Found this tip on the net, can't seem to remember it, so I'm copying it here.
symmetry shouldn't be to much of a problem if you only model half of it, copy that half with SHIFT-D and then mirror that copy with ALT-M, join the two meshes with ALT-J and then remove the doubles(W- Remove Doubles) or merge the vertices (W- merge)
Figured out the problem with below. Use RMB to select objects rather than 'b' or 'bb'. Also, blender names things 'Curve.001' not 'Curve 001' The dot in there is hard to see with blender's very very small font.

Some questions I've had abuot blender.
- Sometimes I get stuck in object mode and can't get into edit mode,
or I can get into edit mode, but can only edit one object. How do I edit another object?
- If I press the '-' key on the keyboard (not on the number pad)
then everything disappears, and I don't know how to get it back. It's like the "Death" key.
- If I have the camera selected, and press NUM0 to view from the camera, then 'r' twice to rotate to aim the camera, it's ok, but pressing the 'r' once to rotate about an axis perpendicular to the screen, the rotation is very fast, and sometimes when first pressed, the camera seems to have been moved into an alternate universe. If you press ESC while the camera is in the other universe, then the camera is just gone. Weird. Where does it go?
