I was first introduced to the music of SMEGMA when I got in the habit of taping a local Houston radio show called - FUNHOUSE -. Chuck Roast and Austin Caustic took turns playing punk-rock, psycho-ambient, collage, and stomach-churning-noise... and one band kept re-appearing on my tapes... a quaint song with quiet drones and a tire-squealing car crash, a sampled song featuring a baby's giggle played again and again, grinding sounds narrated by cartoon characters, a trio of scratchy toy violin, clanking machines and the LOUDEST creaking door I have ever heard... Chuck and Austin kept mentioning a great song that they couldn't possibly get away with playing on the radio (even at 1 am)... I had to get this record!!! I drove all the way across town and found one copy left in a small punk-noise record shop..."Nattering Nabobs of Negativity" still one of my favorite records of all time.
