SMALL BROWN BIKE - "Our Own Wars"

Hmm, okay. So it's not the first 7 inch. So there is no 'no place like you' on there. And that has got to be like one of my total favourite songs ever. So then, expecting that, I was let down. The lesson there is don't come to a record for the first time with any expectations. 'Coz this is really good. It sort of grows on you over a period of a few weeks. So like, 7 or 8 months after I bought it, I find myself starting to sing 'make this a holiday' on the bus and getting stared at. If you have heard the earlier stuff, well this is the next logical step for the band to take. These guys just got a whole lot better at writing stuff that's more musical together, as opposed to bashing out chords and yelling. Which they still do. BUT WITH STYLE BABY.

With those shouted vocals, the comparisons to Hot Water are I guess inevitable. But the music certainly isn't HWM. Small Brown Bike have got a much denser, big guitar sound. The arrangements aren't as fugazi - like and 'sparse' as HWM if that makes sense. And there's some REALLY nice octave stuff on this record, if you're as big a fan of the two finger chord as I am. The word is out on the street and that word is that Small Brown Bike ROCK. The artwork is kinda purdy too. I wish I wasn't so fat so my medium sized 'our own wars' tshirt still fit me.
