JETS TO BRAZIL - "Four Cornered Night" Hmm, what was I saying about coming to records with expectations? Yes, it's Blake Schwarzenbach's new band. It also has ex members of Handsome and Texas is the Reason by the way. AND IT'S NOT JAWBREAKER. Dan was saying 'a lot of people are saying this is Blake's attempt to be John Lennon'. And I can see that. Both Lennon and McCartney's solo stuff makes me want to vomit blood. I fucking hate it. I don't hate this record though. I mean, it doesn't give you the shits. But that said, it's not great either. I probably need to actually listen to it a bit more indepth and maybe I'll get it more really. Because this is one of those 'put on and rock out while you're having breakfast on sunday morning with your girlfriend' sort of records. There are some great moments on here. The usual Blake lyrical magic is here in places. 'You're having the time of my life' is a KILLER pop song. The last song is funny in a kind of cute, nice way. The song ******* [or '7 stars'] creeps me out though. Sorry, but I mean, people that love Jesus so much they have to sing about him. I don't dig that. But eh, I always fast forward that song. It didn't make it onto my 'car tape' version either. But considering the song before it 'mid day anonymous' is about taking pot shots at shoppers from the bell tower with an automatic rifle in the name of Jesus (the glock is cocked/the sheep being to drop), that might just be a Joke I'm not getting. Oh, and bassists, this might be one of the first examples of someone getting a nice recorded tone out of a musicman stingray. So, it's hit and miss really. Somehow, it doesn't grab me by the goolies and kick my arse around the room, but it's still a good collection of songs. Easy listening with some substance and depth to it maybe? That totally doesn't make sense, but it's the best way I can describe this recording. Rachel called it 'punk kids that have grown up and write adult contemporary songs now'. Sheesh, why don't I just get her to write the reviews for me...but the whole 'adult' thing (ooh er) sort of makes sense. My mum likes this record. But she also likes Identity Theft. Adult contemporary rock? Fuck Travis! This is JTB! By the way, J Robins produced this, so is it any surprise who Blueline Medic recorded with? Heh heh heh. 13 songs, Digipak |
