Phil’s

Home Page

Updated January 4th, 2006

Hi, my name is Phil, and I live in the beautiful city of Adelaide, Australia.  I’ve set up this page chiefly to promote my Internet radio show, called “Phil’s SOS Show”, at Live365.com, and to include my favourite musical and non-musical links.

Firstly, here’s the information about the radio show.  You’re probably wondering what the “SOS” means.  Well, it stands for “Soul and Other Stuff”!  My musical tastes are very heavily concentrated on soul music from most eras, running from the late 50’s up to the present day, but primarily focused on the classic 1960’s and 1970’s releases from Motown, Stax, Atlantic, Chess, Duke/Peacock, Hi, Jewel/Paula, Philadelphia International, and other labels.  Inevitably, these musics led me into other genres such as blues, country, gospel, jazz, rhythm and blues, and reggae.  However, as I grew up in England in the midst of Beatlemania (and the phenomenon known as the “British Invasion’ to those of you in North America), I have retained my affection for the stars of that era, primarily The Beatles, The Kinks, The Who, The Animals, The Rolling Stones, and Britain’s all-time greatest female singer Dusty Springfield.  You can expect to hear any or all of these artists in my show, snuggled up against the Motown stars, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, etc, as well as classic rock & roll from Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, The Everly Brothers and Roy Orbison.  There’s also room for Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Don Gibson, Marty Robbins, Mahalia Jackson and many, many others.  I like to have fun as well, so each show will include at least one slightly off-the-wall track, whether it be a goofy reggae version of Elvis’ “All Shook Up”, or “Flight Of The Bumble Bee” played on balalaikas (see playlist 03 below).

Playlists will be posted below at fairly regular intervals (at least once a month).  Most tracks will include a link to the relevant CD at a site such as Amazon, or one of the other musical sites shown below.

This Month’s Background Image:

A small collage of John Lennon & Tim Harding CD covers.  Both gentlemen died in December 1980, so to commemorate this anniversary, my broadcast this month includes a short (just under an hour) tribute show featuring their songs performed by themselves and others, and in John Lennon’s case, three of his soul favourites as featured in the recent TV show JOHN LENNON’S JUKEBOX.

I’ll update the image every month, or whenever I update the radio playlist, whichever comes first.
