he sat down and laughed along with her and her friends. Melissa was feeding Clay some chocolate pudding and it’s getting all over his face, but they seem to be having lots of fun. I sighed. TJ and I are the only one without dates for the dance. Then this guy Andrew came over.
“Hey Andrew.” We said.
“Hey,” he said to us. “Hey Sam, hey Kayla.”
“Hey Andrew.” The girls replied.
“Where’s Clay?” asked Jake.
I pointed to Melissa’s table.
“Oh.” Andrew. “Clay’s lucky. Melissa’s cute.”
“Well, at least you’re going to the dance with Dana.”
“I only asked Dana because Melissa asked Clay, and because Dana is good friends with Melissa.
“Oh man, sorry.” I replied.
“Look,” began Jake. “Steve, I dare you to ask Willow to the dance, and try to change her. Make her cool.”
I couldn’t believe my ears! “ Excuse me?”
“I dare you.” Said Andrew. “I dare you to ask Willow to the dance and make her popular; for one day. At the dance.”
“What will I get for it?” I asked.
“You’ll get to go with a popular girl, and you’ll get 20 bucks. Deal?”
“Deal.” I shook his hand. How the hell am I gonna make Willow popular? That girl is a total klutz!
“The time is now, Steve.” Said Andrew. He pointed to Willow. She has her head in a book, as usual. She’s wearing this unusual green outfit. God, I had to shiver!
I walked up to her table. “Hey.”
“What? Do you want my math homework?” she asked.
Oh my god.
“Uh, no. I was wondering if you want to go to the dance with me.”
She stared at me. “You’ve got to be kidding.”
“I’m serious.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. So do you wanna go?” I asked.
“Ok!” She smiled at me.
I sat down beside her.
“Why do you want to go with me?” she asked.
“Well, you don’t go to any school dances and stuff, so, I was thinking of turning you into a popular girl.”
“Oh.”
For the rest of the lunch period, I sat with Willow and talked to her. I found out that she likes soft music. She has a CD player, but not a lot of CDs. She listens to some oldies music from her parents’ CDs, but that’s because she doesn’t have any CDs. I’ve gotta change that. I could feel everyone’s eyes on me, but since this was a dare, I’m gonna go through with it.
“Willow, are you ready?” I asked. Melissa took me, Clay and Willow to go clothes shopping for the dance…and clothes shopping for Willow’s new wardrobe.
“I’m not coming out!”
“Come out Willow!”
The changing room door opened. Willow stepped out wearing a short black dress. “How do I look?” she asked timidly.
“Hold on.” I said. I walked up to her and led her to a mirror. I took off her thick glasses and brushed her hair back from her face. “There.”
Melissa came out of the changing room, wearing a short purple velvet dress.
“Wow Melissa! You look nice.” Said Clay.
“Thanks Clay.” She said with a smile. She turned to look at Willow. “Wow, Willow! You look great!”
“Yeah. The dress looks great, but not really on me.”
“What are you saying? It looks great on you! You just need to fix your hair and put some makeup on. After that, you’ll look great!”
Aww man, this is the last time I’m ever going to the mall with a girl ever again! Melissa and Willow dragged Clay and me down the make up isle for 2 hours! 2 damn hours!
“Melissa…” Clay whined softly.
“Yes Clay? Oh sweetie you must be so bored! I’m sorry! Why don’t you and Steve go walk around and we’ll meet at HMV in an hour?” suggested Melissa.
Thank you Melissa.
“Okay. Thanks Mel.” I said.
Melissa leaned over and kissed Clay on the cheek. That is so sweet. You should have seen the grin on Clay’s face.
Clay and I went to the sports shop, and then we went to the music shop early. Clay wanted to get some CDs for himself and Mel, and I wanted to get some CDs for Willow. When we got there, we found out that HMV is having a 75% off sale!
Clay got Melissa a new *N Sync CD, a new Moffatts CD and a new 98 Degrees CD. He got himself an Offspring CD. He loves the song ‘Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)’.
I got Willow an *N Sync CD, a No Authority CD, a 98 Degrees CD and a Boys II Men CD.
“Hey guys!” said Melissa as she and Willow walked inside.
“Hey Mel, these are for you.” Clay said, handing her the CDs.
“Thanks Clay.” Melissa said with a smile.
I handed Willow her CDs. “Here.”
“Thanks Steve.” She said, smiling.
“They have softer music, just how you like them.” I said.
“Thanks. Do you know any other groups with softer music?” she asked me.
“Well… 3 Deep is one? Is it Melissa?”
“Yeah. Also, there’s Backstreet Boys and Joee too.” Melissa replied.
“Ok, then I’ll get them.” Said Willow. I helped her find the CDs. Melissa also got the 3 Deep and Joee CD.
You know what? I’m starting to like Willow. She’s different. She’s special. I don’t just like her, I really like her. THIS IS NOT GOOD.
~*~*~
“When are we going to Melissa’s house?” I asked, putting some cologne on and giving my hair a sweep.
“6:00.” Clay replied, combing his hair. He took the bottle of cologne from me and put some on. “TJ, Ryan and Tilky are meeting us there with their dates.”
“TJ has a date?” I asked.
“No, he said that he’ll dance with all the girls.”
“Well, it’s 5:45. I think we should go and pick them up.” I said, adjusting my shirt. I was wearing a white shirt with a black tee underneath and black jeans.
Clay nodded. He was wearing a black shirt with white jeans.
Ding dong!
The door opened and Melissa’s mom answered the door. “Hello Mrs. Bass.” We said.
“Hello Clay, hello Steve. Melissa and her friend will be down in a minute.”
A few minutes later, Melissa walked down the stairs, wearing the purple velvet dress that she brought Her hair was down in soft waves. Her lips were a soft shade of pink. I looked at Clay. He was gawking at her!
“Hey Mel. You look nice.” I said.
“Thanks Steve. You too. Wait till you see Willow. She looks gorgeous.” She said to me. “Willow! Come down here!” Melissa turned to Clay. “You look great.”
“You look really great.” Said Clay. Melissa smiled.
“I’m coming.” Willow said. I looked up at her. She was wearing the short black dress. Her hair was piled up on top of her head, and her face was carefully applied with make up. She looks gorgeous, just like Melissa!
“Wow.” Was all I could say.
“Hey Steve.” She said shyly.
The four of us walked out the door and walked to the school. The other guys were already there: Tilky and Samantha, Ryan and Kayla, Andrew and Dana, and…TJ, all by himself. Poor little guy.
“Hey Willow, would you like to dance?” TJ asked.
I watched as Willow got onto the dance floor. She doesn’t look like a geek anymore. Ever since her transformation, everyone had been crowding around her as if she was candy in a crowd of ants. I like Willow. I really do.
The dance went on for a while, but you know what? Even though Willow is a... ahem…geek, doesn’t mean that she’s a bad person to talk to. Willow is really pretty. Right now, while she is in my arms, I don’t care what other people think. I need to do what I think is right. I cupped her face in my hands, and kissed her.
